Description
Macau: Typ. de J Da Silva, 1874. First (only) Edition.. Original printed publisher's wrappers.. Very good; some modest spotting and scribbling on the front wrapper; one small wear spot on the front wrapper.. 8vo, [4], [5] - 42, [2 - blank] pp. Hematuria is a symptom of a diseased condition; it is blood in the urine. General acute fevers in tropical climates that were accompanied by this symptom (usually the result of an untreated infection by the plasmodium malaria parasite engorging the kidneys and producing a hemorrhage) were relegated to the general category of "intermittant fevers" or "swamp fevers" (here palustres). Prior to 1880, the date when Laveran first announced the discovery of the malaria parasite in Paris (publishing the result in 1881), no cause for the condition was known. Exiled to the wilderness of East Timor, Magalhães undertook a series of case studies (at the military hospital in Dili, the capital of East Timor, from 1869-1873) in an attempt to elucidate the cause(s) of what he identified as an "ailment" and to suggest remedies (it was, in a way, a similar action to that of Anton Chekov, who, two decades later in Siberia, on the island of Sakhalin, would carry out his studies of tuberculosis). Ameliorative at best, his work was careful and indicative of the general ignorance and limits of such a specialized field within tropical medicine of the day - there are citations to Rayer's notable atlas and work on the kidney and to Piorry. Malaria was no secret or rare ailment. Quinine was the generally available palliative - but no cure. One of the rare attempts at serious research in tropical medicine, in situ, prior to WWI. There is but one copy of the pamphlet located (Amsterdam).

Description
New York: The Dial Press, 1968. Very good.. Uncorrected galleys of the first edition of Baldwin's "criminally underrated" (Weekes) novel about the life of a Black actor. TELL ME is the story of Black actor Leo Proudhammer, his brilliant career shadowed by the condescension, alienation, and physical threats visited on him by a white America that will tolerate him only so far as he entertains, and which exacts heavy penalties for his efforts to live as a free man and artist. The book draws heavily on his own experiences with the Actors Studio during the production of BLUES FOR MISTER CHARLIE, and hides none of its author's bitterness and pain. "TELL ME HOW LONG THE TRAIN'S BEEN GONE is a masterpiece by one of the best living writers in America. Which is not to say, naturally, that it will comfort or cheer you much" (Thompson). 10.5'' x 9.75''. Original plastic comb-bound paper wrappers. Irregular galley pagination, [2], 1-173. Ink notation to front wrapper. Toning to wrappers and leaf margins, some soil, shadow of former paperclip to front wrapper and title page. Comb intact.

Description
Boston: William D. Ticknor and Company, 1848. FIRST EDITION. With the 8-page publisher's brochure laid into the front of the book containing excellent reviews. Original green-stamped cloth. A fine, crisp copy with a presentation inscription from the author on the fly-leaf. First edition of an American classic on the earliest use of anaesthesia in obstetrics. Channing was one of the first to use ether anesthesia in maternity cases. The present work was founded on nearly 600 cases in his own practice, and was considered daring to publish at that time. Channing (1786-1876), the first professor of midwifery at Harvard, was one of America's most eminent obstetric teachers. He adopted the use of ether in childbirth after the news of Simpson and Dubois had crossed the Atlantic a year earlier. This work is of vast importance because it contained a critical study and analysis of many cases in his own practice. Therefore, through his influence, the use of ether in childbirth was successfully used in this country.

Dwight (1843-1911) grandson of John Collins Warren, graduated from Harvard Medical School. He worked abroad in the laboratory at Ruedinger of Munich where he learned the technique of examining frozen microscopical sections, which he introduced into the United States on his return. Description
As Commander of the Corps of Engineers, Jonathan Williams planned and supervised the construction of New York Harbor's defenses. In this letter to the commander of Fort Columbus on Governors Island, Williams gives a detailed report on the state of the fortifications and their capacity for additional artillery. JONATHAN WILLIAMS. Autograph Letter Signed, to Richard Whiley, December 1, 1809, New York. 2 pp., 7¾ x 10 in. Excerpts: "In compliance with your verball request I sit down to give you information respecting the Artillery that may be mounted on the different Works in this City & Harbour." "The Platform at Ellis Island has long been ready to receive twenty Pieces of the heaviest metal on Carriages similar to those at Fort Columbus. "The mortar Battery on Bedlows Island is finished in part & might be ready to receive mortars of any Caliber in a short notice, nothing but the removal of Earth & the platform being necessary; but the work itself is not far enough advanced to receive any Guns. "The Castle on the point of Governors Island has eleven french 36s mounted, & Fifteen more have long been expected to arrive from the Columbian Foundery. These 26 may be ready for action as soon as they can be mounted. Although it would be prudent to avoid putting Guns on the second tier until the arches are dry yet upon an emergency 16 thirty two pounders might be placed there immediately. The Force of this Castle when completed may be considered at least 52 heavy Guns under a Bombproof cover, & 48 on the terrasse above making 100 Guns. if it were necessary 26 more might be put in the 3d tier of embrazures intended to serve as Windows to the Barracks under the arches. "Fort Columbus is a finished work, and capable of receiving without delay one hundred and four guns of the heaviest metal, although, about one third of the number, commanding the read of the Island need not be of greater caliber than eighteen or twenty four pounders. "When Bedlows Island shall be finished & the Battery off the City Battery shall be completed, the first will mount about forty & the last thirty Guns. From this View you will see that the ordnance of this Harbour may be actually taken to be one hundred and sixty six Guns, so far as the Fortifications are ready. And the ordnance that may be mounted when finished, will be three hundred and four Guns and ten mortars without taking into acct the State Works at the narrows which are now ready to receive upward of eighty Guns." Jonathan Williams (1750-1815), born in Boston, was the grandnephew of Benjamin Franklin. He attended Harvard College and spent most of the time from 1770 to 1785 in England and France, where he inspected shipments of ammunition and supplies. In February 1801, President John Adams appointed Williams as a major in the Corps of Artillerists and Engineers. President Thomas Jefferson made Williams the Army's Inspector of Fortifications, and in December 1801 appointed him the first Superintendent of the United States Military Academy at West Point. In 1802, Jefferson appointed Williams to concurrent command of the new Army Corps of Engineers. In 1803, he left his position at West Point but was reappointed in 1805. From 1807 to 1811, he designed and oversaw construction of Castle Williams (the East Battery) and Castle Clinton (the West Battery) in New York Harbor. When Secretary of War William Eustis refused to give him command of Castle Williams, he resigned in July 1812. Right before the start of what became known as the War of 1812, New York state placed him in charge of construction of additional fortifications for New York City. He later moved to Philadelphia and helped build fortifications around that city. In 1814, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives but died before Congress assembled. In 1802, investor Richard Woodhull named his acre tract in north Brooklyn Williamsburg after Williams who had surveyed the land. A member of the American Philosophical Society, Williams also founded the U.S. Military Philosophical Society, and gave it its motto, "Science in War is the Guarantee of Peace." Richard Whiley (1767-1847) was born in London and came to the United States in the 1780s. He served under General Anthony Wayne in the Northwest Indian War (1785-1795) and received a commission as a lieutenant of artillery in 1796. By 1803, he was a captain of artillery, and he commanded Fort Jay on Governors Island in New York Harbor from 1804 to 1806, when it was demolished. He was the commander of Fort Columbus on Governors Island from 1807 to 1809. He resigned from the military in June 1811 and lived for several years on the Hudson River near Poughkeepsie. He served as president of the North River Insurance Company for many years.

xvi, 364 pp.; 2 p.l., 397 pp. Two vols. 8vo (220 x 140 mm.), 19th-century polished calf (joints a trifle rubbed), spines gilt, red & green morocco lettering-pieces on spines. London: R. Ackermann, 1824. First edition of an essential firsthand history of the mass British acquisitions of Old Masters in the first decades of the 19th century. “William Buchanan (1777-1864), a Scottish lawyer turned art dealer, was to benefit most from the turmoil caused by the Napoleonic Wars, although he started too late to participate in the Orléans sales. He employed mainly James Irvine of Drum, Aberdeenshire, in Italy and George Augustus Wallis in Spain and Portugal as agents to scour the cities for available works of art and ship them back to London…”–J. Stourton and C. Sebag-Montefiore, The British as Art Collectors, p. 159. Buchanan structures this work around the celebrated collections to which he added or from which he extracted magnificent works. He describes the collections of Michael Bryan, de Calonne, Fagel, Robit, Vitturi, Lebrun, Sebastiani, Lucien Bonaparte, and Talletrand. He cites prices and provides numerous insights into the dispersal of many of the early great 19th-century art collections. The sections beginning “Mr. Buchanan’s Importations…” (Vol. II, pp. 95-180; 203-50; 294-304; 349-77), are perhaps of the greatest interest, due to the author’s candor and to the excerpts of private (and revealing) correspondence between Buchanan and his foreign agents regarding the pursuit of great works. Nice set, internally fine. Presentation inscription on front fly-leaf: “James McDouall from his sincere friend Charles F. Rushout, on his leaving Eton, Election 1857.” Engraved armorial bookplate of “Jacobi McDouall de Logon” on front paste-down. ❧ Oxford Art online (Buchanan). “His book is by far the frankest ever written by any dealer anywhere, and by printing many of the original documents and letters that passed between him and his agents Buchanan conveys much of the profitable excitement of the pursuit — bliss indeed was it to be a collector in that dawn, but to be a dealer was very heaven.”–Francis Haskell, Rediscoveries in Art: Some Aspects of Taste, Fashion & Collecting in England & France (1976), p. 27.

[N.p., possibly Fresno, 1905. Very good.. Broadside, 13 x 5 inches. A few small nicks to edges, minor even toning, old horizontal folds. Lecture location stamp added in bottom margin, reading "Southport Monday Eve. Aug 28th K.P. Hall." An apparently unrecorded broadside advertising a magic lantern presentation aimed at promoting land in Fresno and King counties "for sale in ten acre tracts or larger at from $25 to $35 per acre, including perpetual water right. Yearly water rental 62 1/2 cents per acre -- the cheapest water in California. If you are thinking of moving you should not miss this lecture. If you are satisfied to stay where you are come anyhow and see the pictures and learn something about California." The Golden State was the site of not one but two Rancho Laguna de Tache land grants. One was granted by the Mexican governor Pio Pico in 1846 to Manuel Castro and included land along the north bank of Kings River for over twenty miles. The other Rancho Laguna de Tache was claimed to have been given to Joseph Yves Limantour by the Mexican governor Manuel Micheltorena in 1843. The latter grant, which was along the south bank of Kings River, was not honored by the Land Commission after the cession of California to the United States. The broadside then most likely relates to the sale of Castro's 48,000-plus acre Rancho Laguna de Tache tract north of the Kings River. Castro sold his land grant to Jeremiah Clark in 1866. Clark's wife, Charlotte had her husband declared mentally incompetent and eventually was allowed to sell the land to Charles A. Laton and Llewellyn A. Nares (the namesakes of the present-day towns of Laton and Lanare). The location of the lecture was a Knights of Pythias Hall in Southport, though the exact location of Southport is unclear. From the text of the broadside, it is not out of the realm of possibility that the developers of the Laguna de Tache Grant tract were marketing their efforts outside California. We could locate no other copies of this informative broadside. However, a map at the California Historical Society of the Laguna de Tache Grant showing a portion subdivided into lots surveyed and platted by order of Nares and Saunders, managers, that was drawn in 1904 by H.L. Ward of Laton, California, helps place the present broadside in its proper context. The involvement of Nares in subdividing the Laguna de Tache tract in 1904 jibes with our proposed date for the broadside, as August 28 was a Monday in 1905.

Description
Galveston, Tx, 1869. Very good.. [2]pp., on a single folded folio sheet of lined paper, with integral blank plus fourteen partially-printed receipts completed in manuscript. Minor dust-soiling, creasing, and edge wear. A post-Civil War manuscript agreement from Texas, with the signatures of twenty-six investors, transferring their stock in the Brazos Iron Bridge Company to John Sealy of the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway Company. Additionally the document is noted and signed on the verso by Sealy, transferring those same shares to Thomas W. Peirce. The document is accompanied by fourteen receipts for installment payments on capital stock purchased in the Brazos Iron Bridge Company, some of which relates directly to the larger transfer agreement. The Brazos Iron Bridge Company was organized in 1867. Its mission was to construct a railway bridge across the Brazos River. The bridge, completed in July 1869, was purchased by the Buffalo Bayou, Brazos and Colorado Railway, later known as the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway Company. When the dust settled on the various transactions among the shareholders, John Sealy owned a one-eighth interest in the railway company. Sealy moved from Pennsylvania to Galveston in 1846 and became an important early Galveston merchant, real estate investor, and railroad magnate.

[Milwaukee, Wi, 1985. Very good.. 45 rpm record in printed sleeve. Minor edge wear. A rare music single, with instrumental B-side, issued by the Miller Brewing Company in celebration of Black History Month in 1985. The front side prints the title and first verse of the lyrics of the song; the verso explains the motivation behind the record's release: "'Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing' was written by the noted Black poet and civil rights leader, James Weldon Johnson and was set to music by his brother, Jay R. Johnson, actor-musician. Originally intended for use in a program given by a group of Jacksonville, Florida schoolchildren to celebrate Lincoln's birthday, its words convey a sense of birthright and heritage. Often referred to as the 'Black National Anthem,' it is sung at various public gatherings." The artists who recorded the present version of the song are a veritable Hall of Fame of soul and rhythm-and-blues music in the latter 20th century: Al Green, Deniece Williams, Patti Austin, Roberta Flack, Melba Moore, and Deborah McDuffie, who also produced the song at the Mingo-Jones advertising agency.
