Description: Germany: np, 1491. First edition. Framed. Very Good. LARGE HISTORIATED INITIAL DEPICTING A POPE, FINELY ILLUMINATED IN GOLD AND RICH COLOUR. Reading from a lectern, the Pope is depicted in full regalia, wearing the distinctive triple crown, or triregnum, and holding the crucifix-topped crosier. His robe is a deep blue and likely pigmented by lapis lazuli-a mineral so valuable in Medieval Europe that is typically reserved for the Virgin Mary and occasionally referred to as blue gold. A vista of green hillsides and blue mountains is seen from a window within the miniature. Noteworthy are the multiple textiles displayed in the room, including mauve drapery as well as the lectern cloth whose embroidered design is emulated here in gold filagree. Highly intricate, monochromatic green acanthine detail adorns the body of the initial. If such handiwork does not alone merit admiration, the gilding of the initial's field as well as that of the Pope's halo showcase excellent tooling-the use of metal stamps to create blind impressions on the surface of the gold. Tooled flowers and foliage pattern the field while circles of varying design radiate around the papal triple crown. A liturgical calendar in the top right of the miniature reads "1491", providing both a terminus ad quo for the manuscript and a possible identity for the miniature's subject. Pope Innocent VIII reigned from 1484 to 1492, and so perhaps he is represented in this miniature, but it is equally possible the image simply represents a generic figure of a pope. Size as visible through frame: 125 x 102 mm (5.0 x 4.0 inches). With frame: approx. 10x9 in. S. Germany, c.1491. Some loss to the colour around the curve of the "P". Striking contrast of green, blue and burnished gold. Uncommon subject for historiated initials, with much to appreciate historically and aesthetically in this handsomely-sized piece. With linen matte and early frame (some chips on frame). Not examined out of frame. Some toning and scattered, light foxing. This law was promulgated at the end of 1856 by the new liberal government of Mexico following its ascendancy in the mid-1850s, and preceded the reform Constitution of 1857 by two months. Its statutes defined "crimes against the independence and security of the nation," including various forms of treason, rebellion, and foreign military service or assistance, and made them punishable by death. The law anticipated conservative resistance and revolt against the new policies of the liberal faction that aimed to strip power and influence from the church and traditional aristocracy of the country. Their efforts indeed led to full-scale civil war in 1858 and the second French intervention in the early 1860s. OCLC locates a small handful of institutional copies and we locate just one in available sales records. Scarce, and in attractive original wrappers.

First edition, limited to 300 numbered copies (of which this is no. 21), and the dedication copy, inscribed by Symons on the front free endpaper (oddly, his inscription virtually repeats the printed dedication): "for Harold Fisher from whose eloquent lips, one sultry midnight seven years ago, I first heard the story of Emin: from AJ." Symons' first book is a study of the 19th-century German who, under the assumed name of Emin Pasha, lived for fifteen years as a Turk in Equatorial Africa. The dedicatee, Captain Harold Fisher, was Symons' oldest and closest friend (see his brother Julian's excellent biography, 'A. J. A. Symons: His Life and Speculations,' Oxford, 1986). 'Emin' is the first book printed (by Oliver Simon at the Curwen Press) in Lutetia type designed by Van Krimpen. With the prospectus laid in. Alphonse James Albert Symons (1900-1941) was a bibliographer, biographer (particularly of Corvo), book collector and general bon vivant. He was the founder of the First Editions Club, a co-founder with Andre Simon of the Wine & Food Society, and, with Desmond Flower, of the 'Book Collector's Quarterly' (a forerunner to the 'Book Collector'). Three vintage publicity photographs from the 1942 film, one showing actor Alan Baxter in heavy makeup and costume as Freeman, the other two showing actors Robert Cummings and Priscilla Lane. One with a printed mimeo snipe affixed to the verso, and one with a provenance stamp on the same. From the archive of noted Hollywood still photographer Ray Jones. Born in Wisconsin on January 1, 1901. Jones worked for Paramount Pictures in the early 1930s, and was the first still photographer to win an Academy Award. He went on to be the head of the still photography department at Universal Pictures, where he worked well into the 1950s. A high spot among Alfred Hitchcock's early thrillers, and the director's only collaboration with author Dorothy Parker, who contributed to the screenplay. The film included much more location footage than most of the director's pictures, including Boulder Dam, locations in New York City including Radio City Music Hall and Rockefeller Center, and of course Liberty Island for the famed closing scene on the Statue of Liberty. 8 x 10 inches.
