Description
1883. AUDSELY, George Ashdown. The Art of Chromolithography popularly explained. [6], 24 pp. With 44 full-page chromolithographs. Folio, 418 x 290 mm, bound in original green cloth, embossed and gilt. London: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, & Rivington, 1883. First Edition of this extraordinary monograph on Chromolithography which depicts, in a series of 44 plates, separate impressions of all the lithograph stones employed, and all progressive printings of the same image in combination-from the first colour to the finished picture. "The Audsleys were Liverpool architects who followed [Owen] Jones in developing a taste for the internal polychromatic decoration of public and private buildings, and turned their decorative instincts to account in connection with the production of finely illustrated books... The Art of Chromolithography was described as a 'popular' account of the art of printing pictures by the chromolithographic process, though one can scarcely imagine such an expensive work becoming popular in the ordinary sense of the term" (Burch). The half title and title pages have been remargined, some minor chipping to the edges of a few other pages. Binding slightly rubbed, but nevertheless a very good, complete copy. Inscribed to lithographer Edwin Fulwider on the front flyleaf. Ruari McLean, Victorian Book Design p. 134. Burch, Colour Printing and Colour Printers pp. 209-210.

Description
[China c.1897.]Half leather over brocade silk, most of spine gone, else very good, 69 b.w. photos, most are 14.5 x 9 cm., some panoramas 8.5 x 30 cm., one large photo 27 x 21.5 cm., all edge gilt, clean & solid copy. * Q U I T E R A R E * . *** **** *** . . AN ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHIC ALBUM OF AMERICAN MERCHANTS . . . IN CHINA, [1897] . * A very unusual album of photographs showing the tour of what appears to be American Business community members & their wives. Arrival in Kwantung [Guangdong i.e. Canton], tour of the Ming tombs, a panoramic ! With visits to some of the famous sights in China. . * Photos of early Canton area, sea coast, the Great Wall, a trip up the Yangtze River, city streets, river/canal scenes, elegant banquets with High Chinese military & political figures. . Of outstanding nature is the last & largest photograph depicts a grand photograph showing all of the members of the group of American & Kwantung Chinese Merchant Advisory Board. A stunning and classic commemorative photograph. . * Also excellent images of an early and primitive Macao, lovely panoramas of that old Portuguese city, the hills around city, river & bay with the city rising up the gentle slope, with a good number of old Chinese junks anchored in the harbor. Again, there are not captions, we believe this group of photos can be Macao, we are not 100% sure. . * The Chinese title above the grand panorama reads: "Guang Dong Zhi Xin Ju Haun Yin Mei Guo Sang Hui Ji Nian:" "IN COMMEMORATION OF THE WELCOMING OF THE AMERICAN MERCHANT ASSOCIATION BY THE CANTON ADVISORY BOARD." . * Consists of about 22 pages of tipped in clear, bright & good focus original photographs. The most fascinating of them is the last group memorial photo of the Canton Advisory Board & all of the Americans & their wives, as posed for the camera. In the front row are what one may assume are the most prominent and important members. . * Central to one American who has a striking resemblance to the Roosevelt [yes the Famous Roosevelt's !!!] family, is a very gaunt & small Chinese holding a long stick, with a flag, wearing a traditional long Chinese robe. One other Chinese is seated in the front row, and he is a be speckled solid man with an alert bearing. Other members are standing behind in ordered rows, with an occasional American naval officer peering from the left and a few small bewildered Chinese boys peeking in from the far right side. . Many of the members hold some sort of a commemorative flag, with the Advisory Board name embroidered upon it. Probably used as a 'guide-on' while touring so the foreigners would not get lost. . * The whole group is standing before a most handsome and great Chinese architectural building with elaborate windows. . The album is without any text or captions whatsoever. Based on the title found on the last photograph, one can deduce the activities of the visitors and their guides. . Of particular interest is a nice photo of a Chinese altar. This has an embroidered cloth over it, with Chinese [Hanzi] characters reading: "Guan Xi Er Si San Nian Men [?] Ji dan: "Twenty-third year of Guangxi i.e. 1897, Birthday to indicate an auspicious day for a religious festive day, thus the Chinese brought the Americans to the temple to celebrate the happy occasion. . * Other photographs clearly represent a graphic record of the arrival to Canton, the places the American merchants were guided to by the Advisory Board members. . Archaeological monuments, old shrines, the Great Wall [indicating a trip to the North near Beijing], temples, Ming tombs, with a host of wonderful street scenes, probably Macau & Hong Kong views, photos of the local Chinese and the jaunty Americans in straw hats, canes, spats, while the American women wore great hats, long skirts and long-sleeved white blouses as the posed for the camera. They were often conveyed in mule-drawn carts with a Chinese groom leading them. . * Other travel was by ship up and down the canals of Canton, photos of the Government buildings, altars, roof tops [from their hotel room ??] showing the city, the bay with ships, a trip up the Yangtze River [?] or some other great river in a motor boat, showing their Occidental crew beside a very well set table. . A poignant view of slow-paced China of a the past century. . *** RARITY: Albums of this subject & period, are always SCARCE. Contains original period photographs and views of China, Beijing, adjacent areas, Macao, and Hong Kong. A lovely record taken by a member of the American group.. . *** The photographs are without captions. There are a few penciled words indicating what the scenery is, however, these appears not to be contemporary with the photos. It is our approximation, guess to the location and scenery in the album. Some well-known sights we can easily identified, others are an 'educated guess' and we are therefore uncertain as to the exact location. "Caveat Emptor" applies, we do not guarantee locations cited above. . *** Color photos are posted to our website. . *** CONDITION: Japanese Meiji period typical album binding. The album is bound in the original half-calf, with gold-stamped decorations, over Japanese brocade calico silk cloth, the leather spine is not present. All page edges are guilt, with the typical Japanese gilt-flecked end papers. . There is usual corner wear, and a few wear spots on both the front and rear covers, with a bit of the board showing through. There is typical minor scuff, wear to the covers. By and large this is much better than the usual period bindings. The album edges are beveled with rounded corners as issued. . The photographs appear to be gently and partially laid down most likely using some kind of 'rice glue' paste, on gray boards. The last 3 pages are blank, but show evidence of photo corners being present, no photos here. . ***.

Description
Ise Dōchū no Maki 伊勢道中之巻 [Pilgrimage to Ise, or, On the Road to Ise, 2 hand scrolls - Emaki 絵巻] Height 15 ½” Length, Scroll One: Over 32 feet with 24 scenes along the way. Scroll Two: About 36 feet with 24 scenes….. The amount of work that went into this commission is startling. As some of the scenes are quite original and depict everyday life in Taishō Japan, one may assume the artist painted in studio from sketches he created along the way. The binding and box are of the highest quality…. A deluxe production. Kōka 弘華, artist Taishō 12 [1923] Through the years, the general opinion of the work done in the Nihonga genre has changed for the better, for good reason… There are many reasons, but perhaps the most significant is the understanding that Nihonga painting (and printmaking, for that matter - Shinhanga) was an adaptation to the new artistic opportunities made possible by the pigments, new artistic technologies in general. Materials sciences were exploding with the introduction of Western scientific methodology. New materials, both homegrown and imported , created new art. One might say that Nihonga painting and so-called “Shin-hanga” are closely related in that they expanded the depiction of traditional themes and subjects with new capabilities. It would take a while for the combination to become more harmonious, but the results could sometimes be extraordinary. The scrolls at hand were almost certainly the product of a wealthy patron from Kyoto wishing to inscribe a pilgrimage to the shrines at Ise. To that end, he commissioned this work from a painter whose art name was Kōka 弘華, presumably a local artist, as his paintings do occasionally surface in the marketplace in Kyoto, even today. Kōka had an extraordinary way with color… even a brief look at his work reveals a confidence and boldness which is very immediate, very pleasing. He manages to avoid cliché by recasting familiar scenes from the pilgrimage with power and interest…. He has also introduced several original views along the way to heighten the reality… Rainstorms, crowded streets. The quotidian contemporary enlivening the traditional… The brushwork is sure and supple…. Really a masterpiece of the genre. My gallery friends in Japan and I have struggled for years to figure out if the art name Kōka could have been an early career usage by a famous Nihonga practitioner of later years…. But, now, I am ready to send it on its way as a gifted moment by an unknown. Brilliant and unique….

A realistic social criticism of early twentieth century America, this tale provides insightful commentary into the contemporary economic and cultural realities of American suffering. Wharton (1862-1937) was a novelist known for producing copious novellas, poems, and books on travel and design in the latter part of her life, many of which are believed to be autobiographical. Her work has been praised for its use of dramatic irony, utilizing her station in the upper classes of society to compose incisive and critical stories of life in the first half of the twentieth century. She was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature and was the first woman to receive the Pulitzer Prize for Literature in 1921.

Description
4/4/52. Ike signed this as president and sent it to a Navy veteranOn April 4, 1949, twelve nations from Western Europe and North America signed the North Atlantic Treaty in Washington, D.C. A key feature of this treaty is Article 5, in which the signatory members agreed that ""an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all.” Initially, however, the alliance was not very well prepared to carry out the mission of defending its territory. In addition to grave shortages of troops and equipment, there was no command structure to direct the overall defense of Western Europe, just committees - known as ""Regional Planning Groups"" - that were charged with drawing up plans for the defense of their regions. The 12 original members were the United States, Canada, Britain, Belgium, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway and Portugal. All this changed after the outbreak of the Korean War in June 1950, which raised fears that Europe could face a similar threat over divided Germany. The nations of the alliance agreed to increase their defence efforts and began working on the creation of an integrated military command structure with an overall commander for NATO forces in Europe.Selecting the first Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) was easy, since everyone's first choice was the popular and respected U.S. Army Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, who had led allied forces in Europe during World War II. On December 19, 1950, the North Atlantic Council announced the appointment of General Eisenhower as the first Supreme Allied Commander. In 1952, Greece and Turkey joined in the alliance's first expansion.Document signed, by Dwight D. Eisenhower, first Supreme Allied Commander of Nato, stamped April 4, 1952, signed as President in February 1957, the first day cover honoring NATO along with the first NATO stamp honoring NATO. Comes with two letters relating to the cover sent to its owner, L. Dean Powell a Navy veteran. We have found no other signed examples of this cover having reached the market.

Edinburgh: William Blackwood and Sons, 1866 Three volumes. First edition, in Carter's "A" binding, with 4 pages of publisher advertisements and no catalog at the rear of Volume III. Publisher's cinnamon cloth, decorative borders stamped in blind to the boards, spines lettered in gilt. Near fine set with some toning to spines, tiny spot of soiling to fore edge of Volume I text block, light spotting to fore edge of Volume II text block, bookseller's stamp to rear pastedowns, and some blackening to top edges of text blocks. Overall, an excellent, unsophisticated set with crisp pages. Housed in a custom brick-red slip case. Felix Holt, the Radical is a social novel by Mary Anne Evans, a top writer of the Victorian Era who chose to write under a male pseudonym so that her works would be taken more seriously. In addition to writing novels, she edited and contributed to the left-wing journal The Westminster Review as one of the only female editors of her time. Her novels were praised for being socially and politically conscious and realistic depictions of country life. In Felix Holt, Eliot examines the social changes that occurred in the English countryside as a result of the First Reform Act of 1832, which reformed Parliament to reflect the new urban and rural dynamics that resulted from the Industrial Revolution. Rather than explain the events leading up to this reform, Eliot focuses on how public political policies affect the private lives of rural Englishmen. Felix Holt tells the story of a tumultuous election in the fictional town Treby Magna in the English Midlands, a small village previously unaffected by political goings-on that has been thrust into political turmoil by the Reform Act. Published around the time of the Second Reform Act of 1867, which extended enfranchisement to the working class, nearly doubling England's number of eligible voters, Felix Holt is a retrospective text that considers past legislation in juxtaposition with the new reform. . 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine.

Description
Stuttgart: Carl Hoffmann, 1840. Hardcover. Very Good. An early example of a quintessential German color plate book created for a juvenile audience, pedagogical in nature, with wonderful color plates printed on thin, cheap paper, and published under various imprints in or around Stuttgart. Small folio, 37 by 24 cm. Title leaf, Vorwart leaf, with preface by Zoller, followed by 29 hand-colored plates, and world map (two hemisphere maps on this plate). Only this final plate is not in color. Each of the plates has many small vignette illustrations of animals and plants from all over the world, with generally the animal illustrations dominated the page. The animals are of all types -- sea and land, mammals, reptiles, insects, birds, fish. Curiously, the groupings aren't really organized by region! However, the composition of the plates is invariably pleasing. Occasionally the vignette illustration has some background providing a setting. Each plate accompanied by facing page explanation (Erklaerung). Printing on one side of each leaf -- versos for plates, rectos for explanations. Condition: re-cased, with original pictorial pastedown on boards preserved and pasted onto new boards, these pastedowns suffering minimal loss along edges. These pastedowns do have stains and soil, but remain more than acceptable in their appearance. New endpapers. Slight cocking of the binding -- front overhangs slightly rear. Scattered soiling of the leaves within. Never does this rise to a disconcerting level. Other typical, non-disturbing wear.

Paris, France: Cahiers d'Art, 1952. Softcover. Fair- Reference copy only, sold as is, not returnable - staining and minor tears on wraps, book with various warps due to water, first 100 pages sound, ~20 pages near end sealed together and inaccessable without damaging book further, Rouault article is excellent for reference.. White wraps with duochrome illustration and black text. 101~300 pp. Features many bw and some color illustrations. Features article on Georges Rouault and many bw plates of his work. *Article is in French.* "The following notes on the work of Georges Rouault were suggested to us by the retrospective exhibition of his work at the Musee National d'art Moderne in Paris (July 9-October 26, 1952). As for the images that accompany this text, they were mostly chosen from among the most recent, those that best demonstrate Rouault's exceptional creative vigor. It is a truly surprising thing to see an artist at eighty-one years old regain his youth but rich in all the precious knowledge of experience. In these recent works, Rouault has returned to his old themes, but this time to express things as they are in their entirety. It is no longer a question of bruised hopes but of an almost mystical serenity." - translated from introduction in Rouault article.

Set during the American invasion of Afghanistan, The Shadow of the Crescent Moon begins and ends one rain-swept Friday morning in Mir Ali, a small town in Pakistan's Tribal Areas close to the Afghan border. Three brothers meet for breakfast. Soon after, the eldest, Aman Erum, recently returned from America, hails a taxi to the local mosque. Sikandar, a doctor, drives to the hospital where he works, but must first stop to collect his troubled wife, who has not joined the family that morning. No one knows where Mina goes these days. Sikandar is exhausted by Mina's instability and by the pall of grief that has enveloped his family. But when, later in the morning, the two are taken hostage by members of the Taliban, Mina will prove to be stronger than anyone could have imagined. The youngest of the three leaves for town on a motorbike. An idealist, Hayat holds strong to his deathbed promise to their father - to free Mir Ali from oppressors. Seated behind him is a beautiful, fragile girl whose life and thoughts are overwhelmed by the war that has enveloped the place of her birth. Three hours later their day will end in devastating circumstances. In this beautifully observed novel, individuals are pushed to make terrible choices. And as the events of this single morning unfold, one woman is at the center of it all.
