Description
Full limp morocco with silk endleaves; a.e.g.. Very good; some wear to the joints of the binding. 4to, eight autograph letters mounted or inset, bound up with the engraved portrait of Stevenson by Paul Meredith. The assemblage of an anonymous collector prior to WWII. 1 - A 3 pp. ALs to Sidney Colvin from Edinburgh, Oct. 15, 1873 in which Stevenson, on the threshold of taking up the law and traveling to London for an examination of his suitability at one of the Inns of Court, tells Colvin of his present illness and formalities of the application. 2 - A 4 pp ALs on Stevenson's engraved stationary to "Bob" (perhaps his cousin R A M Stevenson resident in France?) complaining of Edinburgh, his health (leg wound), seeking news, correct addresses in Paris. 3 - A 2 pp ALs on Stevenson's engraved stationary to Sidney Colvin dated 1874 (in a later pencil notation). A chatty personal note concerning his health and the weather. 4 - A 2 pp. signed note to his mother dated October 23, 1885 requesting whiskey and then listing books he would like (a number dealing with Wellington); stating that he has strained his credit and does not want to order them. 5 - A 3 pp. ALs (with the envelope) to Frederick Locker dated Sept. 24, 1886. A note of thanks containing a comment and compliment on the author's verse: " I suppose, if you please, you may say your verses are thin. (Would you so describe an arrow, by the way? And one that has struck the gold? ... and I have found them inimitably elegant ...." 6 - A 3pp. ALs to his mother dated June 27, 1887. He is responding to a letter of hers that has "vexed" him. She was refusing the proposed move to America for which Stevenson was arguing. 7 - A 2pp. ALs (with the envelope) to Frederick Locker dated Feb. 5, 1887. A short complaint laden letter about his health. 8 - A lengthy, closely written autograph note signed in full to Frederick Locker, dated Sept. 1886. Stevenson's response to Locker sending him a check for what Stevenson states was not an appeal for money but for Locker's intercession on behalf of an acquaintance for an application to Christ's Hospital. The letter is a lengthy explanation of his reasoning behind the request and how it may have appeared as an appeal for money.

210mm x 130mm. Printed in 1805 in England. Engraved by J. Pass. Hand colored engraving. In very good condition with the binding holes on the left. Marcus Bloch was born in Anspach. He was a medical doctor but became interested in natural history at an early age and studied intestinal worms. When he was 57, Bloch began his studies of fish. His first original work was on German fish. His study of foreign fish was based on the work of others thereby incorporating a great deal of inaccurate findings along with imaginative illustrations. He was one of the first students of fish to publish a series of fish prints. Bloch worked with many artists and J. Pass was just one of many.

Description
1673. (ALLESTREE, Richard and FELL, John). The Ladies Calling in Two Parts. By the Author of the Whole Duty of Man… Oxford: At the Theater, 1677. Octavo, contemporary full brown mottled calf, raised bands, elaborately gilt-decorated spine. $1350.Early (fifth) edition of this classic instructional book for women, with engraved frontispiece, in handsome contemporary calf-gilt.The authors explain that this account is ""a necessary Charity to the Sex, to acquaint them with their own Value, animate them to some higher thoughts of themselves; not to yield their Suffrage to those injurious Estimates the World hath made of them."" Among the many feminine virtues examined are modesty (""There are women who think they have not made a sufficient escape from their sex, 'till they have assumed the Vices of men too""), meekness (""A clamorous woman is lookt on, tho not with reverence, yet with much dread""), compassion, affability and piety, as well as the role of woman as wife, widow and virgin (""An old Maid is now thought such a curse as no Poetic fury can exceed, look'd on as the most calamitous Creature in nature""). Though the book was anonymously written, it has been theorized for many years that the authors are John Fell, bishop of Oxford and dean of Christ Church, and Richard Allestree, canon of Christ Church, both Royalists who were persecuted during the Commonwealth. With contents leaf at rear. Engraved frontispiece bound in before page 1. Wing A1145. Interior fine, expert restoration to attractive calf binding.

Description
Boston: L.C. Page & Company. Very Good+ in Very Good+ dj. (c.1925). Baby Peggy Edition. Hardcover. (price-clipped) [modest wear to spine extremities and lower corners; the jacket has a few small nicks at both ends of the spine, and some minor winkling across the top edge of the rear panel]. (B&W photographs) SIGNED by "Baby Peggy" / Diana Serra Cary on the title page. Reprint of a Burnett short story (originally published in 1881 and later adapted for the stage), issued as a tie-in to the 1924 movie adaptation, retitled THE FAMILY SECRET, and illustrated with numerous stills from the film. The movie starred "Baby Peggy" (born Peggy-Jean Montgomery in 1918), who was then one of Hollywood's most famous (and highly-paid) child stars, but whose stardom would come to an abrupt halt just a few years later. However, in 1925 she was still a big enough deal to have several "Baby Peggy Editions" of movie-sourced books issued to capitalize on her popularity. As her career as a top-line film star began to fade, she turned to vaudeville (successfully for a time), and then to extra work, before getting out of showbiz altogether and moving on to other lines of work. Later in life she established herself as a respected film historian and biographer, and published her own memoir, "What Ever Happened to Baby Peggy," in 1996. Prior to her death in 2020, she was the oldest living person who had been a genuine star during the silent film era. Signed by Actress .
