Description
Paris: Renou and Maulde for the Author, 1859. FIRST EDITION THUS. Original printed wrappers, with a prospectus for Sagra’s collected works on the rear panel. Partially unopened. Minor foxing, but a good, genuine copy in original condition. First edition thus, an aphoristic credo on anarchy. Written as 1583 numbered maxims, this self-published profession of faith traces the logical development of a Protestant society to a post-religious anarchy, an eventuality the author believed unavoidable and beneficial. Aphorism 1532 states: “As true liberty cannot exist being separated from religious truth, that which is established by reason became anarchic”, tr. This work was published 10 years after Sagra’s exile from France for promoting radical ideas; in the prefatory matter he addresses the Académie des Sciences Morales et Politiques, who fought for his expulsion: “Illustrious Colleagues, You condemned my principles. Your judgment contributed to making me a victim of slander and misfortune. I suffered and kept silence for ten years; now: judge me”, tr. He had published a version of this book prior to his exile, and states in the lengthy memoir that precedes the main text that he thought it necessary to update based on recent events. Ramón de la Sagra (1798-1871) was the first known Spanish anarchist. He founded the world’s first anarchist journal El Porvenir in 1845, which was quickly suppressed. In addition to his prolific political activities, he was a celebrated botanist and served as director of the botanical gardens of Havana. OCLC locates 4 institutional copies in the U.S.: Columbia, Harvard, Fisher, and Univ. of Kansas. Caillet 9129.

Description
Venice: Typographia Herziana, 1740. Double column, title in red and black, full-page etched frontispiece in Vol I, woodcut illustrations throughout. Contemporary stiff vellum, manuscript spine titles. Some minor dampstaining, but otherwise a remarkably good set. Folded in are a manuscript devotional poem, a letter dated 11 Nov. 1856, a printed leaflet oration to St. Felix of Nola, and an etched vignette of St. Pius X. Ownership inscription on the front flyleaf of Vol I dated 1906. Finely illustrated edition of the Sixto-Clementine Vulgate version of the Bible, the translation officially authorized by the Vatican until 1979. Originally published in 1592, it contains rules for understanding Scripture, the preface written by Cardinal Robert Bellarmine, the papal bull by Clement VIII asserting this version’s priority, the Tridentine decree on canonical books, preface by St. Jerome, chapter summaries under each heading, and marginal concordances. This copy contains a few mementos of a 19th century Italian owner, including a four-page poem of piety and a letter from one Catarina Orato Lami to her uncle, written while visiting the Roman Baths in Bath, England. Not in Darlow and Moule.

Description
Washington: Government Printing Office, 1900. Map. Color lithograph. Image measures 13 1/2" x 11 1/2" This map depicting the islands of Masbate and Ticao was originally prepared as part of a series made by the Manila Observatory of the Jesuits in 1899. Led by director P. Jose Algue, the Observatory employed only native Philippine draftsmen to complete the technical work required for the project. Upon learning of the Jesuits' undertaking, the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey entered into cooperation with the Observatory to produce a comprehensive atlas of the Philippine archipelago. The 30 maps were then brought to the U.S., redrawn slightly with regards to scale and projection, and published by the Survey in 1900 as the "Atlas of the Philippine Islands," the third edition in a series of special publications. This unique combination of American command and a wholly Spaniard or Filipino staff made the Observatory a rare example of cooperation during the period of the Philippine-American War, which continued from 1898 to 1902. Furthermore, the project is significant in its own right given the historic difficulty of mapping the islands, owing in particular to constant disputes between the warring imperial powers of Spain and Portugal. As the superintendent of the Survey describes in the atlas's introduction, the Jesuits spared no pains in securing all available data, and verified them by consultation with members of other religious orders, as well as with old residents, travels, and explorers. The map depicts the island of Leyte and surrounding islands. Topography is artistically rendered, and rivers, cities, towns, carriage roads, horse paths, foot trails, seismic stations, and lighthouses are labeled. An inset in the lower left depict the city and port of Tacloran, at the southern entrance to the San Juanico Strait separating the islands of Samar and Leyte. The map is in very good condition with vibrant color. One chip and small binding holes to left margin, not affecting the image. The U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey was first established in 1807. After the Civil War, the bureau took responsibility for mapping and conducting geodetic surveys of the the interior of the expanding country. The beautiful quality of this map of the Philippines, particularly with regard to geodetic detail, attests to the fascinating history and hard work that lay behind it.
