Description
1822. [MAZOIS, Charles-Francois]. Le Palais de Scaurus, ou Decription d'une Maison Romaine, fragment d'un voyage fait a Rome vers la fin de la Republique par Mérovir, Prince des Suèves. 308 pp., illustrated with 12 engraved plates (one folding) and numerous vignettes in the text. 8vo, 210 x 125 mm., bound in contemporary dark green half morocco and marbled paper boards, spine with tan gilt label. Paris: Didot, 1822. Second edition of Mazois' very successful but mostly fantastic description of the ancient Roman palace of Scaurus. The majority of the archaeological material is conjecture, but some descriptions seem based on authentic sources, as witnessed by Mazois extensive footnotes. The work caught the imagination of the public. It went through a number of editions and was translated into German (1820) and Italian (1825). Mazois, the most able pupil of the dedicatee Charles Percier, had spent a number of years in Italy, chiefly documenting the excavations at Pompeii, published in his monumental Les Ruines de Pompeii (1809-27). Lacking half-title, a near fine copy. Borroni 8276. Olschki, Choix, 17569.
