A mixed-printing set: Volume I states "Twelfth Printing, March, 1934" on copyright page, Volumes II, IV, and VI with "1935" listed on title page, "1930" listed on Volume III, and "1933" with "Scribner's A" on Volume V. Solid text blocks with light shelf wear, internally fine. Housed in the publisher's navy blue cloth clamshell box, some splitting and frays to ribbon, title in gilt on top. An attractive example. Eugene Albert Puyou de Pouvourville, pseudonym Matgioi (1861 - 1939) was a French poet, translator, and orientalist. He spent most of his life in the Far East, particularly in China, where he would be initiated into a secret Chinese society, under the influence of a Taoist Master, where he acquired his pseudonym - literally translated as "Eye of the Day." He wrote numerous books on Chinese philosophy, ethnography, history, and traditional medicine, as well as fictitious works set in China, an example of which is the current book.
