Description
JOHN STEINBECK (1902-1968). An American writer, Steinbeck is best remembered for The Grapes Of Wrath, East Of Eden, Of Mice And Men, Cannery Row and Travels With Charley.DS. 1pg. September 27, 1941. California. A partly printed legal document signed John Steinbeck at the conclusion. Steinbeck appointed the attorney Webster Street to demand, sue for, collection and receive all such sums of money, debts, dues, accounts, legacies, bequests, interests, dividends, annuities, and demands whatsoever, as are now or shall hereafter become due, owing, payable and belonging to me. Webster Street of Monterey was a lawyer of the crew; he was a partner in the law practice of Hudson, Martin and Ferrante. He also was a member of the fabled crew of the Western Flyer, the fishing boat that took Steinbeck and Ed Ricketts on their 1940 voyage to the Sea of Cortez (Street left the ship at San Diego to get back to work). There are rubber stamps on the verso indicating that this power of attorney was filed in Monterey County on October 1, 1941. The document has the usual filing folds but is in fine condition.

William Scoresby, a multi-talented individual, was a commercial whaler, a scientist, and ultimately a religious cleric. In his commercial whaling endeavors, he set the pace for the British exploration of polar regions. In the 1822 whaling expedition to Greenland and Baffin Bay, he mapped about 400 miles of uncharted Greenland coast. The account is intended as a scientific report, describing weather conditions, optical illusions caused by ice and raking light, and Inuit dwellings and burials. In appendix is a list of rock specimens by W.Jameson, an annotated list of 45 species of plants by Sir W.J.Hooker, a list of animals, a meteorological table and extracts from the journals of other whalers.

Description
London: Printed for John Stockdale, 1788 First edition of Pye's translation of Aristotle's Poetics. This translation was revised and corrected and appended to Pye's A Commentary Illustrating the Poetic of Aristotle (1792), a work which is "valuable in the history of aesthetics and literary theory for its sensible and pertinent applications of Aristotle's theory to English writers from Shakespeare to Sterne" (John Valdimir Price). This first edition of his translation is far scarcer than Pye's Commentary…; ESTC lists only five copies in America. Slightly later full calf. Covers decoratively ruled in blind, spine decoratively stamped in gilt, with leather label. Marbled edges. . Small octavo. Engraved title-page. Errata slip pasted on last page of ads. Spine faded, occasional foxing, front hinge starting to crack. Overall a good, clean copy. Pye (1745-1813), a country gentleman and Member of Parliament from Berkshire with degrees from Magdalen College, Oxford, was the author of numerous poems and plays, the best known of which is his epic poem in six books, Alfred (1801). He succeeded Thomas Warton as poet laureate in 1790, and held the office for twenty-three years, dutifully producing yearly odes on the king's birthday and numerous patriotic pieces. Though his poetry is little read today, his translations and commentary have endured more successfully.

Description
Mexico: Imprenta Dirigida por Tomas Uribe y Alcalde, 1833. Very good.. 23,[1]pp. Small quarto. Removed from a sammelband. Minor wear and soiling. Light toning. This "Secret Report to the Sovereign People," which the author claims to have found in a mailbox, "Between ten and eleven last Wednesday night," was in fact written by Miguel Santa Maria, a liberal republican politician who had been a supporter of and minister under Bolivar in South America and was influential in the Mexican government of Guadelupe Victoria. He was exiled to the United States but returned to Mexico in 1831, only to find himself em broiled in controversy because of this pamphlet. In this satirical work, Santa Maria attacks the conditions of the army, argues the benefits of dispensing with a military (avoiding the costs and the civil wars, e.g.), criticizes the Congress for their extravagant salaries (which are provided in detail), and likewise denounces the entire government of Manuel Gomez Pedraza (who lasted but three months). Santa Maria was exiled again for this outburst, this time by Santa Anna and Gomez Farias, who replaced Pedraza. Scarce, OCLC locates only four copies, at Berkeley, SMU, Yale, and the BNM.
