Description
New York: New Directions, 1961. Near fine in good only jacket.. Inscribed later edition of Barnes's great Modernist classic, an association copy with Barnes's handwritten postcard to literary critic Hans Mayer, with several letters and translations sent from Mayer to Barnes. In the early 1970s, Mayer wrote extensively to Barnes, assisted in negotiations with Suhrkamp Verlag, her German publisher, and visited her in person at least once. This copy was inscribed to Jack Oldfield, with whom Mayer co-translated for Barnes a review of the German translation of ANTIPHON, as well as Wolfgang Hildesheimer's note on his German translation of NIGHTWOOD (both laid in). Barnes's Christmas-card ("And to your friend") is also presumably intended for Oldfield via Mayer. The included letters contain a detailed critique of the German ANTIPHON translation's failings "to carry across the glowing passion inside your text" but Mayer confesses that his "deep love for your work is much too private an affair of my heart for me to come to any conclusions of objectivity and validity. [...] I send you all my love and my best wishes, and so does my friend Jack." In 1975 Mayer published OUTSIDERS, on women, gay men, and Jews in Western literature, his most influential work and the only one to reach an Anglophone readership; an English translation was published in 1982, the year of Djuna Barnes's death. It remains a landmark study of alienation and transgression. Signed copies of Barnes' best-known work are decidedly uncommon. A remarkable association and a revealing collection of materials. 8'' x 5.25''. Original grey-green cloth with gilt-lettered spine. Blue marbled endpapers. Blue topstain. In original unclipped ($5.00) blue dust jacket. 170 pages. Inscribed by Barnes on half-title page: "For Jack with the best wishes of the author - Djuna Barnes / 1972. / Hans gives you the book proper." Additionally present are: 1) Postcard from Barnes to Hans Mayer laid in: "Christmas Greetings - Djuna Barnes / And to your friend." 2) [6]-page photocopied letter from Mayer to Barnes, dated February 1 '72. 3) [4]-page typescript letter (legal size) from Mayer to Barnes, dated September 6, 1972. 4) 2 typescript letters in German from Reinhilde Binz of Suhrkamp Verlag to Mayer, in original envelopes, along with xerox copies of Mayer's responses. 5) typescript letter to Mayer from Wolfgang Hildesheimer, German translator of NIGHTWOOD. 6) Four xerox copies of various translations by Mayer et al. 7) photograph and obituary of Jack Oldfield. Minor toning and offsetting to preliminary leaves of book. Jacket laminated. Spine and edges sunned. Letters, etc. generally very good or better.

Description
London: Methuen, 1907. First UK edition. Original publisher's cloth binding with gilt to spine and front board. Measuring 185 x 125mm and collating complete including publisher's catalogue to rear: [4], 359, [1, blank], 40. Sunning and staining to spine, with some rippling to rear board; hinges starting but holding well. Early ownership inscription of Halstow Rd. School to front endpaper; contemporary ownership signature of D. Davis to rear endpaper. Foxing to fore-edge of closed textblock and scattered throughout. A scarce feminist novel, OCLC reports 13 copies with U.S. libraries; excepting the present copy, this edition has only appeared once at auction (1978). The Convert, written by American actress, novelist, and suffragist Elizabeth Robins, is a testament to the trans-Atlantic sisterhood of the period's women's rights activists. Based on her "hugely successful play Votes for Women!, which advocated militancy as the only means of achieving female suffrage...many of the scenes are taken directly from actual suffrage meetings, including verbatim quotes from hostile men and rousing speeches by suffragettes who stood up for their principles, at great personal risk" (Godfrey). A correspondent of Christabel and Emmeline Pankhurst, Robins donated a portion of proceeds to their militant WSPU as well as to Millicent Fawcett's more diplomatic NUWSS. Centering its plot on Vida Levering, a society beauty who is converted to activism by working class women around her, the novel uses melodrama in order to critique it. Vida's early weakness in response to the changing world is not altered by the love of a man, but by a no-nonsense and driven sisterhood. And the deep secret of her life -- an early, unmarried pregnancy and abortion -- does not function as the Victorian plot-twist of her undoing; rather, it is the leverage she uses "to gain the political support of her ex-lover, the rising Tory politician Geoffrey Stonor" (Godfrey). The Convert ultimately functions both as a call to suffrage activism as well as to a broader effort "to create new roles for women outside those of wives and sweethearts...Focusing on the taboo issues of abortion and unmarried motherhood," Robins developed a new narrative of the "fallen woman," one that considers "how childlessness is both necessary and problematic for a suffrage heroine" (Liggins).

Description
Paramount. No binding. About Fine. [Los Angeles: Paramount Pictures, 1935]. Vintage original 8 x 11"" (20 x 28 cm.) black-and-white double weight glossy silver nitrate keybook photo. Minor wear at bottom left edge, keybook holes at left edge, about fine. Independent film producer Walter Wanger throws a wrap party at the completion of his Paramount-released musical Every Night at Eight, on the film's nightclub set and likely on the last day of principal photography; it is rare to find photos showing such events. His stars Alice Faye, Frances Langford, George Raft and director Raoul Walsh are joined by (left-to-right): - Henry Fonda (who was placed under contract to Wanger in 1935 after Broadway success, and was just finishing his first film The Farmer Takes a Wife); - Gail Patrick (Paramount contract player who was appearing in Wanger's Smart Girl at the time); - Walter Wanger (producer of the film); - Alice Faye (who was on loan from Fox Pictures to star in Wanger's film. She is still in costume); - Ida Lupino (who was appearing in, and is in costume and makeup for, Wanger's production Smart Girl); - William Wellman (well-known director, writer and producer seemingly between projects); - Alison Skipworth (in costume for The Devil is a Woman); - Frances Langford (making her feature film debut and debuting her signature song ""I'm In the Mood for Love"". Her costume matches that of Alice Faye); - George Raft (lead star of the film and Paramount contract player); - Joan Bennett (who would be married to Wanger between 1940-65 and who was appearing in numerous Paramount films in 1935); - Raoul Walsh (director of the film); - Bert Hanlon (though the verso identifies him as Harry Holman -- the character actor who appeared in over 20 films in 1935 alone including uncredited in this film -- it is incorrect. This is composer, songwriter, actor, author and director Bert Hanlon, who wrote dialogue for this film). The party took place in late-June 1935 at General Service Studio, Hollywood, CA. Ink stamped by the Hollywood Advertising Council, June 26, 1935.

Description
1910. Auer, John (1875-1948) and Paul. A. Lewis (1879-1929). The physiology of the immediate reaction of anaphylaxis in the guinea-pig. Offprint from Journal of Experimental Medicine 12 (1910). 151-175pp. 4 folding plates numbered VI - IX. 265 x 183 mm. (uncut). Original printed wrappers, one or two tiny chips. Very good. Presentation Copy, inscribed by Auer on the front wrapper: "With best regards John J. Auer." From the library of Lafayette B. Mendel (1872-1935), with his stamp on the front wrapper; Yale University School of Medicine library stamp also on front wrapper. First Edition, Offprint Issue. Garrison-Morton.com 2600. "John Auer and Paul Lewis were the first to recognize asphyxiation as the cause of death in anaphylaxis. Before Auer and Lewis's studies, it was believed that anaphylaxis was a reaction of the central nervous system. In pithing the guinea pigs used in their study, Auer and Lewis were able to show that the peripheral nervous system was responsible for the onset of anaphylaxis. They hypothesized that the asphyxiation observed was the result of bronchial spasms. Operating on this idea, they administered atropine to suppress such spasms, and found this treatment to be effective" (Wikipedia article on Auer). Auer received his medical degree from Johns Hopkins in 1902 and served as House Officer at Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1902-3, where he spent time in Osler's ward. This inscribed copy is from the library of American biochemist Lafayette B. Mendel, discoverer of vitamin A. .

Description
St. Louis, 1969. Very good.. [1],105,[8]pp. Printed on rectos only. Folio. Original blue card covers, spiral bound. Minor wear, slightly heavier to covers. Academic work written by Joseph A. Kahl, who was, at the time, an Associate Professor of Sociology at Washington University, specializing in Latin America. Kahl (1923-2010) subsequently moved to Cornell, where he taught until his retirement in 1983. He authored numerous works on the social and class struggles of Latin America. The present work appears to be unpublished, perhaps printed in a small number for distribution among friends and colleagues. A printed note at the top of the first page reads "Private Document: Not to Be Quoted." In his introductory remarks, Kahl states the purpose of his visit: "For over a year I have wanted to go simply because the Cuban experiment is so important in the context of the future of Latin America. ... My curiosity was heightened by memories of a trip I made to the Soviet Union in 1959. I wondered if Cuban communism would be the same or would shoe distinctively Latin traits. My friends in Latin America, who are mostly intellectuals of varying shades of radicalism, speak about Cuba as something profoundly important to them. A few have been to Cuba and returned with glowing accounts; I wanted to see it for myself." The account that follows describes the people, the scenery, the social and cultural atmosphere, the agriculture, and ordinary life in Cuba as seen by an enthusiastic outsider. He describes eating in restaurants, noting, "All restaurant meals are separate from the rationing system and require no coupons. There are essentially three classes of restaurants." The three classes are workplace cafeterias, local neighborhood eateries, and "elegant restaurants which operate by advance reservation. ... Government officials can phone for reservations, but not ordinary citizens." The ordinary folk have to wait in line and hope for the best. There is also some discussion of the local politics and the American blockade, and Kahl travels outside Havana, touring several of the provinces. We locate copies in four institutional collections, at Cornell, University of Illinois, Washington University at St. Louis, and the University of Pittsburgh. An interesting first-hand account of Cuba in the early years of the Castro regime.

Description
folio, 2 ½ pages, of a bi-folium, formerly folded, some light damp-staining, small hole, in last leaf, due to careless opening, affecting a few words of text, else in very good, legible condition. Williams a recent emigrant to Michigan from New York writes concerning land and the land boom in Michigan: "Mr. Erastus Williams, president of the coldwater society, Esperance, Sir, . I must inform you that Mr. Anderson has not succeeded in entering our land as yet. The Kalamazoo office did not open until the 10th inst I got information that it was to open on the 8th Mr. Anderson had been absent to Grand River several weeks and I knew not what the prospect was . The office was to open at 10 o'clock a.m. and at 4 a.m. the people began to collect at the land office and by day light it was judged there were 300 people at the office - they kept collecting at the appointed hour when it was judged there were over 500 people there - at 10 three windows were opened - "and such a getting to the house you never did see" it was kept open one minute and they received a two bushel basket full of applications. Mr. Anderson was fifteen minutes too late in getting to the office - he had been to the woods viewing land and by some means mistook his way which detained him one night longer he arrived at Ionia the day before, mounted his poney and rode him 40 miles over the bad roads without feeding the next morning he rode 30 miles by 10 o'clock but his watch being 20 minutes too slow was what deceived him. Mr Anderson has done all that lay in his power to enter the land I think - But no one can conceive the difficulties there are attending it unless they are present. When they had all got there the Receiver gave out word that he should receive no money but specie and Bills on the Michigan Bank and the Farmers & Mechanicks Bank Detroit & Bills of the New York City and Philadelphia Banks of 20 dollars and upwards - as they had all been informed that they would receive Safety Fund Bills very few were prepared for it And most of them had to submit to a shave of from 5 to 8 per cent. I wish you to inform Mr. Deuel that Mr. Anderson has made a discovery of a tract of land which he thinks in point of utility is equal to that which he was to select for us the timber is nearly the same and the location far superior. It is I believe in Range 13 west Township six north - which you will see by looking at Farmer's Map of Michigan is within from one to five miles of Grand River it is below the rapids where the river is navigable for steamboats and other large craft, it is about 10 miles in a direct line from the rapids which will probably be the greatest place in Michigan and there is a fine village going ahead within 3 or 4 miles of the tract, its name is Granville. The situation of the tract is considered by all that I have heard speak of it to be far superior to anything there is going at present. . What the reason is that it has not been taken before is strange but the drift has been to the interior. The climate is thought by all that have visited those parts to be equally as good as it is here - some think it is less subject to frost, although there were reports to the contrary at the commencement of its settlement. There has been a great many from here to G River after land and all agree in saying that it is the most beautiful part of the territory. the land is all good in that vicinity I am informed. The land office will not open again before the 1st of Jan Anderson will be down in 3 or 4 weeks and I shall probably know about it. It is almost impossible to conceive how fast government lands are selling I think the opening of the navigation in the spring will close the concern in Michigan any decent land will then be worth 5 dollars per acre without doubt."

Twenty-fourmo size, 95 pp. English humourist, essayist, playwright, biographer, publisher, poet and novelist Edward Verrall Lucas' (1868-1938) first book; a collection of tongue-in-cheek verses, with numerous literary references. Much to Lucas' dismay, the publishers inserted a preface without his permission, and he was so upset with the offensive preface that years later he bought and destroyed as many copies as he could, the result being that this slim volume is a bit uncommon. ___DESCRIPTION: Publisher's mustard-yellow cloth stamped in black to the front board and the spine, all edges stained red, text printed within single-rule borders; twenty-fourmo size (5.25" by 4"), pagination: [1-9] 10-95. First edition, with full number line indicating first printing. 9 1/4" X 6 1/4". 254pp. Gentle bumping to tail of spine of unclipped dust jacket. Bound in white paper over boards, with spine backed in green and lettered in silver. Gentle bumping to head and tail of spine. Binding is firm, tight, and sound. Pages are clean, bright, and unread. A highly presentable signed first edition of this nationally bestselling and achingly beautiful story of female friendship, betrayal, and a mysterious disappearance set in the changing landscape of San Francisco. ABOUT WE RUN THE TIDES: New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice Teenage Eulabee and her magnetic best friend, Maria Fabiola, own the streets of Sea Cliff, their foggy oceanside San Francisco neighborhood. They know Sea Cliff's homes and beaches, its hidden corners and eccentric characters--as well as the upscale all-girls' school they attend. One day, walking to school with friends, they witness a horrible act--or do they? Eulabee and Maria Fabiola vehemently disagree on what happened, and their rupture is followed by Maria Fabiola's sudden disappearance--a potential kidnapping that shakes the quiet community and threatens to expose unspoken truths. Suspenseful and poignant, We Run the Tides is Vendela Vida's masterful portrait of an inimitable place on the brink of radical transformation. Pre-tech boom San Francisco finds its mirror in the changing lives of the teenage girls at the center of this story of innocence lost, the pain of too much freedom, and the struggle to find one's authentic self. Told with a gimlet eye and great warmth, We Run the Tides is both a gripping mystery and a tribute to the wonders of youth, in all its beauty and confusion.
