Description
London: R. Ackermann, 1798. ROWLANDSON, Thomas. . Loyal Volunteers of London & Environs, Infantry & Calvalry, in their Respective . Uniforms. Representing the whole of the Manual, Platoon, & Funeral Exercise, in 87 Plates. Designed & etched by T. Rowlandson, and dedicated by permission to His Royal Highness the Duke of Glocester. London: R. Ackermann, 1798. Full Description: ROWLANDSON, T[homas]. Loyal Volunteers of London & Environs, Infantry & Calvalry, in their Respective Uniforms. Representing the whole of the Manual, Platoon, & Funeral Exercise, in 87 Plates. Designed & etched by T. Rowlandson, and dedicated by permission to His Royal Highness the Duke of Glocester. [London: R. Ackermann, 1798-1799]. First edition, early issue (with most of the plates heightened in gold and a few additionally in silver). Folio (13 3/4 x 10 3/4 inches; 350 x 270 mm.). viii, [4, subscriber's list], [88] pp. Complete with eighty-eight numbered figures on eighty-six plates and the hand-colored engraved title showing cherubs, masks and a coat of arms. So complete with all eighty-seven hand-colored aquatint plates. Descriptive text for each plate. Some of the pages watermarked 1794. Beautifully bound by Bedford in full bright green morocco. Boards ruled in gilt with floral corner devices. Spine richly stamped and lettered in gilt in compartments. Gilt board edges and dentelles. Maroon coated endpapers. Top edge gilt, others uncut. Spine is faded to a golden brown. One plate (#49) with some mild toning around border, not affecting illustration. Plate 60 with a tiny closed tear repaired at bottom margin, not affecting image. A wonderful copy of this sumptuous color-plate book, exceptionally clean.. An excellent copy of this remarkable military record which even in 1923 was described as 'scarce and difficult to obtain'. Commissioned by Ackermann, who could see that with the increasing encouragement being given to the Volunteer Movement within the military there was a potential market (particularly those who were bank-rolling these units), for a very deluxe 'drill manual'. The plates not only provide an invaluable historical record of the uniforms but they also show in great detail the nature of the drills of the time. Abbey, Life, 379. Tooley 416. Colas 2586. HBS 69194. $6,000.

Paris: Didot le Jeune, 1768. Ravaton, Hugues. Chirurgie d'armee, ou traite des plaies d'armes a feu, et d'armes blanches. 8vo. viii, 681 [i.e., 685] [1]pp. 7 engraved plates. Paris: P. Fr. Didot le jeune, 1768. 197 x 123 mm. Mottled sheep c. 1768, a little rubbed, skillfully rebacked and recornered. Light foxing and browning, former owner's name on title crossed out. Booklabel (or bookseller's label?) of Gabriel Mullet on title. First Edition. Garrison-Morton 2154: "One of the most important works on military surgery during the 18th century." Ravaton wrote intelligently about the treatment of gunshot wounds, and was the first to adopt the double-flap method in amputation; he also introduced the method of suspending fractures in a hanging position by means of a tin boot hung from a wire and attached to a frame (this device is illustrated in plate IV). OCLC states that the author's Traite des plaies d'armes a feu (1750) represents an earlier version of the Chirurgie d'armee, a statement borne out by Ravaton's preface to the latter; however, the Chirurgie d'armee is over 200 pages longer and substantially revised, making it in essence a new work. Hirsch treats the two titles as separate entities, and our other surgical references discuss only the Chirurgie d'armÈe. Wangensteen & Wangensteen, pp. 30, 32, 35. Rutkow, Surgery: An Illustrated History, p. 250. Not in Peltier or Le Vay. .

Description
Darmstadt: C. F. Winter'schen Buchdruckerei, 1900. First edition. Softcover. g+. Quarto. 25 (1)pp. Re-cased with new endpapers, retaining original gilt-illustrated gray original wraps. Black publisher's device and lettering on cover framed by gilt Jugenstil flowers. Illustrated title page and decorative dedication page. Text pages with delicate Jugendstil frames, printed in pale blue, heightened crimson initial and linear paragraph breaks, text in brown. Dedicated to the Künstler-Kolonie Mathildenhöhe near Darmstadt. Behrens was a member of the Kolonie. "They fret, those false prophets, for their wisdom is proven wrong: there will be no new style in art, it has to evolve from the old, one can't invent it. As for the last point they were correct. Now there are signs, that it will come, not emerged from the old, but that it is here already, at least a beginning. One has to have open eyes, be good hearted, believe in beauty. Only then one will realize that something is emerging, that corresponds deeper to our life than those bizarre sought after forms which appear "modern" externally but are flimsy goods of people, mostly, who will turn the New quickly into a money machine..." Scathing Behrens critique of contemporary conditions and theater, favoring amphitheatrical configurations. Jugendstil manifesto and critique of the naturalist theater of the 19th century. 'The actor's task is to give more than just an exact rendition of nature... become the creator of culture on stage, become an artist who is his own material... creates that which is more than nature, is noble.' Building on Wagner's idea of the Gesamtkunstwerk (Total work of art) Behrens suggests for the theater (the Highest Cultural Symbol) to integrate all arts under a single roof. Behrens wrote the essay in June of 1900 and it was printed and typographically designed at the C.F. Winter'schen Printing Shop in Darmstadt. Aynsley, Graphic Design in Germany, page 61: "(Behrens) gave equal consideration to typographic composition, letter initials and illustrations, as well as paper quality and binding." Text in German. Light wear along edges of wraps and chipping along spine of re-cased wraps with small indentation on front cover at upper edge of gilt flowers on left half of cover. Light age-toning of block.

Description
[Los Angeles]: Holloway School of Philosophy and Religion, 1955. First Edition. Near Fine. First editions of the pioneering wellness guru's self-help guides. 28, 24, 16 pp. Bound in publisher's stapled multi-color wraps printed on rectos only. Near Fine with former owner's name is written on the top edge of two of the publications, light soiling and stray pen mark to front cover of Super Brain Breathing. Paul C. Bragg (1895-1976) was an early advocate for health and wellness, having opened what is considered one of America's first health food stores in 1912. His following grew after opening up his wellness institute "Health Center of Los Angles" and, in 1928, "Bragg Health Center" that would eventually grow into the major brand known for products like Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar. A self-proclaimed "Death Fighter," Bragg advocated deep breathing, fasting, organic foods, drinking distilled water, juicing, and exercise as avenues to prolong the human lifespan. He also advocated New Age-style mental healing. He traveled the country lecturing on nutrition, sold expensive supplements, and authored numerous health books. While his work popularized natural health concepts, it also led to controversy, particularly with his patented supplement "Glantex" that claimed to erase twenty years of aging with regular use. At $5 a bottle in 1930 (about $100 in today's money), it was met with regulators such as the United States Postal Service and The American Medical Association, alleging fraudulent health claims. Deemed a food faddist and promoter of medical quackery, Bragg's following dwindled until his 1972 instantly successful book was published, Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar System co-authored with his adopted daughter Patrica. Patricia continued his legacy as the head of Bragg Live Food Products until she sold the company in 2013 to pop star Katy Perry and actor Orlando Bloom. Bragg's products continue to resonate with consumers with most of us having one or two of his products in our very own pantries. OCLC does not locate any copies of either publication.

New York: A Crossroad Book, The Seabury Press, (1979). First U.S. Edition. Octavo, red cloth (hardcover), gilt letters and decoration to upper cover, xiv, 206 pp. Fine, in a Near Fine dust jacket with slight tanning to edges. From dust jacket: This is the first full-length book to be published in English by the new Pope of the Roman Catholic Church. It is a book of rare spirituality by an extraordinary human being. Based on a series of spiritual exercises presented to Pope Paul VI, the papal household, and the cardinals and bishops of the Roman Curia, Sign of Contradiction is as clear as the spoken word and as profound as the truths to which those words point. It is a penetrating look at the mysteries of faith through the eyes and heart of a man who is not only deeply acquainted with contemporary philosophy but who is also intimately identified with the struggles of his people for human freedom and religious liberty. The theme is the human encounter with God in a world that seems to contradict the reality of divine power and love. Written in a language that is at once straightforward and poetic, the book will appeal to a wide audience because of its biblical spirituality, its rich humanism, and its informed use of references to writers and philosophers from Shakespeare to Saint-Exupery.
