Vera Lachmann (1901-1985) was a German poet, translator, and scholar who made significant contributions to literature, particularly in the areas of poetry, translation, and classical studies Lachmann's poetry was notable for its focus on classical themes, and she often explored human existence, identity, and the tension between modern life and ancient traditions. She was also a key figure in the German resistance during the Nazi era, which further adds to the depth of her literary and personal legacy. Her work is significant for its intellectual rigor, blending her classical scholarship with poetic sensitivity. Lachmann's translations of Greek poetry and philosophy helped bridge the gap between ancient and modern cultures, bringing timeless ideas into contemporary discourse. Ben Raeburn was a book publisher and editor known for his work in the mid-20th century, with a focus on poetry and literary fiction. He was the owner and publisher of Horizon Press, an independent publishing house based in New York, from 1951 to 1984. Prior to establishing Horizon Press, Raeburn worked as the office manager for Falstaff Press, a company owned by his aunt and uncle. As an editor, Raeburn helped bring several important works to the public and was associated with producing high-quality, often beautifully bound editions of books. His contributions to the publishing world helped shape the literary landscape of his time, particularly in the realms of poetry and creative writing. Though not as widely remembered today as some other figures in publishing, Raeburn's efforts had a lasting impact on the books he worked on and the authors he supported.

DAVID STARR JORDAN (1851 - 1931) was inspired by Louis Agassiz to pursue his studies in ichthyology. He was part of the first freshman class of undergraduates at Cornell University and graduated in 1872 with a master's degree in botany. Jordan initially taught natural history courses at several small Midwestern colleges and secondary schools, including at Indianapolis High School. While in Indianapolis, Jordan obtained a Doctor of Medicine degree from Indiana Medical College in 1875. The following year, in 1876, Jordan taught comparative anatomy at the college. He was then accepted into the natural history faculty of Indiana University Bloomington as a professor of zoology in 1879. He was named President of Indiana University in 1885, becoming the nation's youngest university president at age 34 and the first Indiana University president that was not an ordained minister. In March 1891, he was approached by Leland and Jane Stanford, who offered him the presidency of their about-to-open California university, Leland Stanford Junior University. He served Stanford as president until 1913 and then chancellor until his retirement in 1916. In 1899, Jordan delivered an essay at Stanford on behalf of racial segregation and racial purity. One of Jordan's main theses in the essay was that his goals for an ideal society are better engendered by peace than war. His argument against warfare contended that it is detrimental because it removes the strongest men from the gene pool. In 1902, the essay was published by the American Unitarian Association under the title of "The Blood of the Nation". In 1928 Jordan served on the initial board of trustees of the Human Betterment Foundation, a eugenics organization that advocated compulsory sterilization legislation in the United States. In retirement, Jordan remained active, writing on ichthyology, world relations, peace, and his autobiography. In addition to his many professional publications, Jordan wrote poetry, children's books, and texts on religious themes, including The Story of the Innumerable Company, 1895, reissued as The Wandering Host, 1904 (offered here). This is an allegorical tale about the search for spiritual meaning, in an edition with artwork reminiscent of the "Arts and Crafts" style originated by William Morris.
