Description
48 full-page woodcuts. 25 folding leaves. Large 8vo, orig. wrappers (wrappers rather tired, occasional light staining), new stitching. N.p.: 1658. First edition and very rare; WorldCat does not locate a copy. This is a very early and highly specialized monograph describing the design and construction of 48 different kinds of shelves, each with a specific purpose. They include staggered shelves; shelves to display art objects; shelves with pillars; ornamental shelves; shelves built to hold heavy loads; shelves which can be used as desks; a shelf for a bird cage; shelves to display fans; shelves to suggest cherry blossoms, plum blossoms, and pine, willow and maple trees; folding shelves; shelves with sliding doors; shelves for baskets; shelves tall enough for a two story house; symmetrical pairs of shelves; shelves for religious and ceremonial objects; shelves to store kimono; etc., etc. The colophon leaf states that the designs and techniques of construction had hitherto been passed on by word-of-mouth and practical experience. Throughout this book, a contemporary annotator has furnished measurements for each shelf design, with the occasional comment. Very good copy of an extremely rare book. Minor worming.

Description
London: Longman, Brown, Green, Longmans, & Roberts, 1856. First Edition. 12mo (17cm). Flexible red cloth boards, lettered in gilt; [i-viii],[1]-156,24pp. Binding spotted and a bit rubbed at edges, but still a pretty copy, clean, tight and unmarked; with bookplate of Arthur Hoe to front pastedown. A late but important work by the noted Anglo-Irish feminist, art historian, and traveller. The first portion of the lecture is taken up with a discussion of English laws regarding ownership of property after marriage, which Jameson characterizes as "cruel" and "unjust." The remainder of the work seeks to answer the question "whether there be not a possibility of [woman] sharing practically in the responsibilities of social as well as domestic life?" (p.3). Jameson goes on to enumerate a group of occupations suited to women in the fields of welfare and relief, including hospital-work, prison reform, reformatories, penitentiaries, and workhouses. Perhaps most interesting is a lengthy section devoted to the education and training of women, which begins with the proposition: "There is no adequate provision for the practical education of the middle and lower classes of girls in this country...[and] no one in power thinks it worth while to treat this part of educational statics with any particular attention" (p.109). Jameson goes on to suggest a number of rather radical reforms to the British educational system, including co-educational schools, vocational training of young women for "active, and social, and responsible avocations;" and the creation of colleges for working women. Infrequent in trade and, though not strictly rare, surprisingly (for a work by a well-known British author) narrowly held in American institutions - OCLC noting fewer than fifteen copies in North America, of which several would appear to be either circulating copies or mis-catalogued electronic resources.

A few tiny stains to rear wrapper, else very Near Fine. A corporate paean to the defeat of the Axis powers, reproducing 23 caricatures by Boris Artzybasheff painted expressly for the Wickwire Spencer Steel Company, a prominent steel manufacturer during the first half of the 20th century. Artzybasheff cleverly incorporated a different Wickwire Spencer product into each of the caricatures, turning the volume into both a catalog for the company, as well as a propaganda tool for distribution. Scarce, with OCLC showing 10 holdings in member institutions.

On chine-appliqué, with "Dessins d'Après Nature par Baugniet," "Imprimé par Degobert" and "Lithie. de la Société des Beaux-Arts" printed to mount just beneath image. Margins slightly soiled and foxed; edges slightly worn. A highly talented Belgian virtuoso, Artôt was a student of both Rodolphe and Auguste Kreutzer. "In 1843 Artôt [he] on a concert tour of America and Cuba with the soprano Cinti-Damoreau. He was one of the first violin virtuosos to visit America, the others being Vieuxtemps and Ole Bull; they vied with each other for the admiration of the American public, the French elements preferring Artôt's Parisian elegance to the awkward but modest stage presence of Ole Bull. While in America Artôt showed the first symptoms of the lung disease from which he died. His compositions include a Concerto in A minor (1845), fantasies and airs with variations and, in manuscript, string quartets and a Quintet for strings and piano." Description
Confidant of Missouri pioneer Jonathan Bryan (1759-1846) of the noted St. Charles family whose relatives included their neighbor Daniel Boone. DS, 1p, 7½" X 12", St. Charles County, MO, 1847 February 2. Near fine. Acknowledgment that Tuter, who signs himself as "Administrator of the Estate of Johnathan Bryan," has had a writ of replevin made out and issued to the St. Charles sheriff, Edward C. Cunningham (1809-65), for delivery to an unnamed offender. The writ seeks to recover the following property apparently wrongfully taken from Jonathan Bryan's estate: "one negro man a Slave named Heney one Two horse waggon and one pair of Briches Two Black horses one Lorrel horse with bold face one walnut Cupboard one clock one Bureau one bedstead and bedding one walnut Table one Trunk one Bible...." In other words, everything but the kitchen sink. Signed at the conclusion by Tater (in his definitely untutored hand). Tales of slaves are found in the Bryan family lore, such as: "Mrs. Jonathan Bryan, a kinswoman of Daniel Boone, was working in her yard with a slave woman when a boy slave screamed. She saw an Indian warrior heading for them with a tomahawk in one hand, and a gun in the other. The women ran for the house. Just as they were slamming the door, they caught the warrior's head and right arm between the door and facing. The slave woman grabbed the hatchet from his hand and killed him with a sharp blow. The women had barely recovered from their fright when the boy shouted again...." Could the slave boy in this old family legend by none less than the "Slave named Heney" whose return is demanded in this replevin suit? Quite unusual slavery item with an intriguing history.

Description
Includes many photographs of the national All-American Soap Box Derby finals at Akron, Ohio Lancaster and Akron Ohio, 1969-1970. This archive contains approximately 140 photographs ranging in size from 2.25" x 2.75" to 8" x 10". Most are b/w (about 30) and color (about 110) 3.5" square or 3.5" x 5" snapshots. The others are b/w and include official "photo finish" shots and professional publicity photos. Also included is a letter with a xerographic image of another racer and his car. All are in nice shape; about a half dozen of the snapshots have faded a little, and a similar number are blurred. A few of the images have notations in the margins or on their reverse. A few also have insignificant paper remnants on their reverse, presumably from a scrapbook. These photographs capture David's and his family's involvement in the competition process, various cars, travel, race starts and finishes, cars speeding down derby hills, spectators at local events and packing the grandstands at Derby Downs, celebrity involvement, ceremonies and award dinners, trophy presentations, etc. including: Two color snapshots from a party showing the 1969 national champion, Steve Souter of Texas, and the first national champion from 1934, Robert Turner, An inscribed xerographic image of the 1970 national champion, Sam Gupton, and his racer sent by Gupton following the championship and complimenting Brenstuhl on his car and racing skill, Parade snapshots of celebrities participating in the 1969 national championship: Joanne Worley from Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In, John Havlicek of the Boston Celtics, Hugh O'Brien from Wyatt Earp, Jackie Benington (the 1969 America's Junior Miss), Lorne Greene from Bonanza, and hometown basketball star, Gus Johnson from the Baltimore Bullets. (Also one photo shows Greene climbing to a seat in the grandstand.), and An 8" x 10" publicity photograph of the three participants of the 1970 celebrity race held along with the national championship: Lloyd Hughes from Room 222, James Drury from The Virginian, and Apollo 13 Astronaut Dick Gordon, who apparently won the event since he is holding the Oil Can Trophy. Based on some photo dates, Brenstuhl entered Soap Box Derby competitions in 1969 and 1970 when he twice won the city championship for Lancaster which qualified him to compete in the national All-American Soap Box Derby held annually in July at Derby Downs in Akron, Ohio. A terrific visual record of what at the time was a major annual competition that generated considerable national interest. Two years later the Derby lost Chevrolet as its primary sponsor for being "outdated and too expensive." It also lost its innocence the following year, when the national champion was disqualified after the discovery that his engineer uncle had doctored the racer's tires with a solution to reduce rolling resistance and installed a hidden electromagnetic device that pulled the car forward when the starting paddle receded. At the time, the Akron prosecutor compared the cheating to another then current scandal involving Marilyn Chambers, "It's like discovering that your Ivory Snow girl has made a blue movie." At the time of listing, nothing similar is for sale in the trade, and no similar archives have sold at auction per the Rare Book Hub. OCLC shows two institutions have much smaller groupings related to local races and the Akron-Summit Public Library has a 450-item collection including artifacts, films, documents, and official photos, but apparently not much in the way of vernacular photos from a competitor's viewpoint.

Description
Edinburgh & London, 1873. Hand-coloured lithograph. Sheet size: 21 1/2 x 15 3/4 inches. A very fine plate from Ravenscroft's 'The Pinetum Britannicum. A Descriptive Account of Hardy Coniferous Trees' Ravenscroft's work is the third (in order of publication) of the three great coniferous iconographies of the nineteenth century, following Bedford and Lambert. The very fine plates fall into two categories: botanical studies of details of the needles and fruit of the individual trees, and landscape studies of examples of individual trees in their natural habitat. This plate is an outstanding example of the former group, here drawn by James Black and lithographed by Robert Black. Cf. Nissen BBI 1588; cf. Great Flower Books (1990) p.127; cf. Stafleu & Cowan 8685.
