Boards with embossed designs and borders with gilt stamped titles on both front and back. Spine with five raised bands with compartment decoration similar to boards. Titles in gilt in second compartment. Gilt board edges and gilt decorated turn-ins. a.e.g. Marbled end-papers. 73 "...pictures, by memebers of the national Academy of Design. Engraved by Bobbett & Hooper". Square, tight and clean throughout with no foxing or interior blemishes. Page edges only just starting to tone but barely. Gentle rubbing to spine ends and tips a few quite minor scuffs to boards. Contemporary ownership signatures on front paste-down and end-paper. One in the year of publication and the other in 1874. Very well-preserved. Anthology of excerpts from poems from well-known, and not so well-known pets through the ages, as well as accompanying commentary. A simply gorgeous collectable copy.

AAS #608883. OCLC only locates 1 copy at AAS. A small gift or novelty book of the type first made popular in the late 19th century. An uplifting poem praising the arrival of spring and illustrated with delicate lithographs. Ferdinand Schuyler Mathews (1854-1938) was a poet and author of natural history books, many for children.

[New Haven, Connecticut]: [George Beckwith], 1867. Good. Toned with water staining, dust soiling, some chipping/short tears. Lacking original wrappers and at least one leaf (cf. Hathi Trust copy).. A scarce copy of an 1868 almanac published by George Beckwith (Issue No. 21) in New Haven for residents of Connecticut and adjacent states. This copy lacks the original wrappers and at least the first leaf. The almanac features the following content: eclipses, seasons, and tide tables; rates of postage; "The Anatomy of Man's Body" according to "The Twelve Constellations"; moon phases, high, tide, etc. for each month; and a "Chronicle of Events" in Connecticut from 1 July 1866 to 1 July 1867, comprised mainly of death announcements. Single vol. (7.25" by 4.5").
