Very Good +
Description
Moscow & Leningrad, 1925. First edition. Very Good +. Original pictorial wrappers stapled at spine. Light rubbing to rear wrap. Internally tight and overall clean, spine reinforced, and small paper repairs to the front and rear wrappers, and to the margins of pages 10 and 12 not affecting text. This rare work in Russian has appeared only six times at auction, the most recent being in 2008. Rand's first published work, which was produced in Russia under the name A. Rosenbaum, "this monograph was part of a series about movie stars, which included booklets on Mary Pickford and Max Linder. Rand's examination of the 'atypical' Negri, with her 'mysterious contemptuous smile'--a trait found in nearly all of Rand's protagonists -- celebrates the actress's screen persona as 'the strong, powerful woman,' the 'proud woman-conqueror...[who is] powerful even in her suffering.' Rand sounds familiar themes in extolling Negri's concentration of 'her whole life...in her artistic endeavors.' As the embodiment of 'power, the eternal, unconquerable power of a woman,' Negri 'portrays the woman victorious.' For the young Rand, the actress seems to have encapsulated a nascent feminist ideal, one that would reappear in Kira Arounova of We the Living and Dagny Taggart of Atlas Shrugged" (Sciabarra). In this sense, Pola Negri was more than Rand's first appearance in print. The book was the space where she located and developed the model for the most influential characters to appear in her later works. Swann lot 259 (sale 1929). Provenance: From the private collection of Jay T. Snider. Very Good +.

Description
[Monmouthshire]: The Old Stile Press, 2004. Limited Edition. Leather. Fine. Cour, Glenys. No. 195 of 225 copies, folio size, 56 pp., signed by Gwen Watkins, Glenys Cour, and Paul Delrue. This copy in a custom binding done in 2014 by Paul Delrue (b. 1944). Paul bound his first book at the age of 15 in 1959, and knew he had discovered his calling. He became an apprentice at the University College, London from 1961–64 and worked there as a binder until 1971, when he set up his own bindery. In 1981 was elected a Fellow of the Society of Bookbinders, having founded and served as chairman of the Chester and North Wales branch in 1979. Paul has earned numerous awards and honours, including the Silver medal and three other awards in 1991 in The Bookbinding Competition. He was elected a Fellow of Designer Bookbinders in the same year; the following year he was awarded two Bronze medals in the prestigious Prix Paul Bonet. Paul invented the lacunose style of binding which he has taught to other binders, although he uses other methods as well. His work is highly prized and springs from within him; as he writes on his web site, "A book and its binding are inextricably linked – the one complements the other in a way which creates something more than just a book with an attractive cover. My design bindings draw on what a book says to me and how it inspires me emotionally". Glenys Cour who, with her sculptor husband, Ronald, was part of the famous group in Swansea that included Vernon Watkins and his close friend Dylan Thomas. Her richly powerful collage images help to make a journey through this large format book an extraordinary experience. She is, still today, a near neighbour in Swansea of Gwen Watkins who has given so much kind encouragement to the project and, in the Afterword, has written compellingly about her husband's life and work (N.B., info on artist from website of the Old Stile Press). ___DESCRIPTION: Custom binding in full leathers of blue, grey, black and tan, inlaid and embossed, the title of the work on the front with a seagull flying across a sun, the author on the back with the silhouette of a new moon, evoking thoughts of creation appropriate to the poem; Paul has used multiple and varying endpapers and flyleaves, ranging from a mottled grey, to black, blue and purple. The text was produced by the Old Stile Press, title page in blue and black, the images by Glenys Cour in black, text of the poem in blue; of the book, only 225 copies were printed, this being no. 195; the author of the Afterword and the Artist have both signed the colophon page; additionally, Paul Delrue as the binder for this copy has signed below with the date of 2014; the book is slightly oblong, the text block being just over 13" tall by 13 1/2" wide; unpaginated with 28 leaves; Omega type on Fabriano Tiziano. The book is protected by a custom box also made by Paul of blue linen cloth decorated simply but in a style which echoes the binding, gilt lettering on the front and spine, lined with natural linen. ___CONDITION: Both the book and the box are fine, as new; we acquired the book directly from the binder, it is pristine having come directly from his bindery. ___POSTAGE: Please note that due to the size and weight of this work additional postage may apply; we are happy to ship at cost to both domestic and international customers, please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Description
London: [Novasound and Scorpio Studios]. c1975. Original handwritten working manuscript lyrics for the title song from Entwistle's fourth solo album, 61 lines (complete), approximately 300 words in black ink with rewrite of the last stanza in blue ink, on 3pp (8 1/4” x 10 1/4"), rectos only, with deletions, corrections, changes, and additions. Three tiny chips and tears at blank edges, else near fine. Toned, with some chips to the edges. "Mad Dog" represents Entwistle's continued exploration of narrative songwriting outside The Who's collaborative framework, a fun 50s rock revival piece that tells of a love triangle that culminates in murder. The song appeared on Mad Dog (1975), an album distinguished more by its ensemble (including Joe Walsh, Graham Nash, and members of Faces and Humble Pie) than by its material, which marked a creative plateau in Entwistle's solo career between the experimental ambition of earlier releases and later commercial attempts. The working manuscript documents his compositional process through visible revisions and the shift from black to blue ink for the final stanza's rewrite, preserving the iterative development of his darkly comic narrative voice.

American Mathematical Society / London Mathematical Society, 2001. Hardcover. Very good. Hardcover. 10 1/4" X 7 1/4". xvi, 347pp. Very mild shelf wear to covers, corners, and edges of paper over boards. Pages are clean and unmarked. Binding is sound. ABOUT THIS BOOK: This book contains essays on Ramanujan and his work , as well as important survey articles in areas influenced by Ramanujan's mathematics. Most of the articles in the book are nontechnical, but even those that are more technical contain substantial sections that will engage the general reader. The book opens with the only four existing photographs of Ramanujan, presenting historical accounts and information about other people in the photos. This section includes an account of a cryptic family history written by his younger brother, S. Lakshmi Narasimhan. Following are articles on Ramanujan's illness by R. A. Rankin, the British physician D. A. B. Young, and Nobel laureate S. Chandrasekhar. They present a study of his symptoms, a convincing diagnosis of the cause of his death, and a thorough exposition of Ramanujan's life as a patient in English sanitariums and nursing homes. Following this are biographies of S. Janaki (Mrs. Ramanujan) and S. Narayana Iyer, Chief Accountant of the Madras Port Trust Office, who first communicated Ramanujan's work to the Journal of the Indian Mathematical Society. The last half of the book begins with a section on "Ramanujan's Manuscripts and Notebooks". Included is an important article by G. E. Andrews on Ramanujan's lost notebook.(Publisher).
