Bound in modern full dark brown morocco circa 1984, in a custom box. A fine copy, lightly washed, unpressed, the paper preserving its rattle. All edges gilt. Provenance: Ximenes (sold 1993), with receipt and scan of a note from Steve Weissman regarding the sale. "Although written about 1589 and entered in the Stationers' Registers in 1594, no earlier edition than the present is known. The fact that the 1594 entry (Arber II 650) entitles the play, 'The famous tragedie' seems to indicate some relation with the present for which Vavasour made an original entry in 1632. However, the text here printed has been edited and revised by Heywood at a date which does not admit of this being a reprint of a 1594 edition while the use of the world 'famous' in the title of this edition may be from the tradition of the play-bills, as was the case in Cooke's Greenes Tu Quoque, and not from the usage of an earlier printed title." (Pforzheimer) “The first recorded performance of play took place at the Rose Theatre on 26 February 1592. “Whether Marlowe could have been present at the play's opening in February is uncertain, for a month earlier he had been arrested for 'coynage'—coining money—in Flushing, or Vlissingen, in the Netherlands, and deported back to England 'to be tryed'.”(DNB) “Christopher Marlowe’s controversial career was abruptly curtailed when he was stabbed to death at the age of 29. His reputation as the greatest of the pre-Shakespearean dramatists rests on just seven plays written in the late 1580s and early 1590s. The best known of these is “Doctor Faustus” a thunderous study of magic and damnation. But perhaps the bleakest and most challenging of his works is ‘The Jew of Malta” now at the Swan theatre in Stratford in a new production by the Royal Shakespeare Company directed by Justin Audibert. “The timing of this revival is almost uncanny. While “Doctor Faustus” scared its early audiences with visions of hellfire, “The Jew of Malta” seems tailor-made for more topical fears. Its chief theme is antisemitism. It is a story of religious tensions and racist violence, of tangled motives and shifting sympathies, played out against the backdrop of a cynical society whose true creed is neither religion nor ideology but grasping materialist greed. A searchable online text reveals the play’s keywords to be “gold”, which occurs 38 times, followed by “death” (25), “villain” and “villainy” (24), “money” (23), “poison” (18), “slave” (16) and “policy” (13) – the last in its Elizabethan sense of cunning machiavellian stratagems. The presentation of the eponymous Jew, Barabas, veers between victim, anti-hero and monster. Brutalised – or as we now say “radicalised” – by ill treatment, he goes on a spree of cold-blooded killings. His victims are mostly Christians, but they also include his own daughter Abigail, who has fled to a nunnery, and a troop of Turkish soldiers burned alive in their garrison. He sums up his code of conduct, or survival, thus: First, be thou void of these affections: Compassion, love, vain hope, and heartless fear; Be moved at nothing; see thou pity none. “All this might suggest an uncomfortable evening in store, but with Marlowe such expectations are there to be upended, and this toxic cocktail of alienation and murder is laced throughout with deadpan black comedy. Think “Wolf Hall” reimagined by Quentin Tarantino, and you begin to get the feel of it. The title page of the first extant edition (1633) describes the play as a tragedy, but as TS Eliot observed nearly a century ago, it becomes more “intelligible” if one takes it “not as a tragedy … but as a farce”, written in a tone of “serious, even savage comic humour”. Eliot also enjoyed the equivocating shrug of Barabas’s response to a charge of fornication – “But that was in another country, / And besides the wench is dead” – and took it for the epigraph for his poem “Portrait of a Lady”. “The play is sometimes dated to around 1589, as it mentions the death of the Duke of Guise (December 1588), but the chronology of Marlowe’s plays is largely guesswork. The first record of it on stage was on 26 February 1592, when it was performed by Lord Strange’s Men at the Rose theatre in Southwark, with Edward Alleyn in the title role. It was the Rose’s top-earning play of the 1592-93 season, in a repertory that included such crowd-pleasers as Thomas Kyd’s “Spanish Tragedy” and Shakespeare’s “Henry VI Part I”. A line in the latter – “My heart, sweet boy, shall be thy sepulchre” – sounds like an echo of Barabas’s “These arms of mine shall be thy sepulchre”. This foreshadows the more extensive reverberations of Marlowe’s play in Shakespeare’s presentation of Shylock in “The Merchant of Venice”. “A successful later run at the Rose in 1594 can be related to the high-profile arraignment of the Queen’s physician, Rodrigo López. A Portuguese Jew, López was charged in February 1594 with conspiring to poison the Queen, and was executed with the usual barbarities in June. His trial, in the absence of hard evidence, featured a good deal of anti-Jewish propaganda, and it cannot be doubted that the concurrent revival of the play cashed in on the public mood arising from this. Marlowe was dead by this point (and anyway the playscript belonged to the Rose’s owner Philip Henslowe), so it was not he who cashed in on it. ““The Jew of Malta” is certainly a play about antisemitism, but is it also (as is often thought) an antisemitic play? It is true that Barabas is given the stock negative attributes of the Jew – rapacious and avaricious, a usurer who has “filled the gaols with bankrupts”, a hater of Christians – and that his name, echoing the Barabbas of the Gospels, alludes to the view that Jews were responsible for Christ’s crucifixion. It may also be true that Barabas was played wearing a large false nose, since a minor Jacobean comedy, “The Search for Money” by William Rowley, describes a usurer as wearing a “visage like the artificial Jew of Malta’s nose”: this is a late reference (c1609) so it may not describe the original production, though one notes that Marlowe’s text refers to Barabas as a “bottle-nosed knave”. “But Marlowe’s purpose in presenting us with this pantomime Jew is surely to satirise the crudity of the stereotype. It is a provocative or Hebdoesque piece of religious cartooning that challenges the complacencies and credulities of his audience. The outlandish elements of the portrait – “that Jew: he lives upon pickled grasshoppers and sauced mushrumps … He never put on clean shirt since he was circumcised …The hat he wears, Judas left under the elder when he hanged himself”, etc – are a reductio ad absurdum of antisemitic attitudes. It must be remembered that Jews were comparatively rare in Elizabethan England – they had been “expelled” three centuries earlier – so the populist fear of them that the play taps into was essentially folkloric. Contemporary accounts of Marlowe paint him as a trenchant critic of religious superstition – one who “perswades men … not to be afeard of bugbeares and hobgoblins” – and it seems unlikely he actually held the views that are voiced onstage (any more than he actually believed that the scholar Faustus deserved eternal damnation for his extracurricular studies in the occult). I offer this reading of the play as a corrective argument rather than a deeply held conviction – the latter is anyway a currency Marlowe valued very little. “Though Barabas bestrides the stage like a problematic colossus, there is a sense in which the presiding figure of the play is the one brought on at the beginning to deliver its 35-line prologue. The first words of the playscript are a stage direction: “Enter Machevill”. Here too we have a provocative stereotype, for “Machevill” (or “make-evil”) is of course a punning pronunciation of Machiavelli. The Florentine political philosopher Niccolò Machiavelli had died more than 50 years previously, but in England he remained a kind of bogeyman, deplored by the orthodox as one who divested political action of morality. He was essentially a banned author – none of his political texts had appeared in English. There were editions in Italian and Latin, and there were translations in manuscript, but no publisher had dared to print them. Another half-century would pass before Edward Dacre’s translations were printed: the Discourses in 1636, and that handbook of stark realpolitik, “The Prince”, in 1640. Marlowe’s machiavellian prologue is the coup de theatre of 1592, trailing these dangerous ideas – “I count religion but a childish toy / And hold there is no sin but ignorance” – and fixing the play’s dominant critique. When Barabas briefly becomes governor of Malta he muses in machiavellian vein on the need to profit from his power: For he that liveth in authority, And neither gets him friends nor fills his bags, Lives like the ass that Aesop speaketh of, That labours with a load of bread and wine, And leaves it off to snap on thistle tops. “These lines typify the toughness and stripped-down clarity of Marlowe’s versification, and they convey the play’s central message that the demon Barabas is in essence no different from the Christian governor, Fernese, who has been busily following the same amoral code of power, violence and profit under a cloak of religious hypocrisy – “Ay policy! That’s their profession, / And not simplicity as they suggest.” “Marlowe was himself no stranger to the tawdry world of political intrigue that is the milieu of the play, nor indeed to the dangers of being demonised. In the spring of 1593 he was incriminated by informers as a heretic and blasphemer: the presentation of him in such documents as the infamous “Baines Note” might well be described as the “pantomime atheist”. On 20 May he was brought before the privy council for questioning; 10 days later he was fatally stabbed through the right eye in a Deptford lodging-house – a dissident author (in one reading of this sequence of events) disappearing in a huddle of snoops and spies, those “climbing followers”, to borrow an ominous phrase from “The Jew of Malta”, who sought advancement in the downfall of others.”( Charles Nicholl, reviewing “The Jew of Malta” as staged by the Royal Shakespeare Company, Swan Theatre (Stratford on Avon), in The Guardian, March 2015).

Few texts of the Reformation period state so clearly the principles according to which the Fathers and the councils of the church may be considered authentic sources for Christian doctrine. However, to set the work within the canon of Melanchthon's theological work is not necessarily to say that other genres are not present in it… “In addition to being a response to reform-Catholicism, ‘De ecclesiae autoritate’ addressed changing relationships among Protestants, in particular between princes and theologians. In both contexts the treatise is a sharpened statement of the principles of evangelical doctrine and church life. “As the title indicates, the central theme of the work is the authority of the church, a topic of utmost importance in the discussions of the late 1530s. Melanchthon's discussion demonstrates that the church itself must be defined as clearly as the principles that determine its authenticity. Melanchthon defines the church as a visible community, and not the ‘Platonic republic’ that Roman Catholic polemicists had accused the Reformers' ‘communio sanctorum’ (community of saints) of being. As a visible community the church is a mixed congregation of pious and impious alike, a macrocosm of the individual believer as ‘simul iustus et peccator.’ In emphasizing this aspect of Lutheran ecclesiology, ‘De ecclesiae autoritate’ complements the Augsburg Confession and Apology: the Confession had identified the gospel as one of the marks of the church, and ‘De ecclesiae autoritate’ states that the gospel is articulated in the articles of faith, which the church teaches and learns. “The church is the body that adheres to and sustains the articles: understanding the church this way marks a new development in Melanchthon's thought and reworks the dialectic of divine and human in the life of the Christian community. By grounding the church in the articles of faith, Melanchthon denies the church a role in formulating doctrine… “Among the Catholic theologians it was understood that the church as an arbiter of doctrine not only could resolve points of dispute but, further, could formulate doctrines without biblical grounds. For Melanchthon, on the other hand, the articles of faith are biblical, fixed, and absolute. The church retains them, and preserving them is the mark of the church -a position diametrically opposed to the Romanist view that doctrine is valid when and because the church has explicitly formulated it. In this treatise Melanchthon restricts the definition of the Word of God to the biblical Word, thereby limiting the role of councils and theologians in formulating doctrine… “[Yet] ‘De ecclesiae autoritate’ is clearly about the authority of the ecclesial community and not simply about authorities for doctrine. The Word of God remains the final authority in all matters affecting the church, but the Word is not the sole authority being discussed in Melanchthon's treatise. Contemporary vellum; A8 trimmed with some loss to text at fore-edge margin due to misaligned imposition, running titles trimmed First Antwerp edition, fifth edition overall, of this foundational and wildly popular pastoral prose romance and Shakespeare sourcebook, written in Spanish by the Portuguese author Jorge de Montemayor (c.1520-1561). First published in 1559 in Valencia, Diana "holds the distinction of being the first fully developed Iberian romance of the sixteenth century" (Cambridge History of Spanish Literature, 2005, p. 187). Diana was one of the most popular works of early modern Europe, running to dozens of editions in Spanish throughout the second half of the 16th century, as well as numerous translations. The first English translation, by Bartholomew Young, was published in 1598. Diana’s plot, a complicated rustic masquerade set in a fantastical Arcadian world populated by nymphs, giants and other mythical creatures, “centers on the shepherd Sireno's search for a cure to love's misery, occasioned by the beautiful shepherdess Diana who has forsaken him to marry another shepherd, Delio” (ibid). Works inspired by Diana include Sidney’s Arcadia, Cervantes’ first prose work, La Galatea (Cervantes also mentions Diana in Don Quixote), and Shakespeare’s Two Gentlemen of Verona, which borrows its cross-dressing love-triangle plot from Felismena’s tale. "The ultimate source of the play was Diana by J. de Montemayor, which Shakespeare could have read in a French translation (1578), or possibly in B. Yonge's English version, not published until 1598" (Muir, The Sources of Shakespeare's Plays, p. 17). All 16th-century editions of Diana are rare. The Pirie copy of the 1598 Young translation brought $14,000 hammer at his sale (Sotheby’s, New York 2015, lot 597). The last copy of this 1561 Antwerp fifth edition to appear at auction was in J. Peeters-Fontainas’s renowned collection of Spanish books printed in the Spanish Netherlands, sold at his 1978 sale (Sotheby's, London, lot 368, £750 hammer). Boston, 1847. Broadsheet menu (31 x 13.6 cm.), [2] pages. Illustrated with an engraving of the hotel from across Boston's Bowdoin Square. A menu and wine list for the hotel restaurant of Revere House, issued in the hotel's inaugural year. Built on the site of home of Boston's Kirk Boote, Revere House became one of the city's leading hotels, hosting guests that included Charles Dickens, Jenny Lind, and Walt Whitman, and Daniel Webster addressed audience from the steps of the portico. Paran Stevens (1802-1872), at times the general manager and later a co-owner of the hotel, was to become proprietor of additional luxury hotels in Claremont, N.H., Philadelphia and New York. He had a considerable reputation as connoisseur of wines and liquors and was said to have the finest nose in the country. The "Stevens Sherry" was tailor-made to suit his palette and it was said that his cellars were, "never equaled in America". The Wine List includes the usual categories: Madeira, Sherry, Champagne, Hock, Sauterne, Port, Burgundy, and Claret, along with a short selection of Porter and Ale. What is unusual is the detail in the descriptions of some of the Madeira and Sherry, including Dornelios, Vasconcellos Sercial, Rapid East India Madeira, imported by J. W. Boott, Esq. in 1819 – bottled in 1822, and Governor Phillip's imported in 1820, from Page, Phelps, & Co. ~ Paper is age-toned, and has a water stain along the bottom edge. Still bright and legible. Very good. No records of other copies of this menu have been located. Menus from any location in the United States prior to 1850 are very scarce. Rare.

Moderate toning and soiling. An unrecorded broadside that prints statistics relating to agricultural production for the region of Sancti Spiritus in central Cuba during the late 1830s. For each municipality, the broadside prints the number of property owners; ranches; land-grant farms; slaves; white employees; animals, including mules, donkeys, cows, and sheep; distances to transport and shipping hubs; and several other figures. In the bottom third of the broadside are printed the census figures from 1836, with the population totaling just over 40,000 people, and split into Black and white groups. Rather pointedly, the figures for the white population are divided by gender while the figures for the Black population are divided by status, free or slave. A very interesting statistical snapshot of a smaller, rural region in colonial Cuba in 1838. Not in OCLC.

"Born in Annapolis, Maryland, James Thorne Smith had a brief but prolific career as a best-selling comic novelist. He began his working years as an advertising copy-writer, but soon turned to fiction writing. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1917 and worked as an editor and writer for The Broadside, a newspaper for enlisted men. His stories about an inept serviceman, Biltmore Oswald, became wildly popular among the magazine's readers. After the war, he moved to Greenwich Village, where he became friends with writers such as Sinclair Lewis and had a brief affair with Dorothy Parker. He continued to work in advertising while trying to succeed as a poet. After marrying in 1919, he and his wife frequently visited the experimental community of Free Acres in nearby New Jersey. Browning to page edges, not affecting image. Very good. Ovum, fetus, fetal membranes, placenta, and umbilical cord, shown in isolation, in seven numbered illustrations. 1 & 2. Ovum shown unfertilized and fertilized. 3. Fetus shown at 25 days gestation with placenta, membranes and umbilical cord. 4. Fetus shown at 40 days gestation. 5 & 6. Male fetus shown at 10 weeks gestation with umbilical cord, anterior and lateral views. 7. Male fetus shown at eight months gestation with placenta, fetal membranes, and umbilical cord. Originally published in 1685 (a later, Dutch edition, was published in 1690), Anatomia Humani Corporis features 105 copperplate engravings of the body, illustrating the muscular, skeletal, reproductive, and systemic organization of the human body with commentary. Bidloo's anatomical atlas is one of the largest atlases created in the early modern period. The drawings for the illustrations were designed by the Dutch artist Gerard de Lairesse, a close acquaintance of Bidloo's, and engraved by the brothers Peter and Philip van Gunst. Considered as an artistic meditation on anatomy, Lairesse's designs are a total departure from the idealistic tradition inaugurated by the Vesalian woodcuts. They present the body not only in almost life size scale, but with the finely detailed accuracy that only a skilled artist could provide. The infant mortality rate in 1685 was about 30% of live births. He thus brought the qualities of Dutch still-life painting into anatomical illustration. GOVARD BIDLOO (1649-1713) was born in Amsterdam, in 1649. He earned his medical degree at Franeker Unviersity in 1682. During his years in Amsterdam, Bidloo was heavily involved in the theatre community through the writing and translation of many plays. It is here that Bidloo became acquainted with the artist, Gerard de Lairesse. Bidloo was appointed Professor of Anatomy at the Hague, which he held between the years of 1688 and 1694. GERARD DE LARAISSE (1641 – 1711) was a Dutch Golden Age painter and art theorist. His importance grew in the period following the death of Rembrandt, and his baroque style made him one of the most popular painters in Amsterdam at that time. For him theory meant the strict adherence to rules. The ultimate purpose of the visual arts was the improvement of mankind, and therefore art must, above all, be lofty and edifying. He maintained that "a good painting has a clue, indicating what holds the composition together." GARRISON-MORTON No. 385 "Lairesse displayed his figures with everyday realism and sensuality, setting objects such as a book, a jar, a crawling fly in the same space as a dissected limb or torso. He thus brought the qualities of Dutch still-life painting into anatomical illustration, De Lairesse's images of dissected pregnancies and premature infants also reflect compassion—a quality unusual in art that was intended primarily to be scientific." In each, Robson affects a technical, quasi-scientific style in the essays, which tone is matched by the austere typographical presentation of the pamphlets which, as Johanna Drucker noted in a recent Substack post, have a "bureaucratic aesthetic" as if "the appropriate context for its appearance might be a medical administration association conference hotel in the Midwest in the 1970s." Behind it is nevertheless a well-developed if idiosyncratic system for the scoring and performance of sound poetry, employed elsewhere by the author in his own poetry book publications and performances.

First American Edition, published seven months after the 1919-dated English edition, of one of the scarcer John Buchan books (co-authored by his wife Susan, who, a childhood friend of Virginia Stephen, was an author in her own right). This book is not to be confused with his entirely-different 1936 Richard Hannay mystery for which he used the exact same title (though titled THE MAN FROM THE NORLANDS in the U.S.). This earlier title, pseudonymously published, is instead a fictional discussion of political, economic and social issues of the time (such as the Paris Peace Conference and Treaty of Versailles, the League of Nations, and labor issues). A number of characters -- landowner, Labour M.P., journalist, captain of industry, parish minister... -- meet at a shooting-lodge on a Scottish island to discuss the post-war world... Peace has been bought with millions of lives; what is to be made of it?... The summing-up is given to the minister: "Politics are a collection of views, most of them contradictory, and nearly all of them true. Statesmanship means admitting the contradictions and paying due respect to the half-truths and trying to harmonise them. The fool seizes on a half-truth, and exaggerates it and pretends it is the whole truth and the only truth" [J.A. Smith]. An appropriate summing-up more than a century later! This is a fine, bright copy (a few tiny speckles on the yellow spine); included is the very scarce dust jacket, with the same front cover design as the book's -- remarkably fine as well. Undoubtedly, a low number of copies were printed, of a book with this subject matter: in our experience it is quite a scarce book, and copies in this condition are seldom encountered.
