Description
1925. Signed. WEIZMANN, Chaim. Autograph letter signed. Oakwood, London, January 31, 1925. Single sheet of booklet-style letterhead, measuring 5-1/4 by 7 inches; pp. 2 (with text). $4250.Wonderful autograph signed letter, dated 1925, from the first president of Israel, Chaim Weizmann, to his ex-fiancee, pathologist Sophia Sonia Getzova, discussing difficulty installing a director at a medical institute and noting discussions about the issue with Albert Einstein. Text in Russian. The letter, written on ""Oakwood 16. Addison Crescent"" stationery and dated ""Jan. 31/25,"" reads in full translation from the original Russian: ""I've explained to Leo in great detail that it is impossible to make any appointments now, because the director of the Institute has not yet been appointed. His nomination depends partly on the American doctors. We've proposed Prof. Rosenthal and I'm expecting to hear of their agreement any time now. As soon as it is known, I'll present your candidature to Rosenthal and shall, of course, support it. It's impossible to process otherwise just now. I've explained how matters stand both to Leo and to Einstein, who has spoken to me about this. I have only limited influence in this Institute, which is getting its entire financial support from the American doctors, and any premature step on my part might spoil the chances of success. As soon as the director of the Institute is appointed, I'll be able to approach him. I'm leaving for America on Wednesday and hope to make final arrangements there regarding the director; I shall then be able to take further steps. With my best wishes for your health and warm greetings. Chaim."" After being engaged to Sophia Sonia Getzova for four years, Chaim Weizmann broke the engagement. According to the magazine of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, ""Russian-born Sophia Getzova was a pioneering pathologist who, despite outstanding academic credentials, was unable to obtain a permanent appointment in Europe due to her foreign origins and gender. In 1925, with a warm reference from Albert Einstein, she emigrated [to Israel] and was appointed head of the Institute of Pathological Anatomy at the Hadassah Hospital on Mount Scopus. In 1927, as part of a cooperation agreement between the [new] Hebrew University and Hadassah, Getzova was appointed a senior lecturer."" Weizmann was an extremely accomplished chemist who spent substantial time in academia, helped to establish Hebrew University in Jerusalem, and founded the Weizmann Institute of Science. This allowed Weizmann to pave the way for Getzova's new position. Weizmann, of course, later became the first president of Israel. Faint horizontal crease. Fine condition.

Description
Venice: Ex Typographia Hertziana, 1736. Title in red and black. With woodcut initials and ornamental head- and tailpieces. Vellum-backed marbled boards; leaves slightly browned due to paper stock. An excellent copy. Later edition of the author's collected works, first printed in 1679. This Opera contains his complete writings, including transcripts of his lectures. Le Boe, or Sylvius was a follower of the iatrochemical school, a system based on the elements of chemistry and the new knowledge of circulation. He was one of the earliest advocates of Harvey's theory, and one of the most influential of the iatrochemists who treated all disease chemically; the first to distinguish between conglomerate and conglobate glands, to regard digestion as a chemical fermentation and to recognize the importance of the saliva and pancreatic juice. He was instrumental in the early recognition of tuberculosis which, up to his time, was known only in its advanced form. Sylvius (1614-72), physician, physiologist, anatomist, and chemist was an outstanding teacher. He established the first university chemical laboratory in Europe at Leyden. He is credited by Haller as giving the first description of the lateral cerebral fissure, which bears his name. Although the aqueduct from the third to the fourth ventricle had been previously noted, we owe to Sylvius the name of the aqueduct.

Philadelphia: Kimber and Conrad, 1814. First Edition with Cooper's notes.. Full contemporary calf.. Good; some overall browning with occasional spotting; bindings chafed.. 8vo, I - xl, 424; II - [4], 451, [9 - index] pp. + 7 engraved plates. Though Accum's treatise stands alone as an important compendium of chemistry informed by, and incorporating, the modern theories of Lavoisier and Thomson it is here present with the important additions - in two appendices - of the American polymath Thomas Cooper. Cooper, who was teaching at Dickinson College in Carlisle PA at this time, takes the opportunity of his assignment as editor to address the new theories of Lavoisier and the atomic theory of Dalton (via Thomson). It is a landmark in American chemistry. Rink #675; Cole #10a; see Neville p. 10.

Description
ix+309+[iv ads] pages. Small octavo (7 3/4" x 5 1/2"). bound in original publisher's burgundy cloth with gilt lettering to spine and cover with the preferred "THE MACMILLAN COMPANY" on spine. 2,130 copies printed. (BAL 11916) (Sisson & Martens 46) First edition. A collection of 13 essays written between 1900 and 1908, published in 1910. The lead essay, "Revolution", outlines how and why London renounced capitalism as a failed social system and declared himself an active participant in the "socialist revolution", the last essay is an autobiographical piece, and the essays in between are on diverse subjects. A few of the "essays" are actually humorous short fiction stories; others are serious, sometimes angry rants against capitalistic greed and political corruption. All of the pieces are thought-provoking and excellently written, though only loosely intellectual, highly opinionated, and rife with contradiction, as was London himself.Condition:Corners gently bumped, spine ends and corners moderately rubbed, previous owner's name on front end paper. Very good to fine dust jacket.
