Description
1891. First Edition. Framed Etching. Some age discoloration on the mat not extending to the print. A Fine example of this superb and now uncommon image. Fine Drypoint Proof Etching by Thomas Johnson, SIGNED by Johnson in pencil, after a photograph by George Cox of Walt Whitman head and shoulders wearing his wide-brimmed hat, seated, with a flowing beard, turned towards the artist. Matted and framed to an overall size of 15-1/2" x 18" with the actual image size 7-3/8" x 9-7/8" and the visual etching size not covered by the mat 10-1/4" x 12-1/2." Said to have been Whitman's favorite and sometimes called "The Laughing Philosopher," it has become one of the best-known images of Whitman. Description
[n.p.]: [n.p.], 1925. Near fine.. Scarce set of eight cotton handkerchiefs printed with charming and bright illustrations to classic fairy tales by the beloved children's artist. Atwell's characteristic style is on full display in these lovely designs, where her popular original characters, the 'Boo-boos', mingle with instantly recognizable fairy-tale figures. Each handkerchief is decorated with a bold central geometric shape around which Attwell's sweet and stylized figures frolic, blending a modern art deco design aesthetic with a sweet and traditional children's illustration sensibility. Stories depicted include: Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Little Red Riding Hood, The Babes in the Woods, The Changeling Baby, Sleeping Beauty, and Robinson Crusoe. Rare intact. 12.25'' x 13''. Original side-stapled brown wrappers with pictorial paste-on (cw: golliwog among group). Eight leaves, each with 10.5'' x 10.5'' cotton handkerchief mounted. Each handkerchief illustrated in color and printed with Attwell's name and a fairy-tale title. Small paper label ("Cotton / Made in Ireland") affixed to first handkerchief. Faint creasing and a few small tears to covers; minor foxing to paper leaves scattered throughout; handkerchiefs clean and bright: fine.
