Description
15 folding leaves. 8vo (290 x 2000 mm.), orig. yellow semi-stiff wrappers (wrappers a little soiled), new stitching. [Japan: late Edo]. Morning glories, first brought into Japan by the Chinese, were originally used for medicinal purposes, as a laxative. But soon the Japanese cultivated them as ornamental flowers. During the Edo period, morning glories became very popular and the subject of aesthetic admiration. Much like the “tulip mania” in 17th-century Holland, Japan experienced several morning glory booms in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Japanese horticulturalists have been the leaders in cross-breeding the flowers to develop new varieties. The anonymous artist who executed the skilled drawings in this album has depicted many varieties of the morning glory flower in great detail, painted in rich colors. The artist has labelled each flower with its name (and alternate names) and a brief description. The artist has frequently used ground-shell white pigment to give the paintings a three-dimensional quality. Fine and fresh copy, preserved in an old chitsu. Minor marginal worming. With several ownership seals. One of them is that of Manabu Miyoshi (1861-1931), who earned his doctorate in botany at the University of Leipzig, and returned to Japan to become professor of that subject at the University of Tokyo. Another seal is that of Kanesaburo Wakai (d. 1908), a prominent dealer in Japanese antiquities and art.

Description
Illus. throughout. 219 pp. & colophon. 4to, pictorial softcover. Prague: National Gallery Prague, 2018. The rare English edition of this amply illustrated monograph on Valoch (b. 1946). The book comprehensively details his substantial contributions to Czech art from the 60s to 80s, as well as the formation of his important archive of Eastern European avant-garde art. From p. 11: “Valoch and his activities in the artistic realm may serve as the basis for the evaluation of the development of Czech, Slovak, and partially also European art scene from the middle of the 1960s. Analyzing Valoch’s activities will gradually unveil a system created by a very active artist and curator, we might call it networking in current terms… “Valoch’s work as an artist was inseparably connected with his activities as a curator and theoretician from the beginning of his active presence in the artistic world. The following characterization generally applies to Valoch as an artist as well as a poet, curator, critic, musician, theoretician, collector, or pedagogue – in Valoch’s personality these activities often blend. Valoch’s world is the reflection of language, its visual, semantical, and relational linkage. He is primarily interested in work which uses the language of geometry, Visual and Conceptual Poetry in a manifold way, i.e. Graphical Music or Phonic Poetry, conceptual and post-conceptual photography, installations (textual and intervention), and landscape events and interventions…” In fine condition. Description
Leuven, 1836. Beneden, Pierre-Joseph van (1809-94). Cours de zoologie et d'anatomie comparée. Unpublished manuscript notebook in the hand of Beneden's student Amand Proost. 530, [64], [86], [34]pp. (irregularly numbered; last 184 pages unnumbered), plus a few inserted leaves. Louvain [Leuven], 1836-39. 192 x 161 mm. Quarter cloth, marbled boards ca. 1836, rubbed, some edgewear, tear in lower portion of spine, one leaf loose. Small piece torn from margin of pp. 77/78 with slight loss of text, edges a bit frayed, but overall good to very good. 20th century bookplate of M. A Schockaert on rear free endpaper. Remarkably long and detailed student notebook documenting some of the first zoology and comparative anatomy courses taught by Pierre-Joseph van Beneden, a distinguished Belgian zoologist and paleontologist who made significant contributions to the biological sciences. The notebook provides unique insight into Beneden's approach to natural history at the beginning of his career, when he had published only a handful of scientific papers. It also sheds light on the methods used for teaching the sciences in mid-19th-century Europe. Beneden earned a medical degree at the state university in Leuven (Belgium) and studied zoology under Georges Cuvier in Paris. In 1836 he was appointed professor of zoology at Leuven's newly founded Catholic University, where he remained until his death in 1894. He is best known for his extensive work in the field of parasitology, including his introduction of two key biological/ecological concepts: Commensalism, describing a relationship between two organisms of different species in which one organism benefits from the other without the other being affected (e.g., remoras and sharks), and mutualism, describing a relationship in which two organisms of different species each benefit from the other (e.g., flowering plants and pollinating insects). These concepts are presented in the 1875 edition of Beneden's Mémoire sur les vers intestinaux, originally published in 1858 (see Garrison-Morton.com 10278). Beneden also published important works on fossil and living cetaceans (see Garrison-Morton.com 10291 and 10292), and in 1843 established one of the world's first marine laboratories. The notebook we are offering contains extensive and well-organized lecture notes-several illustrated with marginal drawings-taken by one of Beneden's students, Amand Proost, during Beneden's first courses on zoology and comparative anatomy at the Catholic University of Leuven (Proost, a candidate for a degree in the sciences in 1838, later taught at Antwerp's Athenée Royal, a secondary school). The first 530 pages of Proost's notebook, which are numbered, cover Beneden's lectures on zoology delivered between October 1836 and February 1837. These pages are divided into seven sections, as follows (the taxonomic terms are Cuvier's): Pages 1-104: Introduction and general anatomy Pages 105-98: Orders of "bimanes" (humans), "quadrumanes" (primates), "cheiroptères" (bats), "carnassiers" (carnivores that hunt live prey), and "rongeurs" (rodents) Pages 199-277: Orders of "edentés" (edentata; obs. for xenarthra, the order containing anteaters, sloths and armadillos), "pachydermes," "ruminants," "cétacés" (cetaceans), "marsupiaux" (marsupials) and "monotrèmes" Pages 283-374: Ornithology; natural history of birds Pages 287-382: Herpetology and ichthyology Pages 383-455: Invertebrates Pages 455-530: Entomology; natural history of insects The remaining 184 pages, unnumbered, cover Beneden's course on comparative anatomy ("Cours d'anatomie comparée") that began in the spring of 1839. The first 64 pages are devoted to Beneden's lecture of April 14 ("No. 1"), the following 88 pages to his lecture of May 8 ("No. 2"), and the final 34 pages ("Cahier supplémentaire") contains supplementary notes on various topics in zoology and anatomy, including remarks on the skin, sense organs, reproductive organs, animal behavior and geographical distribution. .

Description
13 measures in piano-vocal score for "Julia" (a soprano, the young Vestal Virgin) and "Clavecin" boldly notated in dark black ink. Titled at head "Prière de la Vestale de Spontini," marked "Andante espressivo" at head, and signed and dated at conclusion "Berlin, de 22 avril 1837 Spontini." With text commencing "O des infortunés, déesse tutélaire," the prayer from Act II of the opera. La Vestale, a tragédie lyrique in three acts to a libretto by Victor-Joseph-Etienne de Jouy, was first performed in Paris at the Opéra on 15 December 1807; it is regarded as Spontini's masterpiece, evidencing the influence of Gluck and anticipating the works of Berlioz, Wagner, and French Grand opera. "The opera, mostly composed in 1805 but repeatedly revised, was performed only after the intervention of the Empress Josephine. However, it turned out to be not only the most successful work of Spontini's unsteady career but also the one serious French opera to achieve lasting and international fame between 1789 and 1826. ... There are several extremely concise numbers in Gluck's manner, side by side with longer récitatifs obligés written in arioso style, and a preghiera by Julia in the second finale ('O des infortunées, déesse tutélaire'), with a soaring melodic line over an extremely sparse accompaniment which anticipates Italian opera of the 1830s. [Spontini] dominated serious grand opera of the early 19th century in Paris and later in Berlin. ... Although Fernand Cortez was taken out of the repertory in 1810, that year proved to be the peak of Spontini's career. In February he was appointed directeur de la musique de l'opéra buffa at the Théâtre de l'Impératrice and was able to put his ideas for repertory - concentrating on performances of Cimarosa and Mozart - into practice at the Théâtre Italien. In July he was awarded a newly created prize for the best opera of the decade, for La vestale, and in the same month he married Marie-Cathérine-Céleste Erard, daughter of the pianoforte maker and publisher Jean-Baptiste Erard. After Napoleon's fall from power Spontini withdrew from the public eye for some time, but he greeted the return of the Bourbon kings in August 1814 with Pélage and he was restored for a time to the position at the Théâtre Italien which he had given up in 1812."
