Description
First UK Edition (Originally published in Galaxy Science Fiction magazine); A Very Good book in a Very Good dust jacket. SIGNED, inscribed, and dated by the author with a unique inscription. An outstanding copy of this novel, the first recipient of the Hugo Award (1953), a publisher's sticker is affixed to the front flap announcing the award; the UK edition, with the Gerard Quinn illustration, much more uncommon in today's marketplace, particularly signed (as of this listing, the only signed UK copy available in the online market). This copy is in very good condition showing only mild foxing to the text block, a couple of small stains to the boards, and some light rubbing to the spine lettering. Housed in a crisp and bright very good or better dust jacket that shows some mild rubbing and chipping to the spine ends and corners, a few small tears, one to the spine, a tiny one to the front panel at the man's forehead, and one near the top of the front flap fold, and some minor dark soiling to the back panel. Overall, a highly presentable and collectible copy of this early award winning novel; Not remaindered, not price clipped, not ex-library; in a protective Mylar sleeve and will ship carefully wrapped in a sturdy box.

New. $95. * First American edition (first published in England 1698). This important work appeared fifteen years after Sidney's execution for treason in 1683. A reply to Filmer's Patriarcha, the Discourses is one of the earliest modern statements of republican ideals. He proposes a doctrine of natural justice and governmental order from which all institutions vary at their peril. More important, Sidney asserts that a king's authority is granted by parliament, which has the additional power to depose him, indeed a controversial idea during the Restoration period. Thomas Jefferson, one of several individuals influenced by this text, described it as "...probably the best elementary book of the principles of government, as founded in natural right which has ever been published in any language; and it is much to be desired in such a government as ours that it should be put into the hands of our youth as soon as their minds are sufficiently matured for that branch of study." (Sowerby). Sidney [1622-1683] was beheaded by Charles II in part for his involvement in the Rye House plot. One of the other charges against him was that he had committed treasonable libel in this work, which was still in manuscript at that time.
