Description
Los Angeles, California: The Rafu Shimpo / L.A. Japanese Daily News, 1937. [appx 90], 485 pp. Limp cloth. With illustrations in color and black and white. Near Fine condition with some light wear to covers.. A very scarce directory of the Japanese-American community, with a focus on Los Angeles, but also covering other areas of California including Terminal Island and San Pedro and San Francisco, and other states such as Utah and Washington, published by the Rafu Shimpo. The directory lists the physical addresses and phone numbers of the residents. The first ninety or so unpaginated pages show photographs of prominent businesses and residents, and also include advertisements for Japanese-American businesses. Togo Tanaka, an editor at the paper, lobbied unsuccessfully for the paper’s continuation in the event of a war with Japan. He was eventually sent to Manzanar and the paper ceased publication in 1942. It would resume operations in 1946 due to the efforts of Akira Komai, the son of owner Toyosaku Komai, who stealthily hid the Japanese type under the floorboards of the office and paid the rent for the duration of the conflict. The directory continued until 1941. This issue, presumably published in 1937, was the first in the series. Yokoi, Iris (September 19, 1993), "LITTLE TOKYO - Extra! Extra! Description
1840. GOETHE, Johann Wolfgang von. Goethe's Theory of Colours; Translated from the German, with notes by Charles Lock Eastlake. xlviii, 423 pp., illustrated with four lithographic plates (3 with hand colouring). 8vo, 220 x 135 mm, bound in original cloth. London: John Murray, 1840. First Edition in English, inscribed to William Allan R.A. by the publisher. Goethe's work 'Zur Farbenlehre' was first published in 1810, and was the first to describe the psychological effects of colour. "For a profoundly creative and challenging response to Goethe's science by a painter of real genius we have to look to Britain, to the art of Turner. Turner was almost seventy by the time he made his detailed study of Goethe's Farbenlehre in Charles Eastlake's 1840 annotated translation, but his response was not that of an old man rigidly set in his ways. Two complex paintings of supreme quality were the remarkable result of his 'dialogue' with Goethe. His immediate reactions on reading Goethe's treatise are contained in a series of marginal notes in his copy, ranging from approbatory references to terse exclamations of disagreement. 'Poor Dame Nature' he wrote, when he felt that Goethe was doing less than justice to the ultimate source of all visual beauty. He was attracted by much of what the German author was saying, particularly with respect to the integral relationship of colour and tone, but suspicious of the more rigid prescriptions and hesitant in the face of the anti-Newtonian polemics... (Kemp, The Science of Art, p. 299). Rebacked, with part of the original spine laid down. See also R. L. Herbert, Yale Library Gazette, (July l974), pp. 6-7. Buckley, Color theory, p. 128. Babson 151. Birren Collection. 271. Not in Edelstein. Not in Wurmfeld, Color documents. Ruhemann/Plesters, p. 457 with an interesting note. Finally, see D. Robertson, Sir Charles Eastlake and the Victorian art world, pp. 54-55.

Description
Washington, 1861. No binding. Fine. Autograph Letter Signed, to Thomas Ewing, his father. Washington, May 22, 1861. Written in pencil. 6 pp., 4 7/8 x 7 3/4 in. ""Genl Scott is in bad humor with the administration for appointing Reeder Brig Genl in regular army ... We have the idea he will not favor Cump's appt, except as Colonel...""Ewing informs his father of political machinations in Washington and early Civil War plans and appointments. He painstakingly weighs the chances of his foster brother (and brother-in-law), William T. ""Cump"" Sherman, obtaining a general's commission. He also offers a sober analysis of the relative strengths of the Union and Confederate armies in the Eastern theater. ""The general impression is the first battle, after Pickens, will be at Norfolk. The Govt. is not ready. Genl Scott says Genl Impatience is the only opposing General he fears. At present, it is plain the enemy can put man for man in the field anywhere in eastern Virginia with us."" Complete TranscriptWashington May 22d 1861Dear Father I have been laid up for several days with a swollen knee joint (sub acute sinovetis) - My 15 nights campaigning resulted in a severe cold of which this attack is the climax. I shall probably have to keep to the house for a week before my knee is fully well - absolute rest of the joint being necessary to speedy cure. I have taken to bed, though as well in all other respects as ever. I thought Cump would advise you as to the movements here in his behalf & their probable result. As I have written him requesting [2] and supposed you were there until I got a letter from there a few days ago. I have been, either with John or Charles Thomson, at different times, the President & pretty near all the Cabinet & Genl. Scott. The question as to his appointment to place of Brig Genl or that of Qr Master Genl. (both of equal grade) in the regular army has been before the Cabinet twice & was yesterday refused to Genl Scott & the Secy of War, & will be by them determined very soon - probably in a day or two. Genl. Scott is in very bad humor with the Administration [3] for appointing Reeder Brig Genl in regular army: & for neglecting to consult him in other matters. We all have the idea that he will not favor Cumps appt., except as Colonel, for which he has him down on his roll of proposed recommendations: & that he wants Anderson for Brig Genl All the principal officers here, save Genl Scott, are heartily for Cump for Brig Genl or Qr Mr Genl - The old Genl however always speaks of him in the highest terms of praise- I am sorry to say there is a doubt with some of the Cabinet whether Cump sufficiently sympathizes with the Gov. to make his appt. [4] to so high a place as Brig Genl exactly right- his declination of the place of chief clerk of War Dept to be billowed by plea of apt Secy, so handsomely & so warmly urged on him by the President & Cabinet, hurt his standing - Blair spoke of it in Cabinet with considerable feeling. One thing is certain - Cump will either be Brig or Qr Master Genl - or be Colonel of a 2200 Regt - I will advise you at once when the matter is settled- My affair has been dragging through, slowly, being to stand examination in all its shapes from Secy & Prest - The form of mortgage [5] and bonds, after being before the Prest for a week is at last approved - unless there is strong opposition from the Indians in shape of protests gotten up by the new agent (which I wouldn't fear) I will have the $300,000 paid with the Treasury & invested in our bonds in a week - I will four or five days thereafter start for Ohio & Kansas. The general impression is the first battle, after Pickens, will be at Norfolk. The Govt. is not ready. Genl [6] Scott says Genl Impatience is the only opposing General he fears. At present, it is plain the enemy can put man for man in the field anywhere in eastern Virginia with us. I doubt very much if there is a battle in Virginia except at Pickens for a full month or more - I am sincerel... (See website for full description)

Three parts in one volume [8]+xxiv+232 pages; [6]+269+[11] pages with map; 213+[3] pages. Duodecimo (7" x 5") three parts bound in contemporary half vellum with brown spine labels in gilt over marbled boards. (Howes C149); Sabin 10911) Second edition. Gian Rinaldo Carli, also known by other names, was an Italian economist, historian, and antiquarian. He distinguished himself as a student and young scholar. In 1744 at the age of 24, he was appointed by the Venetian Senate to the University of Padua's newly established professorship of astronomy and navigation. At the same time, he was entrusted with superintendence over the Venetian marine. During these years he was part of a major dispute in Italian academia over the existence of sorcerers, with the vast majority of the academics siding with the Girolamo Tartarotti against the Marquis of Maffei and Count Carli's sharp skepticism. He filled his offices ably for seven years before resigning them to study economics and history. He works on economics attracted the attention of Leopold of Tuscany, afterwards emperor, who placed him at the head of his economics council and board of public instruction in 1765. In 1769, he became Privy Councillor and, in 1771, president of a new council of finances. In his old age, he was relieved of the duties of these offices while continuing to receive their income. During his leisure, he produced works on Italian history and other topics. This work contains his letters theorizing about the origins of the American Indians, possibly from Europe via Atlantis to Brazil; with a long dedication to Benjamin Franklin by the publisher Isidor Bianchi. Expanded second edition. Condition: Corners bumped, minor wear, a bit of marginal worming to the first few leaves else a very good copy.
