Description
London: n.p., 1689. FIRST EDITION. Modern bonded leather; title page trimmed or repaired at top. Note in pen at bottom of title indicating the name of the author and dated 1695, engraved label of Samuel Hirst, watchmaker of Leeds, pasted on verso of title, his ownership inscription to title. First edition. The first of two parts treats the meaning and significance of dreams, initially dealing with the nature of sleep (including those who walk and talk therein), the causes of dreams specified, the meanings of certain types of dreams and how people communicate with angels through dreaming. The second part is an appendix “shewing the cause of madness, and several observables relating thereunto.” He makes an analogy between dreams and madness, and thereby approaches a description of psychosis. In this period, physicians still held strongly to the concepts of humors and religious beliefs, yet the text definitely indicates a more modern understanding of and respect for people suffering from mental illness. Tryon talks about the pointlessness of drugging people with “stupifying medicines” and also cautions against “too much company, prating, and especially the Teazing of such distermpered People with unnecessary Questions.” He mentions “New Bethlam” hospital, and begs the governors of the hospital to “restrain their inferior officers from admitting such swarms of people of all ages and degrees, for only a little paltry profit to come in there, and with their noise and vain questions to disturb the poor souls.” Tryon (1634-1703), an English merchant, was self-taught in medicine and astrology. He wrote a number of popular self-help books, as well as works on slavery, education, and temperance. He was convinced that pacifism and benevolence to animals were keys in leading a spiritual and long life. His devotion to vegetarianism and abstinence from alcohol and tobacco were taken up by many of his readers; in addition to his influence of Franklin, Lewis Gompertz, founder of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, counts himself as a follower. Description
Beckenham: The Chimæra Press, 1986 Illustrated with six original lithographs by Charles Keeping. Limited first edition. One of 100 numbered copies signed by Keeping, this being number 51. Publisher's quarter vellum, with gray, red, and black marbled paper-covered boards, back to back stories (dos-à-dos) with two title pages, book bound by Paul Cook, spine lettered in black, and fore edge untrimmed; housed in publisher's gray slipcase. Fine book, with just a hint of toning to spine; about fine slipcase, with a faint area of soiling and a few very light scratches to rear panel. With a "Recent Press Books" review of the book laid in. Overall, a luxurious and haunting edition of two short stories from the 19th century American master of horror. This fine press book contains two macabre short stories by Edgar Allan Poe: "The Facts in the Case of Monsieur Valdemar" and "The Story of Hop-Frog." In "Monsieur Valdemar," the narrator conducts an experiment on a man dying of tuberculosis, mesmerizing (an early form of hypnosis) him shortly before his impending death. The man is kept in a trance-like state, somewhere between life and death, for months, until the trance is broken and his body rapidly decays. The story was first published simultaneously in Broadway Journal and American Review: A Whig Journal in December of 1845 without any statement that it was fiction, which led many readers to believe that it was a retelling of a true event. In "The Story of Hop-Frog," the title character is a dwarf and jester for a cruel and joke-loving king. When the king abuses Hop-Frog's friend, a young girl named Trippetta, Hop-Frog plots a fiery revenge against the king and his seven loyal ministers. "Hop-Frog" was first published in 1849 in The Flag of Our Union newspaper, and it has been suggested that the story was Poe's way of taking revenge against his literary critics. . Signed by Illustrator. Limited First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine. Illus. by Charles Keeping.

Rochester, New York: University of Rochester Press, 2020-01-02. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/No Jacket - Pictorial Cover. 6x0x9. First edition. An exceptional copy. ix, [1], 236 pp. Extensive notes, bibliography, and index follow text. Reframes the story of modern Ethiopia around the contributions of the Oromo people and the culturally fluid union of communities that shaped the nation's politics and society. Although the Oromo are the largest ethnic group in Ethiopia, their history has been distorted in order to buttress twentieth-century notions of a homogeneous Ethiopian state. The Other Abyssinians tells the story of the Oromo people's contribution to modern Ethiopia, tracing their experiences from the early nineteenth century onward and detailing the varied interactions of Oromo groups throughout the Ethiopian highlands. Focusing on the historic provinces of Wällo and Shäwa, this well-researched work elucidates the importance of these territories in the creation of Ethiopia and the history of the Oromo. It casts the Oromo as Abyssinians and central in all aspects of modernEthiopian life, while making a case for Ethiopia, a nation without a colonial legacy, as an example of indigenous African identity formation that challenges notions of "tribal" or ethnic identities. Author Brian J. Yates details the cultural practices that integrated the populations of the highlands into the Abyssinian group; in addition, he analyzes the political structures that evolved concurrently. The book, notably, utilizes a community-based framework to underscore the fluidity of modern national identity. All in all, the work offers a close study of Ethiopian modernization policies and illuminates how Africans might have crafted their nations without the legaciesof colonialism.
