Description
Amsterdam: Gouverneur de Charles D'Autriche qui fut Empereur Cinquième du Nom. H. Wetstein & H. Desbordes, First edition. Contemporary panelled calf , gilt spine. From the library of Eaton Hall with the bookplate of Sir Richard Grosvenor, and signed by him 1707. Twelvemo. . 1684. Joints cracked, terminal blank detached. A good, clean copy. This is a biography of Guillaume de Croy, Seigneur de Chièvres (1458-1521), focusing on his relationship with the young Charles I of Spain (Emperor Charles V, 1500-1558), who was his pupil. Charles, who became the greatest of the Hapsburg Emperors, was only sixteen when he ascended the throne, and he appointed Guillaume as his prime minister. Guillaume served in that capacity until 1521. He offended the Spaniards because of his preference for the Flemish, and because of his avarice.
