Description
2009. [N. P.]: The William Blake Trust, 2009. Folio, 95pp. Original black silk binding, with morocco labels, stamped in gilt, to top board and backstrip, black cloth-covered slipcase; illustrated throughout with color reproductions of watercolor drawings, as well as engravings. As new. § First edition, limited to 186 copies, out of print on publication. From the announcement: "These watercolor designs, which disappeared from the public eye from 1836-2001, came to light in a Glasgow bookshop, and were [later] offered as an entity to institutions and collectors at a price which, as it turned out, none could afford, or at least, was prepared to pay. Eventually, in the face of much protest, the portfolio and the 19 designs were offered for sale in 20 separate lots at Sotheby's, New York, in 2006. The drawings are now widely dispersed and it is most unlikely that they will ever again be seen together." The sale was roundly condemned at the time as an act of cultural crime. This book (and the facsimile portfolio in the de luxe issue) are now the only record we will ever have of the original series. Happily, the Blake Trust created a superb book, which is and will surely remain the single most valuable reference work on these remarkable Blake drawings.

Description
Florence, Italy: Appresso Giuseppe Allegrini. Very Good+. 1773. Hardcover. A series of portraits of illustrious Tuscan men with historical histories of the same ... measuring 18 x 14 1/2 inches in contemporary (original) 18th Century patterned paper boards and half parchment binding which is severely damaged and stained with heavy loss at the top of the spine. The contents also show damage including old dampstaining throughout, which is at times heavy in the inner hinges and upper margins but which fortunately affects only 4 or 5 of the 52 glorious copper engraved portraits. A handsome production with defects but would serve well for reading or research. .

Description
Folio, 3 page manuscript poem, no doubt composed in 1841 on the 20th anniversary of the poet's marriage to Priscilla Maden Wiffen. "Twenty chequered years have past, / Summer suns and wintry weather, / Since, our lot in concert cast, / First we 'climbed the hill, together'...." Watts heads his poem with a quote from Milton: "The world was all before us, where to choose our place of rest and Providence our guide." The poem was included in "Heath's Book of Beauty" 1847 and reprinted (with some differences from our manuscript) in Watts's "Lyrics of the Heart" (1851).

Green boards. Very good
Description
Nashville, Tenn.: Printed for the Author - Publishing House of the M. E. Church, South, 1922. Revised Edition. Hardcover. Green boards. Very good. 267 pages. 19.5 x 13 cm. Originally published in 1904, this revised edition contains a broad range of recipes typical of early 1900s southern tables, including items like shad roe croquettes, creamed tripe, sweatbread patties, hog's head cheese, pig's feet, chestnut stuffing, turnip greens with hog jowl, hoe cakes, and Tennessee eggnog. This type of regional food writing illustrates local practices like using sorghum as a sweetener and identifying dishes influenced by the rural, agrarian culture. The former owner of this book took the time to annotate some of the recipes - such as adding her own method to the Raisin Wine recipe and noting which recipes were "fine" or "excellent". Previous owner's bookplate on verso of front cover: "Ex Libris Christine Tate". Interior soiled throughout, not affecting text. Covers very lightly soiled.

Description
[np, 1930. Oblong 16mo, original illustrated wrappers, 8pp. Near Fine. A common theme for these Bibles: respectable married man tells a young woman he wants to "buy a little of your kiester if we could get it over before my wife comes back from the store." The activities progress in graphic detail. Tijuana Bibles "were produced by a shadowy criminal underground in the 1930s. Very little hard information is available about how the Bibles were created, where they were manufactured, and how they were distributed. One certain fact, confirmed by numerous anecdotes, is that these comic books were for many young men their first peek into the forbidden world of erotic intimacy" [Adelman]. They were crudely printed and illustrated porn tract-comic books. The skimpy stories featured contemporary movie, sports, folk, political and cartoon characters in absurdly hyperbolic sexual relations. Why they're called Tijuana Bibles is a matter of speculation; 'Tijuana' was typically associated with iniquity and as an outlet for behavior considered impermissible elsewhere. Properly considered the ancestor of America's underground comics, Tijuana Bibles declined in popularity in the 1960's as mainstream publications like Playboy would satisfy readers' prurient interests. Adelman, Tijuana Bibles. Art and Wit in America's Forbidden Funnies. 1930s-1950s. [1997].
