Description
Paris: Gallimard, 1942. First edition. Original wrappers, fine, unopened. One of 58 numbered copies on vélin (second paper, after 21 on Mûrier d'Annam). Gallimard had been given approval to print 2,100 copies of Saint Exupéry's account of his reconnaissance flights during the Battle of France in 1940. When it appeared in November 1942 "the scandal broke. The collaborationist press went wild....Vichy did not wait for the press campaign to develop: at the first 'denunciations' by anonymous Frenchmen protesting the antinational character of the work, Gallimard was asked to recall all the copies that had been distributed" Assouline, Gaston Gallimard, p. 270. The recall was particularly effective and very few copies of the Gallimard edition survived. It was replaced by an edition of 500 printed in New York, and then by a series of clandestine mimeographed printings.

Description
Nashville, Tennessee: Geo. H. Anderson, 1923. Good. Three black and white photographs, each measuring 8" x 10" on card mounts measuring 11 ½" x 13 ½". Photos very good with a few minor surface abrasions and one small stain in the background of one photo; mounts good with moderate wear, chipping and a bit wavy. This is a group of three spectacular photographs by a prolific Black photographer in Nashville which showcases Meharry Medical College's [MMC] pharmacy school graduating class of 1923, as well as the members of its Phi Beta Sigma chapter. MMC was the first medical school for African Americans in the South when it was founded in 1876 as the Medical Department of Central Tennessee College. The school was chartered separately in 1915 and in the early 21st century became the largest HBCU devoted solely to educating scientists and healthcare professionals. The 1923 graduating class was Meharry's largest to that point with 198 degrees conferred and 20 of them going to women. While we cannot locate the names of the graduating students, thanks to contemporary news accounts, we know the students shown here are from the School of Pharmacy, and two of those graduates are women. The other photo shows the men of the Meharry's Beta Phi Sigma chapter, a group that is still active today. The year 1923 was very important to Meharry as it received an "A" rating from the American Medical Association after [years of struggling?. According to the University of Richmond's History Engine website, the AMA adopted standards for medical education in 1904 that made it nearly impossible for African American schools to obtain an A rating: school like Meharry could not cover the increased cost of operation while complying with new standards. By 1923, the AMA's grading system rendered all but two African American medical schools unsatisfactory, but Meharry managed to receive its A rating that year, in part due to a donation from the Carnegie foundation. The AMA accreditation was announced at graduation and was met with a five minute standing ovation. The African American photographer, George H. Anderson, was prolific and well known in Nashville. Anderson's credit is seen in publications from Tennessee Agricultural and Industrial State Teachers College and he had a studio located at 417 Cedar Street (now Charlotte Avenue) in the heart of the African American downtown business district in Nashville from 1912 to 1951. Wonderful images of students at Meharryby an important Black photographer and taken in a critical year for the school's accredidation. Google and OCLC searches reveal nothing similar.

Very good.
Description
Coyoteville: September 12, 1855. Very good.. [2]pp., plus integral blank. Original mailing folds, moderate toning, staining, and ink spotting, but still easily readable. Bottom fourth of integral blank excised. An informative Gold Rush letter about mining in the long-vanished ghost town of Coyoteville, which was an extraordinarily rich gold area for a couple of years in the early 1850s. A noted tunneling method, nicknamed "coyoteing" was developed in the town, and subsequently inspired the name of the town. In the present letter, Moses Pine writes to "Catherine" in Branch County, Michigan, and signs his name simply as "Mose Esq" at the conclusion. The author informs Catherine, presumably his wife or sister, of his activities, some of the economic realities, and some of the practical details of prospecting for gold in California. Presuming that "it would be impossible for the whole of Branch County to raise $10 unless they sell a horse," Pine comments that he had ginger bread on the Fourth of July after working all day and yielding a "half Ounce Gold Dust." He then provides a detailed description of his mining: "I am now tunneling in a hill. We are 150 feet under the ground. Day before yesterday we got small respect 25 cents to the pan for the first and the bed rock pitching. I think we will find good pay in the going 100 feet further the expense is heavy as we have to blast and timber the tunnel." Pine also talks of his health and that "I work hard every day do my cooking and baking." He then expresses his hope to get back to Michigan to "rest a few months," but knows nothing of other Michigan folks in California: "Have not seen nor heard anything of them in a year. I guess they have all gone home with a fortune in a horn. Well good luck to the lucky. Old Mose will come home after a while with a pretty hat on." A nicely-detailed letter from an unusual and obscure Gold Rush location.

The diaries were kept in a legible hand and are written in ink. Each page of the diary is two days, with about ¾ of the days filled in. The amount of days where entries were filled in are as follows: 1908 - 233 entries; 1909 - 275 entries; 1910 - 293 entries; 1911 - 319 entries; 1912 - 291 entries; 1913 - 250 entries ; 1914 - 287 entries; 1915 - 285 entries, for a total of 2233 entries out of a possible 2922, or 76% of the diaries are completed. Most of the entries have to do with his legal profession, discussing such matters as court cases, divorces, deeds and mortgages, guardianships, slander, bankruptcies, marriage applications, estate settlements, etc. There are however numerous personal entries as well. John W. McDowell was the son of James W. and Nancy J. (Rea) McDowell. He was born in Washington, Pennsylvania, November 22, 1875. His father, James, was born in 1842, and was a graduate of Washington and Jefferson College (Class of 1866). The senior McDowell was admitted to the bar and practiced as an attorney for the rest of his life, his son John becoming the junior partner of the firm upon completing college. John W. McDowell's early education took place in the local grammar schools. He covered his preliminary course at the preparatory department of Washington and Jefferson College, than entered the classical department of the same institution, from which he was graduated in the class of 1896, with the degree of Bachelor of Arts. Reading law with his father, McDowell was admitted to the bar in 1900, later, also like his father, being admitted to both the Superior and Supreme Courts of the State. He stood among the prominent men of the day in the profession, and was a member of the Pennsylvania State Bar Association and the Washington County Bar Association. Politically, he was associated with the Democratic Party and served in various local municipal offices. Fraternally, John W. McDowell held memberships in the Washington Lodge, No. 164, Free and Accepted Masons and in Jacques de Molay Commandery, Knights Templar. He was a charter member of the exclusive Bassett Club of Washington, as well as an avid golfer, holding a membership to the Washington County Golf and Country Club.On October 15, 1908, McDowell married Margaret Junk (1875-1948), daughter of James Junk (1841-1903) and Louisa Wells (1840-1913), of Fayette County, Pennsylvania, both families were early settlers of the Brownsville District of that county. Margaret was a graduate of Washington Seminary, active in civic affairs and welfare work, and a director of the Young Women's Christian Association and a member of the Current Events Club. Together the McDowell's had one daughter, Nancy Louise McDowell. They made their home in East Washington.

1910. With Illustrations by Frank Craig. London: Macmillan and Co., 1910. 2+8 pp undated ads. Original red cloth with ganesha device in gilt. First Edition of this collection of tales and poems that form a continuation of the Puck stories begun in PUCK OF POOK'S HILL (1906). Included are four plates by Frank Craig; in later editions these were replaced with twelve illustrations by Charles Brock. REWARDS AND FAIRIES contains the first appearance in book form of the famous poem "If", which starts off If you can keep your head when all about you | Are losing theirs and blaming it on you; ... (Because of this poem's position in this book, at the end of the tale "Brother Square-Toes" which includes George Washington as a character, many thought that "If" referred to him; in fact, Kipling later asserted, he had in mind L. Starr Jameson, leader of the Jameson Raid in the Transvaal in 1895.) This is a near-fine copy (light rubbing of the front cover medallion, minor foxing on pages toward each end of the book, slight fading of the red spine as usual). Loosely inserted is Macmillan's Autumn 1910 leaflet for New Books; at the bottom of the front free endpaper is the discreet inkstamp of the original bookseller, H. & C. Treacher of Brighton. Richards A242; Stewart 329.
