Description
[Claremont, California]: Scripps College Press [Professor Kitty Maryatt], 2005. First and Limited Edition. Accordion. Near fine. One of 102 copies, folio size, [40] pp., signed by all contributors. Each semester, the students of the Book Arts and Typography Class at Scripps College arrive and work "toward a common goal of creating a cohesive artists' book." This book came about as a result of "a novel approach: various physical and emotional attributes of a major character were suuggested....[a]s individual stories were written about her, with no pre-conceived sequence, our character's personality became clearer and evolved further..." (n.b., from the Prelude, p. [2]). The "story" is enchanting to read, each page with an utterly imaginative presentation: there are doors that open, pop-ups of various shapes and sizes, ribbons, strings and buttons abound to provide tactile interest, and there is even a volvelle. Issued in an edition of 102 copies, as of this writing we see no other copies online; our search of OCLC locates thirty-four institutional holdings. ___DESCRIPTION: Accordion structure between two stiff cardboard covers, these covered with paper painted with black and shades of dark blue, Centaur and Arrighi types on Mohawk Superfine paper, printed by letterpress with pop-ups and a volvelle, images carved from linoleum, some printed with rainbow rolls, four-colour images printed on an HP Indigo digital printer, more colours added via airbrush and pochoir, scattered throughout are brads, buttons, fabric, gringe, ribbon and thread, the work measures 12 1/2" by 6 1/4" with forty printed pages; signed by Katty Maryatt at the Prelude and each of the contributors at the two-page colophon, this copy no. 88 of the 102. ___CONDITION: Perhaps a shade below fine, the boards mostly clean with a few light, stray marks and a few areas of light wear; the interior fine, clean and without wear, with none of the pages creased (as can happen with accordion books), the exterior ribbon circle creased. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note the following: (i) additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs, please inquire for details; and (ii) any taxes, duty, or tariffs charged by your country will, of necessity, be your responsibility. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Description
1899. Near Fine binding. Large 8vo; in a silk binbing with titiling “Our Baby” embroidered in sil, along with wreaths of silk “Forget-me-nots” and worn silk ribbon; with 8 printed leaves (the last two are sleeves which are torn and empty) with much handwritten information about the infant Albert Ault, born March 27, 1907 in Wyoming Ohio. The handwritten notes give us much of the usual baby information -- weight, doctor. details of his early days (”He was and is up to this date Aug. 15/06 a model boy. No colic or keeping awake at night” and [charmingly] “His greatest friend seems to be his mother at whom he laughs contitnually}.~~Laid in is an envelope on which is noted “Albert Jr.’s first tooth to come ou to make way for the second to last.” March 31, 1912. 6 years old.” The tooth remains in the envelope.~~There is also laid in a slip of paper on which is drawn in outline “Albert’s hand at 10 months”.~~A charming relic from the days long before social media.~~. Near Fine binding.
