Description
London: William Heinemann, 1898 First edition, first printing, second state, with 32 pages of advertisements to rear. Publisher's gray cloth, with front board and spine lettered in black. Very good, with some toning to spine, very modest spotting to spine and front board, a touch of rubbing to foot of spine, light rubbing to corners, front board very gently bowed, light offsetting to endpapers, and light scattered spotting to text. Overall, a handsome and sturdy copy. L. W. Currey, "Science Fiction and Fantasy Authors" p. 526. The War of the Worlds is H. G. Wells' famous novel about a Martian invasion of Earth, narrated by an unnamed British protagonist. The book is divided into two parts: "Book One: The Coming of the Martians" and "Book Two: The Earth Under the Martians." Credited with popularizing "Martians" in the science fiction genre, the book explores the precariousness of the social order and the dangers of technology. The book was first serialized simultaneously in Pearson's Magazine in the UK and The Cosmopolitan in the US between April and December 1897. It has received many adaptations, none as notable as Orson Welles' 1938 radio play, which famously fooled some listeners into believing an actual Martian invasion was underway. More recently, the book was adapted into a 2005 film directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good.

Description
1963. Tereshkova, Valentina. Signed photograph commemorating the historic flight of the Soviet cosmonaut who became the first woman to travel into space during the Cold War competition between the United States and the Soviet Union. Valentina Tereshkova launched aboard Vostok 6 in June 1963, completing a three day mission in which she orbited the Earth forty eight times. Her flight followed closely after the first human spaceflight by Yuri Gagarin in 1961 and marked a major milestone both in the development of human space exploration and in the participation of women in aerospace history. Tereshkova, Valentina. Signed Photograph. Color photograph measuring approximately 8 x 10 inches. The image is signed in blue ink at the lower right corner in cursive Cyrillic and includes the inscription "Vostok 6." The portrait presents Tereshkova as a cosmonaut of the Soviet space program and commemorates the mission that established her international reputation as the first woman to travel into space. Tereshkova's flight formed a central moment in the early years of the space race, when both superpowers sought technological and symbolic achievements demonstrating the capabilities of their space programs. The Vostok 6 mission represented a milestone not only for Soviet aerospace engineering but also for the global recognition of women's participation in scientific and technological fields traditionally dominated by men. Tereshkova's accomplishment became an enduring symbol of women's achievements in space exploration and Cold War scientific competition. Tiny crease in the upper right corner; otherwise well preserved. Overall very good condition.

Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 1952, 1959. First edition. ANCIENT SCIENCE BY FOUNDER OF HISTORY OF SCIENCE GEORGE SARTON--INSCRIBED TO ABRAHAM FLEXNER, REFORMER OF AMERICAN MEDICAL EDUCATION. Two 16x24.5 hardcover volumes, blue cloth binding, gilt title to spines. Vol 1, inscribed front free endpaper, "To Dr. Abraham Flexner/ in admiration & friendship/ George Sarton." i-xxvi, 646 pp, 103 figures, general bibliography, index; Vol 2, i-xxvi554 pp, 112 figures, general bibliography, index. Corners bumped, wear to spine ends, very good in very good minus dust jackets with edge tears and light soiling. GEORGE SARTON (1884-1956) was a Belgian chemist and historian who is considered the founder of the discipline of history of science. Sarton's ultimate goal was to achieve an integrated philosophy of science that provided a connection between the sciences and the humanities, which he referred to as "the new humanism". Sarton intended to complete an exhaustive nine-volume history of science; By the time of his death, he had completed only the first three volumes. Sarton had been inspired for his project by his study of Leonardo da Vinci, but he had not reached this period in history before dying. After his death a representative selection of his papers was edited by Dorothy Stimson, published by Harvard University Press in 1962. His major works include the 2 volumes offered here. PROVENANCE: ABRAHAM FLEXNER (1866 - 1959) was an American educator, best known for his role in the 20th century reform of medical and higher education in the United States and Canada. After founding and directing a college-preparatory school in his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, Flexner published a critical assessment of the state of the American educational system in 1908 titled The American College: A Criticism. His work attracted the Carnegie Foundation to commission an in-depth evaluation into 155 medical schools in the US and Canada. It was his resultant self-titled Flexner Report, published in 1910, that sparked the reform of medical education in the United States and Canada. Flexner was also a founder of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, which brought together some of the greatest minds in history to collaborate on intellectual discovery and research.

Description
Georgetown, CA: Talisman Press, 1965. Revised Edition. 361pp. Octavo [23.5 cm] Black cloth with the title gilt stamped on the spine. Very good/Very good. Caleb Greenwood was a giant figure in the early West. From his early days along the Missouri River as a trapper until years later as an octogenarian he piloted the Ide Party over the Sierra Nevada in 1845, Greenwood was involved with many of the great happenings that shaped the Western history. This book deals with his early life in the fur trade, his important role in the overland emigration to California in 1844-1845, his subsequent contribution as one of the more important trailblazers and guides, his part in the relief of the Donner Party, and his activities along the American River after the discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill in 1848. Kelly originally authored and privately published this book in 1936. In a letter several years later, now in the Charles Kelly Papers at the Utah Historical Society, Morgan wrote that he had a "whole raft corrections" for the book should Kelly ever decide to revise it. This edition, completely rewritten and including new information, was the fruit of that letter and their cooperation. Saunders 52. Dale L. Morgan (1914 - 1971), was an American historian, accomplished researcher, biographer, editor, and critic. He specialized in material on Utah history, Mormon history, the American fur trade, and overland trails. His work is known both for its comprehensive research and accuracy and for the fluid imagery of his prose. Charles Kelly (1889-1971) was a western historian of note, writing the first (and best) book on Butch Cassidy and the Wild Bunch. He also wrote books on the Hastings Cutoff (Salt Desert Trails) and the fur trade (Miles Goodyear and Old Greenwood. Kelly also served as the first superintendent of Capitol Reef National Monument in Southern Utah.
