Description
New-York: V.G. Audubon, 1856. Very Good. New-York: V.G. Audubon, 1856. Second Edition. Three volumes; large octavos (27.5cm); publisher's full blind-tooled brown morocco, gilt-lettered spines in six compartments, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers; a hundred and fifty-five (155) hand-colored plates lithographed by J.T. Bowen, collated complete. Leather a bit scuffed and scratched, especially along spines, some rubbing to joints, spines uniformly darkened, scattered foxing to textblocks and plates, else a Very Good set. Contemporary ownership ex libris of R.E. Carr to front pastedowns of Vols II and III. Splendid example of the late collaboration between American ornithologist John James Audubon (1785-1851) and his friend and associate the Reverend John Bachman (1790-1874)--indeed, Audubon's two sons were married to Bachman's two daughters. Though Audubon, already a cause célèbre for his monumental "Birds of America" was awarded lead billing on the title page, Bachman wrote and edited the majority of the text.

Description
[Dawson City, 1901. Very good.. Five photographs, each measuring 11 x 14 inches, forming an 11 x 70 inch panoramic view of Dawson City. Each photograph with different gradations of toning (the central panel with excellent contrast, the rest with varying degrees of fading), minor wear. A substantial turn-of-the-century panoramic photograph of Dawson City, in five sheets, viewed from the west side of the Yukon River. The photograph was produced by H.J. Goetzman, who worked as a commercial photographer in the Yukon from 1897 until 1904, recording the scenery, life and activity of the route to the gold fields through Alaska and Canada, Dyea, the Chilkoot Trail, White Pass Canyon, Bennett, Dawson, and the Klondike gold fields. He ran Goetzman's Photographic Studio in Dawson from 1898 to 1904. The Yukon Archives holds another example of this set, and their catalog record offers the following details on the content: "The panorama stretches from north of Dawson to south of the Klondike River. Many streets, buildings, houses, freight sheds, piles of wood, rafts, boats, and sternwheelers are visible. The Yukon River appears to be low. Photograph #1 (beginning at the right) includes the Territorial Administration building, North-West Mounted Police compound, Front Street, Commissioner's Residence, Territorial Court House, Klondike River, and Klondike City; Photograph #2 includes Boyle's Wharf, Front Street, and the Fair View Hotel. A road leading up the hill is visible in the background; Photograph #3 includes White Pass & Yukon freight sheds, ferry tower, Simpson's Hotel, Aurora Hotel, Mechanics Emporium Block building, N.C. Co. [Northern Commercial Company] shed, Hotel McDonald on Second Avenue, Palmer Bros., and Bartlett Bros; Photograph #4 includes the sternwheeler 'Will H. Isom', sternwheeler 'Sarah', Ladue Co. freight shed and building, N.C. Co. building and freight shed, N.A.T. & T. Co. [North American Transportation & Trading Company] freight shed, White Pass freight shed, and Yukon Saw Mill Co.; Photograph #5 includes the Moosehide Slide and N.C. Co. buildings. An impressive, highly detailed view of Dawson City just after its transformation by the burst of commercial activity brought by the Klondike Gold Rush.

A rare collectible.
