Description
Image size 185 x 120 mm; sheet size 230 x 187 mm. On laid paper. The subject, a young female Indian dancer, is depicted in a long multi-colored dress, jewelry, and headdress. Slightly worn; upper margin very slightly chipped; small pinhole to lower margin, not affecting image; minor overall creasing with slightly more pronounced horizontal crease. Svetoslav Roerich, born in St. Petersburg, was the son of noted Russian painter Nicholas Roerich (1874-1947). Initially studying under his father, he subsequently attended art classes in London, at Columbia University, and at Harvard. He first visited India in 1923, during which time the present watercolor was most likely executed. Much of Roerich's early work is lost. "Svetoslav started drawing at an early age and took up molding, attended classes of the Arts Encouragement Society School, created designs for home theatre settings, and even helped his father in his work on theatre design sketches. In 1913, he entered the Karl May Gymnasium in Saint-Petersburg where he studied until 1916. From 1919, Svetoslav Roerich studied architecture in London, at the Royal Academy of Arts. After a year, he continued his education in the USA, firstly at Columbia University and then at Harvard University. He also attended the the Massachusetts University Sculpture Department. In 1923, Svetoslav Roerich visited India for the first time. There he became acquainted with the most famous architectural masterpieces of Indian culture, as well as with the ancient and modern art of that country. In India, he laid the foundations of his unique collection of Oriental works of art that, unfortunately, went almost completely lost after his death. From 1931, living permanently in India, Svetoslav Roerich actively participated in its public and cultural life. He dearly loved that country and it became his second Motherland. In many of his wonderful canvases, Svetoslav Roerich sang the praises of India's unique beauty, diversity of cultural traditions and subtleness of spiritual achievements." International Roerich Memorial Trust Online We would like to thank Mr. Leonid Winestein for his assistance in the identification of the artist's monogram.

London, 1740. Unbound. Very Good. 1 leaf, with a large elaborate vignette to head illustrating the song with music and text below set for voice and figured bass. Signed in the plate by the engraver. G. Bickham junr. Ca 326 x 200 mm. (12.75" x 7.85") [plate mark]. Slightly worn; minor browning to edges; slight dampstaining. From the second edition of Bickham's monumental work, first published in 1737-1739. BUC p. 107. RISM BII p. 245. "[Bickham ?1706-1771] was principally famous in music circles for his two illustrated folio volumes The Musical Entertainer, first issued in fortnightly parts, each containing four plates, from January 1737 to December 1739. The 200 plates are songs, headed and surrounded with pictorial embellishments illustrative of the song ..., and engraved in the style of and even copied directly from Gravelot and Watteau. This work was the first of its kind to be published in England and quickly produced imitators such as Lampe's British Melody, engraved by Benjamin Cole." Frank Kidson et al. in Grove Music Online. A charming engraving. The Musical Entertainer is considered one of the finest 18th century illustrated books. Complete copies of this monumental work are exceptionally rare.

Description
np [New York?]: np, 1968. First Edition. Good.. Undated, though the program notes mention Warhol's 25-hour "****" as having been recently released (it first screened in December 1967) and dates one quoted article as being from March 1968, which would place this event in early-mid 1968. Also mentioned is a Warhol film based on a "title created especially for Malanga by Tennessee Williams," "S & F," for which we have never seen another reference. A fascinating document, as it details Malanga's early relationship with Warhol, including how the two met, Malanga's early work as Warhol's assistant making silkscreen paintings, and Malanga's work with Warhol in triple-screen presentations of the "Screen Tests," wherein Malanga would read poetry as the Screen Tests were shown. Also included is a great deal of unpublished biographical information, some unique to this document and some reprinted (and in some cases, "updated") from other credited sources, and mention is made that Malanga has starred in "over two dozen underground films," whereas IMDB only credits him as having starred in 13 films as of 1968. Perhaps most important to the document is the discussion of the making--and in one case, the very existence--of three Malanga films, including "The Recording Zone Operator," "Alla ricerca del miracoloso" ("...shot in juxtaposed Eastman Color"), and "Prelude to an International Velvet Debutante," The latter two films are discussed in depth here. IMDB only credits Malanga as director for one film, "Academy Leader" (1965), a film not discussed here, and Wikipedia notes the existence of all but the third, "Prelude to an International Velvet Debutante," a title we can only find referenced as a poem. The program ends with two Malanga poems, "Tony's Angel Necklace" and an untitled poem. Malanga's first known intersection with cinema was Andy Warhol's "The Thirteen Most Beautiful Boys" (Malanga was one of the boys, as was Dennis Hopper) in 1964. He would appear in over a dozen more Warhol films and shorts between 1964 and 1967, and recently appeared as himself (and was associate producer for) the redboutable "Factory Girl" (2006), a biographical film about Edie Sedgewick's years with Andy Warhol. OCLC locates nine scattered copies, with most major institutions lacking. Wraps. 4to. Side-stapled legal-sized wraps. Cover printe offset, remainder mimeo. 10pp. plus cover. Cover image of Malanga and Tony Kinna (sic) from Malanga's film THE RECORDING ZONE OPERATOR. Good only. Rear leaf with noticeable staining and detatched from staples. Folded through middle. Creasing here and there, with moderate edge-wear and soil. Worn but complete.

Description
JOHN WESLEY POWELL (1834-1902). John Wesley Powell was the first director of the Bureau of Ethnology at the Smithsonian Institution and the second director of the USGS from 1881 to 1894. He gained fame for his explorations of the west including his 1869 and 1871 explorations of the Colorado and Green Rivers.TLS. 1 pg. May 4, 1893. Cambridge, Massachusetts. A typed letter signed JW Powell to N. S. Shaler. Dear Sir: In response to your letter of May 1 I beg to say that I think it is best to complete the work in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut, where you have topographic maps, before engaging in new work in the States to the north. Yours very truly, JW Powell. During this time John Wesley Powell was the second director of the United States Geographical Survey (USGS). N. S. Shaler was the head of USGS Atlantic Division and a Harvard Professor of Geology. In 1893, he was overseeing geologic mapping of the Cretaceous and Tertiary formations along the East Coast, which is likely the work being referenced in this letter. This letter is in fine condition and Powells signature is a scarce signature.
