About Fine
Description
Fawcett Publications. No binding. About Fine. [Los Angeles]: Fawcett Publications, 1950. Vintage original 8 x 10" (20 x 25 cm.) black-and-white glossy silver gelatin photo. Ink stamp on verso from Fawcett Publications and credited to photographer Charles Rhodes, ink stamp date of April 1950. About fine. Original attached paper blurb claims that Burt Lancaster is ordering Robert Mitchum to keep his hands off Erroll Flynn, at the Friars' Frolic at the Shrine Auditorium. Flynn was one of the masters of ceremonies for this all-male fundraising event. Mitchum and Lancaster were part of a musical number and were two of six Floradora Girls. The 3rd Annual Friars' Frolic was held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on April 22, 1950, in which Hollywood's big-name male actors starred. Proceeds were for the Motion Picture Relief Fund and various Friars charities. Famous figures like Jack Benny, Burt Lancaster, Robert Mitchum, Red Skelton and Keenan Wynn played girls. Dan Dailey and Mario Lanza did solo acts. George Burns and Broderick Crawford performed together, as well as famous duo Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. Other comedians included Phil Silvers, George Jessel, Harpo Marx, etc. Many other actors, including well-known Ricardo Montalban, Edward G. Robinson, James Stewart, Errol Flynn, Al Jolson and violinist Isaac Stern played in the sketches and specialty acts. A rather flamboyant evening!

Description
Paris:: Chez la Veuve Vallat-la-Chapelle, 1780., 1780. 2 volumes in 1. 8vo. xvi, 230, [10]; [iii-x], 128 pp. Half-title, small title woodcut vignettes for each part. Contemporary full mottled calf, gilt-stamped spine, red leather label; joints cracked, extremities worn, but a very good copy. Third edition. The first paper is a prize-winning essay, from the Academy of Haarlem, on the physical education of children from birth to puberty. The Dissertation sur l'education physique des enfants, was first issued in 1762, with a second edition in 1763. WorldCat shows several issues as well as a German translation in 1776. The main work, here in a printing of 1780, is dedicated to his teacher, Antoine Petit who taught at the Medecine de la Faculte de Paris, and was a member of the Royal Academy of Science, etc. Still states that a large portion of this essay relates to suckling and encouraging mothers to feed their children thus. - Still, pp. 414-5. The second essay, Dissertation sur cette question, according to Still written in 1772, but not issued till 1775 - making this a first edition - is the author's inquiry into the causes of death among children and some proposed remedies for helping to encourage their survival. It was also a prize winning essay. Ballexserd starts with the position that the number one cause of death with children is because of an acquired disability of the parents. He mentions the dangers of persons hired to care for infants [nannies]. Diet is touched on. Improper swaddling of the infant is also given as the third highest cause of death. Fevers are given the fourth rank as a cause of death; with this point the author chooses to mention also that some soup served to children is unhealthy for their teeth. Other ailments are touched on, though at the end of the book, coupled with medication. REFERENCES: Grulee 580 & 581 [pagination differs - seemingly an error in Grulee]; Still, History of Paediatrics, pp. 414-6. [ADDED FULL TITLES: [Bound with the author's]: Dissertation sur cette question: quelles font les causes principales de la mort d'un aussi grand nombre d'enfans, & quels sont les preservatifs les plus efficaces & les plus simples pour leur conserver la vie . . . couronnee par l'Academie Royale des Sciences de Mantoue, en 1772. Description
Chicago, IL: Christian Century Press, Nov-30. General wear.. An informational pamphlet containing two articles, "Modified Prohibition" and "Dry Thoughts on Election Day" first printed in the November 5, 1930 and the November 12, 1930 issues of The Christian Century respectively. The first article argues for a less stringent approach to alcohol than the current prohibition laws allowed since by the 1930s the public opinion was turning against prohibition. "A great, though by no means a new, dilemma faces our country today. The liquor traffic creates trouble when it is legalized. It also creates trouble when it is outlawed." The second article was written on Nov. 4, 1930, the day of the congressional midterm elections, and declared it the day "that will mark the beginning of a new chapter in the story of the warfare against the liquor traffic. Today a decade of complacency on the part of dry public opinion comes to an end." While prohibition wasn't officially repealed until 1933, the 1930 election had a hand in voting in numerous anti-prohibition congressmen and senators. The article is a rallying cry for the 'dry' troops and laid out a basic plan of attack to ensure prohibition remained the law of the land. 22 pgs. Printed wrappers. Staple binding. OCLC 1 (Oct. 2020). Measures 6" x 3 1/2
