Description
Philadelphia: The Franklin Institute, 1931. First edition. cloth. Very Good. FIRST EDITION WITH IMPORTANT PROVENANCE OF THE FIRST REPORT ON VANNEVAR BUSH'S DIFFERENTIAL ANALYZER, THE MOST POWERFUL COMPUTING MACHINE PRIOR TO THE ELECTRONIC DIGITAL COMPUTER. "In 1930, an engineer named Vannevar Bush at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) developed the first modern analog computer. The Differential Analyzer, as he called it, was an analog calculator that could be used to solve certain classes of differential equations... Utilizing a complicated arrangement of gears and cams driven by steel shafts, the Differential Analyzer could obtain practical (albeit approximate) solutions to problems which up to that point had been prohibitively difficult. The Differential Analyzer was a great success; it and various copies located at other laboratories were soon employed in solving diverse engineering and physics problems" (Britannica). The "challenge of linking together multiple integrators was not mastered until 1931, when an MIT engineering professor, Vannevar Bush-remember his name, for he is a key character in this book-was able to build the world's first analog electrical-mechanical computer. He dubbed his machine a Differential Analyzer. It consisted of six wheel-and-disk integrators, not all that different from Lord Kelvin's, that were connected by an array of gears, pulleys, and shafts rotated by electric motors. It helped that Bush was at MIT; there were a lot of people around who could assemble and calibrate complex contraptions. The final machine, which was the size of a small bedroom, could solve equations with as many as eighteen independent variables. Over the next decade, versions of Bush's Differential Analyzer were replicated at the U.S. Army's Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland, the Moore School of Electrical Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania, and Manchester and Cambridge universities in England. They proved particularly useful in churning out artillery firing tables-and in training and inspiring the next generation of computer pioneers" (Isaacson, The Innovators). Provenance: From the library of the publisher, the Franklin Institute; also the OCC ("Origins of Cyberspace") copy, sold at Christie's in 2005.
In: Journal of the Franklin Institute 212 (July-December 1931): 447-88. Octavo, green cloth with "Franklin Institute" blind-stamped on front board. The complete volume 212 (pages 1-816), complete with general title and index. Very light wear to binding; text fine. A milestone in computer history. RARE.

Description
[New Haven: Printed by Yale University Press for] The Limited Editions Club, 1959. No. 254 OF 1,500 COPIES, signed by the illustrator. 235 x 178 mm. (9 1/4 x 7"). x, [2], 407, [2] pp. VERY FINE GILT PICTORIAL DARK BLUE MOROCCO BY BAYNTUN-RIVIERE (signed on rear turn-in), front cover with French fillet border and large center panel with titling at the top and a scene in gilt below showing a ship under full sail, the setting sun in the background, and tropical vegetation (including a tall palm tree) in the left foreground, raised bands (decorated with a gilt chain rule), spine in compartments formed by gilt rules and featuring a gilt anchor, red and green labels, gilt ruled and decorated turn-ins, watered silk endleaves, all edges gilt. In custom-made imitation morocco slipcase. Lithographed illustrations in the text by Lynd Ward (some full-page, some in color). Newmand & Wiche 300. ◆A pristine copy. This is an attractively produced edition of one of the great modern English novels, both in terms of psychological delineation and innovative narrative technique; and our copy is offered in an appropriately nautical binding by the last of the great Victorian trade binderies still in family ownership. Polish-born Joseph Conrad (1857-1924) led a roving life as a sailor aboard French and British ships trading in exotic ports of Asia, South America, and Africa before he began his career as a novelist with "Almayer's Folly" in 1895. He wrote in English, in a style sometimes characterized as "impressionistic," with a phenomenal command of the language, despite not having learned it until he was an adult. Conrad's stories of the sea fascinate the reader not only for their remote settings and adventurous plots, but also for their psychological veracity and investigation of moral issues. For example, the present work, his best-known novel, centers on the guilt and atonement of its central character, Jim, an officer who commits the unforgivable sin of jumping overboard, rather than going down with his apparently sinking vessel. Only it somehow stays afloat, and Jim is left to combat a stalking opprobrium of the highest order. Founded in Bath in 1894, the Bayntun bindery has provided beautiful bindings for bibliophiles for more than a century. In 1937, Bayntun acquired the Riviere bindery, which had been in business since 1829, and began signing its bindings "Bayntun-Riviere," as here..

Recent full brown leather spine in six compartments, gilt; antique marbled paper in a non-pareil design inlaid on the boards; double marbled endpapers. A fine copy. In Latin Blank pages at the end, apparently added later, are an index of authors in a contemporary hand. One leaf seems to be excised. Contains epigrams on 200 Italian writers, poets, scholars, etc. from Dante Alighieri to Giovanni Carga, each with a short biography of the person honored. It is considered a valuable source of information on Italian culture and intellectual life in the 16th century. It is also a work of art in its own right, with its elegant Latin prose and its insightful and often witty portraits of the individuals it celebrates. It was later reprinted in Hamburg in 1730. The book is dedicated to Antonio Ebrard Sansuplicianum, Bishop and Count of Cahors, France. In the dedication, Toscano expresses his admiration for Italian culture and his hope that his book will help to spread knowledge of Italian writers and scholars throughout Europe. .

Description
London, England: Labour Information Office / United States Information Service, 1955. Very good.. 29pp. Folio. Original printed wrappers, stapled. Noticeable toning and spotting to wrappers, minor edge wear. Light toning to first text leaf. A rare collection of offprints of three articles which first appeared in the English publication Labour News from the U.S. in 1955 on the subject of automation in the American car industry, along with a glossary of terms compiled by the United Auto Workers (UAW). Two of the articles were authored by Walter P. Reuther, president of the UAW, and the third was written by D.J. Davis, vice president of the Ford Motor Company. The articles were presented by the authors to a special joint subcommittee of the United States Congress. Reuther reports from the labor perspective, writing that automation is welcomed by labor unions but he also points out the many problems of the practice. He also discusses the impending effects of electronic computers on society, the responsibilities of employers, the productivity of capital, the need for growth in consumer markets, the need for small business aid, and more. Reuther suggests policies such as a more equitable distribution of the tax burden, adequate unemployment compensation, improved social security, a higher minimum wage, and other improvements that will satisfy the labor market in the advent of more automation. Davis's article provides the Ford Motor Company's perspective on the issue, their definition of automation, as well as its economics and effects. The glossary comes from a pamphlet printed by the UAW the same year and provides definitions of a range of terms such as automation, servomechanism, cybernetics, and robot, among others. We locate no other copies of this collection of offprints on automation from 1955, providing early information on the effects of computers, and perhaps foretelling the advent of artificial intelligence, on American industry.

New York: The Dial Press. Near Fine in Very Good+ dj. 1953. First Edition. Hardcover. [nice-looking copy, tight and clean, very light wear to book extremities; jacket shows minor wear at corners]. "This is a basic love story, woven into a tapestry of the glitter, intrigue and violence, of immense courage and over-mastering avarice against a background of 16th Century France and America. Pierre and Marguerite are caught in the age-old struggle of love against the arbitrary powers which band to separate them. They are both orphans, scions of great houses, immured after the custom of 16th Century France, she in a lonely castle and he in the adjacent monastery." She's got quite a dowry, though (great fortune, estates, that sort of thing), so her uncle/custodian offers to marry her off to the highest bidder, "the fifty-five year old humpback, Tournon." Meanwhile, Pierre's got his own problems -- and he's got TWO rotten uncles, a Lord Abbot and an Admiral. .
