Description
Glasgow: James MacLehose and Sons, 1903. Reprint of 2nd edition. Complete with all half-titles and frontispieces, maps and plates. Blue cloth, top edges gilt, uncut; text toned throughout. A very good set with the Cromwell bookplate in all volumes. Reprint of the second edition of the single most important collection of English travel expeditions prior to the seventeenth century. Hakluyt’s seminal work brought together many first-hand accounts of travel across the globe, rendering this set an invaluable resource for the history of discovery in the English empire and the colonization of the modern world. These accounts range from travelogs and documentation to diplomatic reports and depositions, and even include a lengthy poem about English policy. Also included is an essay by Sir Walter Raleigh on English voyages in the sixteenth century. Hakluyt (1552?-1616) was a geographer and historian of travel and discovery whose magnum opus was this 12 volume set. Educated at Oxford, he was also a respected a member of the clergy. His penchant for travel and exploration put him in the position of making the acquaintance of many English ambassadors, captains, and voyagers, all which became resources for this seminal work.

Description
London: William Heinemann, 1904. First edition. Original gray publisher's cloth binding embossed in gilt and black. A pleasing, square copy with some sunning to spine and light foxing to the closed edges of the text block and title page. Early gift inscription to front endpaper: "With warmest good wishes for Dec. 22, 1926 from Alice Herbert." The first novel by the prolific writer, pacifist, and philosopher, it has become quite scarce with no other copies on the market and OCLC reporting holdings at only 6 institutions in the U.S. "Evelyn Underhill was a prolific writer who published 39 books and more than 350 articles and reviews. In her early years she wrote about mysticism; in her latter years on the spiritual life as lived by ordinary people...Underhill began writing before she was sixteen, and her first publication (a collection of humorous verse about the law) appeared in 1902" (Evelyn Underhill Society). Only two years later, she released her first novel The Grey World. Drawing on tropes of Greek mythological heroes' missions to the underworld, and referencing Dante's Divine Comedy, Underhill's narrative is a psychological study that begins with the hero's death, moves through reincarnation and finally beyond the "grey world" to a space of happy reflection and peace. For her, it was a call for individuals to choose to appreciate the temporal beauty of the every day that so often goes unnoticed. "It seems so much easier these days to live morally rather than to live beautifully. Lots of us manage to exist for years without ever sinning against society, but we sin against loveliness every hour of the day." Among the most important English female religious writers of her time, Underhill was also "the first woman to lecture at Oxford...and the recipient of an honorary degree from the University of Aberdeen" (Greene). Her ideas about individual freedom as it applied to religion and politics even became a cornerstone of her debates with her contemporary C.S. Lewis. In their correspondence she argued that Lewis' "ideas about salvation depended too much on animals being 'tame.' This is perhaps why Lewis later emphasized that Aslan [in The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardobe] was not tame" (Armstrong). Her work, so focused on the human spiritual connection to others and the world, eventually led a previously apolitical writer to embrace pacifism and speak out at the rise of the Second World War. The Grey World, which remains under-studied compared to her later philosophical texts, gives insight into her evolution. "Her early insights deepen and mature and take on new expression. Her thought shifts from illumination of the mystic way to an exploration of the spiritual life and how it is to be lived in the world. This redirection follows from her early work and results in writing which eloquently argues for the importance of the spiritual life and how it is to be lived...The issue of war forces an articulation of one's most fundamental assumptions about reality...she calls for a deeper, more profound understanding of what it means to be a religious person in the mid-twentieth century" (Greene).

York, PA: Strength & Health Publishing Co, 1940. First Edition. First printing. Octavo. Card wrappers; portrait frontispiece; 320pp. Covers foxed at spine and margins; a few creases to wrapper edges; Very Good. Hoffman (1898-1985) served on the front in France as a lieutenant in Company A of the 111th Infantry; his memoir provides perhaps the best first-hand account of the American engagement at Hill 204 in Chateau Thierry in May, 1918. Hoffman went on to become an important American entrepreneur, the founder of York Barbell Co. in Pennsylvania and the acknowledged guru of American bodybuilding through the 1960s. This memoir, issued under the imprint of Hoffman's own publishing company, has long been a sought-after work, never common thanks no doubt to the rather mediocre production quality. No hardcover issue was produced for sale.

Oblong quarto (ca. 215 x 285 mm). Sewn. [1] (title), [9] pp. Scored for soprano and keyboard. Notated in dark brown ink on 10-stave rastrum-ruled paper. Slightly worn; outermost leaves browned, creased, and lightly soiled; some showthrough; minor foxing. RISM (an edition published in Zürich by Nägeli, AA2502III, 50). "Asioli's music is now forgotten, although the brilliance of his talent was widely acknowledged by his contemporaries. His idiom, pleasant and at times sentimental, is at its best in his vocal chamber music, which in style recalls Haydn and Mozart, without showing many traces of the stylistic crisis undergone by music at the beginning of the 19th century. His sinfonie have been compared to those by the young Beethoven, and his theatrical music was written in the style of Paisiello and Cimarosa. His didactic work survived longer, and it is to him that the Milan Conservatory owes the foundation of its library." Sergio Lattes and Roberta Montemorra Marvin in Grove Music Online.
