Description
1811. THE RIGHT OF A STATE to Grant Exclusive Privileges, in Roads, Bridges, Canals, Navigable Waters, &c. Vindicated.... New York: E. Conrad, 1811. 12mo. 4, [3], 6-44, 9 p. Stitched in blue paper wrappers, as issued. Three leaves considerably foxed, else a lovely, as-illsued copy. An anonymous defense of the exclusive privileges granted to Robert Fulton and Robert R. Livingston to operate a steamboat on New York waters. The work reviews, in considerable detail, the history of exclusive navigation rights, beginning with the grant to John Fitch in 1787 and continuing to the date of publication. Over the next several years Fulton and Livingston's rivals, particularly Aaron Ogden and Daniel Dod, would continue to challenge the New York monopoly, which eventually would be struck down in the landmark United States Supreme Court decision Gibbons v. Ogden. S&S 23819; Rink 4018.

Description
[New York], 1972. Like New. Signed. Original typed postcard dated 23 April 1972, signed in blue ink by Isaac Asimov. Also included is a carbon of the response to Asimov. Asimov is addressing the active California fan Rick Sneary, who was apparently trying to get Asimov to either attend a Con or donate a manuscript to the benefit auction. Asimov replies "Impossible for me to be there, as you've guessed. Also, alas, impossible for me to contribute anything to the auction. Everything conceivable--down to first draft, and scribbled notes--goes to Boston University. In fact, your letter will go there and your request will be immortalized and my curator will send me an anxious letter reminding me that nothing must go anywhere else." Sneary's response is good humored and he notes that Asimov's rejection note will be donated to the auction, and suggests that his curator should come out and bid for it. Both the original Asimov and the carbon Sneary are in fine condition.
