Description
Various Book. Very Good. Soft cover. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. Amie Carey was devoted to drama from a young age. She attended West Morris Mendham High School in New Jersey, where she dedicated herself to the theatre department and soon headed west to pursue her acting career in earnest, earning a BA in acting from USC. She seemed to have all the right tools for success, yet was consistently just shy of a major break. Her marked-up early printings of scripts, many for films that became '90s classics (like My Best Friend's Wedding!), show a hardworking young actress studying for roles that could have changed her life. Though she never quite reached Julia Roberts-level fame, Carey sustained a modest career with roles such as Sooze in SubUrbia (1996) and Nurse Marciela Keith on Chicago Hope (1994-2000). Throughout this period she read for numerous major films, leaving behind an interesting and unusual collection of original screenplays that document the everyday realities of a young woman fighting for her foothold in '90s Hollywood. Description
Newburyport: W. & J. Gilman, 1810. FIRST EDITION. Original calf-backed boards, spine label; interior somewhat browned due to paper stock. An amazing survival. First edition, though Faust’s Catechism had been printed in 1795 with a second edition in 1798. Faust (1755-1842) was a German obstetrician and writer, who produced a range of texts designed at improving health amongst the general public. His “Health Catechism” (Gesundheits-katechismus Zum Gebrauche in Den Schulen und Beim Häuslichen Unterrichte, Bückeburg, 1794) was aimed at children and used a popular question and answer format, which was designed to help people – especially youth – memorize the information. Faust’s writing reflects a trend amongst some medical professionals of the early nineteenth century to conflate health and spiritual concerns, where attending to the body became part of moral practice. Children here are taught to interpret care for their bodies as a moral duty, reinforcing his claims with bible verses on similar topics. Notably, and reflecting the growth in utilitarian ideas that saw pleasure and pain as drivers of human behavior, the healthy body is a happy body, and pain and unpleasant emotions signs of physical and moral disorder. According to the “Advertisement” prefacing the text, “in the compilation of this work, Dr. Faust's Catechism of health, improved and corrected by Dr. Gregory of Edinburgh, has been taken for the foundation; a few observations are omitted, as being foreign to the situation and habits of society in this country; and copious additions have been made, by selections from the writings of medical men of the first respectability and talents, but principally from Willich’s Lectures on diet and regimen, and Parkinson's Medical admonitions.” Austin 763.

Description
Atlanta, Georgia: Jas. P. Harrison & Co, 1879. Very good; some light dust soiling, damp staining.. A passionately penned pamphlet advocating for swift quarantine measures to be enacted during an outbreak of yellow fever, and calling for other physicians to share research with colleagues: "... it behooves every medical man South, who has had personal experience in the treatment of yellow fever ... to bring forward whatever information he may have gathered, to instruct the community and enlighten the masses on the true nature of the pestilence, and to express fearlessly his views as to the best and surest means of prevention" (p. 3). Includes lengthy discussions of the role of the government and politicians in ensuring public health, with uncomfortable parallels to the present day. 8 copies in OCLC (Jan 2022). Dr. J. C. LeHardy practiced medicine in Savannah, Georgia, and advocated quarantining as a method of curbing the spread of yellow fever and similar diseases.
