Description
Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1950. First Edition. Near Fine/Very Good+. First edition, first printing. Association copy signed by James Stewart Martin on the half-title and inscribed to Senator Wayne Morse. viii, [2], 326 pp. Bound in publisher's light green cloth stamped in dark red. Near Fine with very light edgewear and edge toning, light cup ring to front board, and small smudge to front free endpaper. In a Very Good+ unclipped dust jacket with sunned spine panel, moderate wear, and faint cup ring to front panel. Rare signed. A cult classic work of antifascism. James Stewart Martin was in charge of breaking up the German industrial machine after the Second World War, but he was thwarted by powerful Americans and Englishmen who had done good business with the Nazis and had no desire to put their own fortunes at risk. Martin inscribed this copy to Senator Wayne Morse, a fiery Oregonian who was one of just two senators to oppose the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution that gave President Lyndon B. Johnson the ability to wage war in Vietnam. Like the author of this book, Morse — who continued to oppose the Vietnam War for its duration — knew what it was like to be the voice of conscience.

Description
[n.p., 1820. Stab stitched manuscript, 9.5" x 6.5", pp. [2], 409, [1]; text in Traditional Chinese; limp cloth covers; covers soiled and roughly restitched, first leaf partially perished with loss to text, about half a dozen pages adhered to each other, one leaf chipped with some loss to text, some nibbling to the top of first 60 pages, not affecting text, which is neatly executed and legible with a few dozen corrections, good. Hui ji ya su tong shi wui yin was a southern Hokkien rhyming dictionary produced in the early 19th century by Xie Xiulan and later printed in 1869. This manuscript copy follows the general structure of the printed edition, but despite our best (albeit illiterate) efforts we could not identify any point in which the text aligned. While the 15 listed tones are the same, the section headers for our copy do not seem to include the words in the printed edition and vice versa. For example, our manuscript has headings for the following: 春,朝,丹,花,香,佳,川,書,湏,今, etc., none of which seem to appear in the printed edition. Whether this is an entirely separate project, a portion of the original manuscript that failed to make it to print, or an offshoot enhancement, we cannot say.

Description
New York: The Viking Press, 1938. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/good. Politi, Leo. First printing, sixmo size, [41] pp., inscribed by Leo Politi. Leo Politi, born Atiglio Leoni Politi (1908-1996) was a renowned author and illustrator of mainly children's books; he won the Caldecott Medal in 1950 for his "Song of the Swallows". Leo Politi's art often reflected a multiculturalism that was unusual for the time. "Little Pancho" was Politi's first book, the one which established him as an illustrator for children's books. This volume made incredibly special by Politi having hand-coloured four of the illustrations with original water-colours, the first of the four signed by him. In addition, Politi inscribed the book to "the little boy Paul", which may have been Politi's son by that name. ___DESCRIPTION: String-bound in illustrated paper over boards with "Little Pancho" on the front, white lettering and peach decorations on the spine, and with Pancho and his dog, Coco, on the back board, illustrated endpapers in peach and white, Politi's inscription on the verso of the front free endpaper ("to 'the little / boy' Paul / from Pancho / and Leo Politi") in black ink, year of publication ("1938") on both title and copyright pages, the four hand-coloured illustrations on pp. [7], [11], [22], and [34], many of the other pages with illustrations in brown, peach and white; sixmo size (6 1/8" by 5"), unpaginated with 20 leaves, [41] pp. With the dust jacket showing the correct price of $0.50 for the first printing, the jacket illustrations mirror those on the binding, short summary of book on front flap, author bio on back flap. ___CONDITION: Volume a solid very good, with clean boards, straight corners with minimal rubbing, a strong, square text block, the interior is clean and bright, with the colours on the hand-coloured illustrations deep and vibrant; light overall edgewear and a few stray marks on the boards, the book bound such that the endpapers are not a continuous sheet, the two endpapers at the front beginning to separate slightly (the string binding still strong) and with the stamp of a prior owner (name, title, school and city) on the verso of the front free endpaper directly beneath Politi's inscription. Dust jacket is good only, unclipped, all component parts present and attached; with a fair amount of overall wear including a closed tear approx. 3" diagonally down the front panel which a prior owner closed with cello tape on the jacket verso and did a bit of colouring on the verso, with old stains on the bottom portion of the front panel visible mostly on the verso, please see pictures and request more if needed. Even with its condition issues still a remarkably special book, unique in the marketplace. ___CITATION: Baumgarten, Artist, p. 159 (with DJ price of $0.50). ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Description
1947. Hindu-Muslim unrest press archive depicting communal violence in India from the Partition crisis through later urban riots, 1947-1974. Partition created one of the largest migrations of the twentieth century, with millions of Hindus, Muslims, and Sikhs crossing newly drawn borders and hundreds of thousands killed in retaliatory violence. Independent India continued to face communal outbreaks in the decades after 1947, especially in cities where religious processions, rumors, police action, and segregated neighborhoods could turn local disputes into arson, curfew, and military patrols. Photo archive of 8 silver gelatin press photographs, mostly measuring 8" x 10", India, 1947-1974. Soldiers patrol damaged streets in New Delhi, helmeted troops stand in empty roadways, civilians walk past burned buildings, and police escort men through riot-damaged neighborhoods. Press captions identify "Muslim and Hindu riots in Bombay," "New Delhi riot area," Ahmedabad unrest, and "the city of curfew" after communal violence. Several mounts retain United Press, Acme Newspictures, Cleveland Press, and other agency stamps, with typed captions, crop marks, dates, and editorial notations. The group follows communal violence from Partition's immediate aftermath into the 1960s and 1970s, when Indian newspapers and foreign wire services continued to treat Hindu-Muslim riots as major international news. Handling wear, editorial cropping marks, minor creasing, caption attachments, and minor surface wear; overall in very good condition. A tightly captioned press group showing the visible aftermath of communal violence through streets, bodies, police escorts, army patrols, and burned commercial districts.
