Abbey, "Travel" 262; Graesse VI, 400; Brunet V, 1379. ◆Moderate rubbing to joints and elsewhere, covers with some scars, other minor problems externally, but the original bindings entirely solid--and surprisingly so for such an immense book with so many fabulous pictures to look at. Preliminary leaves and text lightly to substantially foxed, a half dozen plates with faint overall browning, one tissue guard missing, the margins of perhaps half the engravings with foxing (usually light, though noticeable in three or four cases in the second volume), but still a very pleasing copy of a beautifully illustrated book, the marginal foxing seldom distracting, and the engraved images themselves clear and clean, afflicted by neither foxing nor the dreaded offsetting from the text. This is an extraordinarily rare copy of one of the most beautiful color plate travel books having to do with Italy. The large and luminous views of Sicily in our two volumes capture the magic of the island as experienced by the traveller of the early 19th century. Sicily's well-preserved Greek temples are, of course, featured, but port scenes, Medieval churches, picturesque villages, and the interior of Etna's crater are also depicted, all in exquisite color. The engravings, each accompanied by letter press explanations, are of great interest and beauty, and all but one of them are full-blooded tableaux, rather than plans or assemblages of small images. The size of the engraved surface varies on the page, as does the distance of the subject from the viewer: we are treated to everything from wide panoramic views to confining inner spaces. While the colors cannot be called pastel, they are far from garish, with lovely grays typically giving a softness to a scene that often employs subtle shades of yellow, blue, and green. The plates are memorable for their use of light and shadow to give a convincing feeling of three-dimensionality amidst luminous skies, darkened interiors, and a number of other variably lit settings. The book was originally published in 24 parts, and includes an historical précis by Gigault de La Salle giving an overview of events from antiquity to his own time. Abbey calls the work "the most ambitious of the coloured aquatint books edited by J. F. d'Ostervald," who produced a number of works on the picturesque, including two famous oversized editions focusing on regions in France. The book has always commanded a premium price: the unbound sheets were sold at the time of publication for the whopping sum of £34. In his note to the reader, Ostervald tells of his search among the portfolios of the artists of Switzerland, Germany, and England for the perfect materials for this collection. The plates cite the names of the artist and engraver, and Abbey notes that "English artists or engravers were responsible for nearly half" of the plates. Among these was Richard Parkes Bonington (1802-28), the tragically short-lived painter whose romantic works were greatly admired by Delacroix. Abbey estimates that about 500 copies of the book were produced, and comments that the book is "certainly rare, in this country at all events, only three copies being reported at auction in the last fifty years." The rarity of the book has, not surprisingly, increased since Abbey's remark: complete copies with colored plates are still hard to find..

A breath of rubbing to extremities, isolated trivial smudges or small stains, but A VERY FINE SET, clean and fresh internally, with none of the offsetting usually found in extra-illustrated sets, and in well-preserved bindings that are most attractive on the shelf. This is a particularly appealing copy of Jesse's entertaining and informative tour of his beloved city and the characters who have inhabited it over the centuries; it has been professionally "grangerized" with more than 300 relevant illustrations, all with tissue guards; it has been beautifully bound by a master in fine morocco; and, despite these obvious benefits, it has seen very little use. John Heneage Jesse (1809-74) wrote a number of popular historical works, including royal biographies and court memoirs, that drew praise for their conscientious attention to fact and detail, if not for their originality or wit. Described by DNB as "a dedicated Londoner, [who] seldom ventured away from the metropolitan area," Jesse leads us here through the districts of his home city, relating anecdotes, noting the locations of momentous events, and pointing out architectural treasures. The added portraits, scenes, and views help to bring his account to life, and the diligent use of tissue guards has prevented these illustrations from affecting the adjacent leaves in a detrimental way. The very attractive bindings are the work of French-born binder Lucien Broca (1829-1910), who immigrated to London in 1875. According to Tidcombe's "Women Bookbinders," Broca was a "superb trade finisher" who originally worked for Antoine Chatelin, then went into partnership with German émigré Simon Kauffmann from 1876 to 1889. Tidcombe and Sarah Prideaux's former pupil Katherine Adams believed that most of the bindings attributed to Prideaux between 1890 and 1900--some 290 volumes--were actually done by Broca, with Tidcombe giving the Frenchman credit for the "best Prideaux bindings." Prideaux never publicly acknowledged his work, perhaps for fear of disappointing fans of the most famous woman bookbinder in England. Broca moved on to his own business as an "Art Binder" in 1901, and our binding was probably done about that time. The beauty of the present design is dependent on his perfection of finish, and crispness of line and solidity of impression--Broca's hallmarks--wins the day here. This set is from the library of American antiquarian Joel Cheney Wells (1874-1960). Together with his brother, Albert B. Wells (1872-1953), he built an important collection of early American clocks, which now forms the basis of the collection of the Old Sturbridge Village Museum in Massachusetts. His primary business interest was in the eyeglasses industry; he is credited with multiple innovations in the production of glasses and bifocals, which is referenced in the pair of glasses concealed in the border of his bookplate..

The most popular of Vietnamese apocryphal Buddhist scriptures, the Avalokiteśvara Scripture of Five Hundred Names emblematizes the popularity of Avalokiteśvara (V. Quan thế âm; Ch. Guan shi yin) worship during the Nguyễn dynasty (1802-1945). Early printed copies of this work are very rare: we find no copies outside of Vietnam. "The total number of apocryphal Buddhist scriptures from Vietnam has not been fully calculated. Among them, the Avalokiteśvara Scripture of Five Hundred Names is the most well-known, likely due to the Vietnamese people's fondness for reciting the name of Quan thế âm. This scripture, like the Gaowang guanshiyin jing 高王觀世音經 [T. 2898, a Chinese apocryphal text], contributed greatly to the development of Avalokiteśvara worship in Vietnam. The earliest extant edition is that of Minh Mạng 21 (1840), but scholars believe the appearance of the 'Names of Five Hundred Avalokiteśvara' practice in Vietnam can be traced to before Cảnh Thịnh 5 (1797)," the date of the earliest edition of a liturgical compilation by the influential monk Tuệ Đăng Chân Nguyên 慧燈真源 (1647-1726) of the Trúc Lâm 竹林 lineage of Vietnamese Buddhism, who already mentions the 500 names of the bodhisattva. See 李貴民, "再製與變異--越南漢傳佛教典籍的轉化" (2021), pp. 127-28. The indigenization of the Buddhist figure of Avalokiteśvara in Vietnamese society has been the topic of an emergent body of scholarship. In their 2018 article, Nguyễn Tô Lan and Rostislav Berezkin point out that the monk Tuệ Đăng Chân Nguyên, mentioned above is also responsible for an early adaptation of the bodhisattva's hagiography written in the indigenous nôm characters, titled Wondrously Composed National Version of the Original Deeds of Guanyin of the Southern Sea (V. Nam Hải Quan Âm bản hạnh quốc ngữ diệu soạn 南海觀音本行國語妙撰). "The form of [this text] is noteworthy. It is written in the indigenous six-eight verse meter, which...reveals that this early adaptation was intended to be recited...[and] undoubtedly facilitated the memorization of such texts. It is quite probable that the National Version of the Original Deeds of Guanyin was transmitted orally and thus represented the popularization of this vernacular story among the common people, especially women, in Vietnam."-Nguyễn & Berezkin, "From Chinese Precious Scrolls to Vietnamese True Scriptures," p. 155. Written entirely in Chinese rather than nôm characters, the Avalokiteśvara Scripture of Five Hundred Names - which was part of the same religious complex around the bodhisattva - is also composed to facilitate oral recitation, having the structure of a liturgy rather than a typical sutra. The text opens with two half-leaf woodcut illustrations of Śākyamuni and Avalokiteśvara, followed by incense offering and willow-branch cleansing prayers, including Sanskrit mantras in sinographic transliteration. The bulk of the text is a long series of homages (V. nam mô 南無) to the names of 500 Avalokiteśvara, concluding with the prayers of repentance and aspiration. This main text is followed by a short True Scripture of Deliverance from Suffering, As Said by the Buddha (V. Phật thuyết cứu khổ chân kinh 佛說救苦真經) in three folding leaves, containing additional texts and mantra for incantation. The volume ends with the dedication of merit and the instruction that "the crowd may stand up and be released from their seats," suggesting the liturgical use of the text within a community consisting of both monastic and lay practitioners. A comparison with the digitized copies held at the National Library of Vietnam (shelf no. R.1057) and the Thắng Nghiêm temple (shelf no. TN.043) shows our copy to be the Thành Thái 成泰 10 (1898) edition, the woodblocks for which were kept at the Xiển Pháp temple 闡法寺 in Hà Nội. The title-page is lacking in our copy. As mentioned above, we find no other copy of this text outside Vietnam. Good copy. Very good: moderate wear, occasional minor spots of soiling. This is a run of several early issues of SMads, a BDSM personal ads service. According to more than one leather history website as well as the Leather Archives & Museum, SMads was edited by Marshall Loeb and was in publication from 1972 to 1987. According to an article in Drummer 41 (November 1980), SMads was, in its time, "the most upfront collection of sexuality available. Every specific sexual desire, from basic S&M to scat and water sports, heavy bondage to shaving and piercing appeared in its pages." Each issue is filled with exceptionally explicit personal ads, but there is much more here for the careful researcher, e.g. an ad for "an S/M ranch in Texas with barn, corral, cattle, gear and equipment has openings for slaves." There are also ads for more than one LGBTQ+ correspondence club as well as BDSM mail order businesses including R.F.M. Also important is that the run contains at least 13 drawings, including at least one full centerfold, by Martin Van De Logt, better known as "Martin of Holland." According to Tomoffinland.org, "Martin of Holland's art appeals to very specific tastes, and to call it extreme might be a bit of an understatement. His passion for the subject matter and his unflinching imagination set him a part from those who crave social approval or critical adulation . . . Though many in his home country are unfamiliar with his works, his impact on one of the most socially progressive countries in the world was profound. As the last individual in the Netherlands to be arrested and incarcerated for producing and distributing his own pornography in the 1950s and 60s , the civil rights ramifications of his multiple year imprisonment helped insure that the generations that followed were free from bias and bigotry hidden behind and inside all acts of censorship." OCLC shows five institutions with holdings over two entries. Looking at respective library databases, two have one issue each, one has eleven, and two do not list specific holdings. Nister at Nuremburg (Bavaria). 12mo; [16pp]; gilt stamped stiff scalloped-edge wrapper with chromolithographed pastoral scene in a fan shaped cartouche to front; gold cord binding; all edges gilt; decorated title page; 7 full page sepia illustrations with titles; light shelf soiling; very good plus. Features poetry from: Clifton Bingham (1859-1913), E. [Edith] Nisbet (1858-1924), [Henry Wadsworth] Longfellow (1807-1882), Adelaide Procter (1825-1864), and HMW, presumably Helen Maria Williams (1761-1827). All included poets are British with the exception of Longfellow. Bingham was not only a poet but a lyricist and frequently wrote for children. Nister's selection of poets may be most interesting for his choice of women. All three were social activists and non-conformist. Nesbit was a political activist and co-founder of the Fabian Society, Procter was a feminist and champion of the unemployed and homeless, and Williams was an ex-patriot living in France. She was a religious dissenter and abolitionist, a supporter of the ideals of the French Revolution she spent some time in a French jail.
