Description
Philadelphia: Printed for Hall and Sellers; J. Crukshank; and Young and McCulloch, 1787. First edition. Near Fine. First American edition of John Adams' influential treatise on government. Association copy owned by John Beckley, his signature and that of Mary Anne Beckley to title page. xx, [3] - 390 pp., laid paper, collated complete. Duodecimo, bound in sixes, contemporary calf rebacked in leather, contemporary morocco title lable laid on spine. Near Fine with moderate rubbing to boards and age-toning and minimal foxing throughout; lacking half of headband. Penciled date to title page and line to margin of page 347, generations of penciled bookseller inscriptions to endpapers, 20th century bookplate to front free endpaper. Binding square and firm. Housed in a custom clamshell case with very light wear, quarter calf over marbled paper, morocco title label to spine. Howes A60. The first edition of the Founding Father's major work, written in haste while he served as Ambassador to Great Britain. Adams, regarded as a Federalist though not fully of that party, argued that a complex and balanced government was needed to guard against the tyranny that might result from direct democracy as well as monarchy. The John Beckley (1757–1807) whose neat signature adorns the title page was a political opponent: Beckley attacked the Federalists in print and campaigned for Thomas Jefferson during the 1796 presidential election, which Jefferson lost to Adams. The new government replaced Beckley as Clerk of the House of Representatives, though he was reinstated when Jefferson won four years later. Jefferson also appointed Beckley, who had arrived in the colonies at the age of eleven as an indentured servant, as the first Librarian of Congress. The city of Beckley in West Virginia is named after him. A handsome association copy that must have been read by its notoriously partisan owner with gritted teeth.

Description
Venice: Giovanni Battista Sessa, June, 1504. THIRD OR FOURTH EDITION (of the two editions of 1504, priority has not been determined). THE FIRST TO BE EDITED BY LUCA GAURICO. Hardcover. Fine. Bound in modern vellum. Title with large woodcut showing the author in his study, surrounded by books, lecturing his students, one of whom takes notes. Sessa's cat-and-mouse printer's device appears on the same leaf.,The text is illustrated with 77 woodcut diagrams. A very fine copy, crisp and bright. There is a very light stain on the title page, a bit of soiling in the gutter of leaf A3, and a discreet paper repair to the fore-edge of the final leaf. "The 'Perspectiva communis' was the most widely used of all optical texts from the early fourteenth until the close of the sixteenth century, and it remains today the best index of what was known to the scientific community in general on the subject" (DSB). It was first printed in Milan around 1482, then, in 1503, it was included in a collection by Thomas Bradwardine, "Praeclarissimum mathematicarum opus"(Valencia). This 1504 edition, the first edited by Luca Gaurico, can be considered the third, although another edition of the pre-Gaurico version was also published in 1504, at Leipzig. A mathematician from Naples and teacher of Scaliger, Gaurico, who also edited the works of Archimedes and Ptolemy, completely revised the text. "The work on which Pecham's fame has chiefly rested is the Perspectiva communis, probably written between 1277 and 1279 during Pecham's professorship at the papal curia. In the first book Pecham discussed the propagation of light and color, the anatomy and, physiology of the eye, the act of visual perception, physical requirements for vision, the psychology of vision, and the errors of direct vision. In book II he discussed vision by reflected rays and presented a careful and sophisticated analysis of image formation by reflection. Book III was devoted to the phenomena of refraction, the rainbow, and the Milky Way. "The central feature of Pecham's optical system and the dominant theme of book I of the 'Perspectiva communis' is the theory of direct vision. Here, as elsewhere, Pecham endeavored to reconcile all the available authorities-Aristotle, Euclid, Augustine, al-Kindi, Ibn al-Haytham, Ibn Rushd, Grosseteste, and Bacon. Following Ibn al-Haytham, Pecham argued that the emission of visual rays from the observer's eye is neither necessary nor sufficient as an explanation of sight; the primary agent of sight is therefore the ray coming to the eye from a point on the visible object. But in an attempt to follow Aristotle, al-Kindi, and Grosseteste as well, Pecham argued that visual rays do nevertheless exist and perform the important, but not always necessary, function of moderating the luminous rays from the visible object and making them, "commensurate with the visual power." Thus Pecham, like Bacon, resolved the age-old debate between the emission and intromission theories of vision in favor of a twofold radiation, although, to be sure, priority was given to rays issuing from the visible object. "The rays issuing from points on the visible object fall perpendicularly onto the cornea and penetrate without refraction to the sensitive ocular organ, the glacial humor (or crystalline lens); nonperpendicular rays are weakened by refraction and therefore can be largely ignored. Since only one perpendicular ray issues from each point of the visible object and the collection of such perpendicular rays maintains a fixed order between the object and the eye, a one-to-one correspondence is established between points on the object and points on the glacial humor, and unconfused perception of the visual field is thus achieved. Vision is not "completed," however, in the glacial humor. There is a further propagation of the rays (or species) through the vitreous humor and optic nerve to the common nerve, where species from the two eyes combine, and eventually to the anterior part of the brain and the "place of interior judgment." "Pecham's optical system included significantly more than a theory of direct vision. He briefly discussed the doctrine of species; treated at length the propagation of rays; and developed a theory to explain how solar radiation, when passing through noncircular apertures, gives rise to circular images. He expressed the full law of reflection and applied it to image formation by plane, spherical, cylindrical, and conical mirrors; in this analysis he revealed an implicit understanding of the nature of the focal point of a concave mirror. Although he did not possess a mathematical law of refraction, he successfully applied the general qualitative principles of refraction to the images that result from refraction at plane and circular interfaces between transparent media of various densities. In his discussion of the rainbow Pecham again attempted to reconcile different theories. He argued that all three kinds of rays (rectilinear, reflected, and refracted) concur in the generation of the rainbow... "Pecham's 'Perspectiva communis' is still extant in more than sixty manuscripts and went through twelve printed editions, including a translation into Italian, between 1482 and 1665. It was used and cited by many medieval and Renaissance natural philosophers, including Dominicus de Clavasio, Henry of Langenstein, Blasius of Parma, Lorenzo Ghiberti, Leonardo da Vinci, Albert Brudzewski, Francesco Maurolico, Giambattista della Porta, Girolamo Fabrici, Johannes Kepler, Willebroad Snellius, and G. B. Riccioli. It was lectured upon, in the late Middle Ages, at the universities of Vienna, Prague, Paris, Leipzig, Cracow, Würzburg, Alcala, and Salamanca."(DSB).

Finely bound in contemporary green English straight grained morocco, with boards elaborately bordered in blind, large central diamond design in gilt to boards, spine elaborately lettered, ruled and decorated in gilt and blind, all edges gilt, gilt turn-ins, and brown endpapers. Strutz's bookplate to front pastedown, and light spotting to a few pages at front and rear of book. Overall, an attractively bound presentation copy. Todd & Bowden 158Aa. As with many of Scott's publications, Halidon Hill is rooted in the history and landscape of the Scottish border regions; Halidon Hill was the location of a notable 14th century battle in the Anglo-Scottish wars, which Scott elaborates on in his prefatory advertisement. In their bibliography, Todd & Bowden comment on the publication of this text: "As Scott explained to Byron the day after issue, this sketch was intended for Joanna Baillie's forthcoming Collection of Poems but, as it soon 'ran out of bounds', was now published separately." Accordingly, Scott dedicated Halidon Hill to Baillie instead of Byron, whom Todd & Bowden claim was the original dedicatee of choice.. Signed. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine. Presentation Copy.

1955. First Edition. LEWIS, W. Arthur. The Theory of Economic Growth. London: George Allen & Unwin, 1955. Octavo, original russet cloth, original dust jacket. $2000.First edition of Sir Arthur Lewis' 1955 groundbreaking work that confirmed his position as ""a leading authority on economic growth and political and social change in emerging nations,"" the first Black economist awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics, won jointly in 1979 with Theodore Schultz, in very scarce original dust jacket.Sir Arthur Lewis, born in St. Lucia, was a graduate of the London School of Economics and a Lecturer in Economics at the School during WWII. He also taught at Cambridge and Manchester University before his appointment as Vice Chancellor of the University College of the West Indies in Jamaica, followed by two decades at Princeton, where he was ""a professor of economics and international affairs at the Woodrow Wilson School and in the Dept. of Economics and later was appointed the James Madison Professor of Political Economy."" In 2018 Princeton named its ""prominent lecture hall in the Woodrow Wilson School"" after Lewis, its ""first Black full professor."" Heralded as ""one of the founders of development economics… an intellectual giant who contributed greatly to the world,"" Lewis also authored many key works in economics, was the ""first president of the Caribbean Development Bank and the first economic adviser to the government of Ghana"" (Binder, Legacy of Nobel Laureate Sir W. Arthur Lewis). The first Black economist to win a Nobel Prize in Economics, awarded jointly with Theodore Schultz in 1979, Lewis ranks as ""a leading authority on economic growth and political and social change in emerging nations… in 1954, he published what many economists considered one of the first academic works in this area, Theory of Economic Growth"" (New York Times). Its innovative approach to economic forces made him ""one of the foremost scholars of his time… his lucid and moderate analysis soon came to dominate much of the western debate on aid and development"" (London Times). Theory of Economic Growth is widely ""regarded as a masterly demonstration of how to apply economic analysis to the working, and the removal, of the imperfections of the real world"" (Seldon, Sir Arthur Lewis). At the Award Ceremony, Lewis was especially noted for his ""pioneering work… in economic development"" and his ""explanatory models which with the simplicity of genius mark out the causes of poverty among the population of the developing countries as well as the factors determining the unsatisfactory pace of development"" (Nobel Prize in Economics). As a Nobel laureate in Economics, Lewis also stands with Black leaders who won the Nobel Prize for Peace: African Americans Martin Luther King, Jr. (1964) and Ralph Bunche (1950), and South Africans Albert Luthuli (1960) and Desmond Tutu (1984). First edition, first printing: with no statement of edition or printing on the copyright page; dust jacket front flap with price, ""30s.net."" Text very fresh, only tiny chip to preliminary blank, cloth fine, mild spine toning to bright near-fine dust jacket.

Description
[Atlanta, Georgia]: (Eugene Talmadge Campaign?), 1946. Very good +. 14¾" x 8¼". Broadside. Very good plus with minimal wear and folded horizontally at center. This is an ugly reminder of the 1946 Georgia Gubernatorial primary which saw the disenfranchisement of thousands of African Americans--more than enough to sway that election. Earlier in 1946, the Georgia Democratic party's use of a white primary was struck down as unconstitutional. While four people ran in this primary, the race was mostly between Eugene Talmadge, a former two-term governor and staunch segregationist, and James V. Carmichael. Carmichael was a businessman who was seen as a progressive reformer and he had strong support among African American voters. The primary that year was held July 17, 1946. According to Joseph L. Bernd, in "White Supremacy and the Disfranchisement of Blacks in Georgia, 1946." (The Georgia Historical Quarterly, vol. 66, no. 4, 1982, pp. 492-513. JSTOR, www.jstor.org/stable/40580970. Accessed 16 Apr. 2021), "in some urban counties and in about fifty rural counties many blacks were not permitted to vote. Their disenfranchisement was a decisive influence upon the outcome of the gubernatorial primary election." The purging of Black votes was heavily aided by Talmadge's systematic campaign to disenfranchise black voters which included the distribution of thousands of vote-challenge forms to supporters as well as admonishing them that, "if the white citizens of the State of Georgia will wake up, they can disqualify and mark off the voters' list three-fourths of the Negro vote in this state." Another prong in Talmadge's approach was fear and intimidation; an example being when he also said, "wise Negroes will stay away from the white folks' ballot boxes on July 17. ... We are the true friends of the Negroes, always have been and always will be as long as they stay in the definite place we have provided for them." This broadside simultaneously cements support for Talmadge voters, gives cover for some on the fence, and also intimidates Black voters. It initially appears as something that would have been created by an African American organization as most of it is taken up with a portion of the front page of the April 27, 1946 edition of the Pittsburgh Courier. That page is dominated by an article regarding meetings of the Conference of Southern Students, an interracial organization of students founded the year before to "combat racial and religious prejudice and persecution," among other reasons. The idea that this is a Black political advertisement disappears in a flash when reading the text underneath the image of the Courier, "The above reproduction from the world's largest Negro newspaper clearly shows what is being preached to the Negro from all sides. The Southern Negro newspapers are following the lead of the Pittsburgh Courier in preaching this doctrine of equality to the Negroes in the South. Yet the principal Carmichael supporters are trying to lull the people of Georgia into believing there is no attempt being made from anywhere in the United States to give the Negro social or political equality. The above news reproduction belies their efforts. The only issue in this race IS White Supremacy [emphasis in text]."/ In addition to reminding Talmadge's strong supporters that white supremacy was at stake, any voter on the fence who may have been concerned about the welfare of African Americans could see right on the page that great progress was being made on their behalf. That notion of progress could then be used against any Black Georgian who complained about Talmadge or that their interests were not being adequately pursued. Our guess at who published the broadside is based on the facts above, but any number of hate/segregationist groups could have produced it. A relic of the voting rights battles in Georgia which continue today. This item is offered by Langdon Manor Books, LLC, antiquarian booksellers. New York: [National Gay Task Force], 1980. Near fine. 8½" x 3¾". Single leaf, tri-fold brochure, unfolding to 11" x 8½". Near fine. The National Gay Task Force ("NGTF") was formed in 1973 by several gay rights activists including Barbara Gittings and Bruce Voeller. The NGTF sought to enact change at the national level and had several early successes including: removal of homosexuality from the Index of Mental Disorders, introduction of a gay civil rights bill banning discrimination based on sexual preference, pushing to end employment discrimination by the United States Job Corps, and creating the Gay Media Task Force to improve the image of gays and lesbians depicted in the media. This brochure promoted their work with lesbians and feminists, with the text complemented by several compelling images. The organization exists today as the National LGBTQ+ Task Force. "Dear Genl, As a mark of remembrance for an old friend, I enclose a paper printed at this place. [not present] You will see how things moves in this section. I leave for the Rio Grande in a few days. The Oppening seems to be fine, and I am determined to try my chance there. I mist it here, in not returning last summer. Perhaps it is not too late. War or no war, I am bound to [go]. If things are amicably adjusted, there will be fine chance of making money, not only in the way of selling goods but in lands operations. – I will write you from the Rio Grande – and tell you how matters stands there. If you will favor me with a line or two, direct your letters at Galveston Texas Care of Messrs. J. Temple Doswell & Co. When my claim comes up in the Senate, please remember me. It was introduced in the lower House by the Hon. John Wentworth. Present my kind regards to Mrs. Cameron & family, Accept our very best wishes… N. Boilvin" Nicholas Boilvin, Sr. (1761-1827) was an American frontiersman, fur trader and influential early U.S. Indian Agent. He was the first appointed agent to the Winnebagos, as well as the Sauk and Meskwaki, and one of the earliest pioneers to settle in present-day Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. His sons Nicholas Boilvin, Jr. and William C. Boilvin both became successful business men. His wife was formerly a Miss St. Cyr of St. Louis. His daughter, Catherine Boilvin-Myott – also Metis, by her father's marriage to a Ho-Chunk woman, became prominent as a cultural mediator with early settlers in the next wave in the American era in Wisconsin, such as Henry and Susan Hempstead Gratiot of the founding family of St. Louis. Boilvin was born in Quebec. Boilvin traveled to the Northwest Territory after the signing of the Second Treaty of Paris 1783 and, after settling in the Illinois Territory, he began trading with the local tribes in the Prairie du Chien area around February 1810. Boilvin was appointed principal Indian Agent for the Prairie du Chien region on March 14, 1811. Observing the lead mining activity in the area by the Iowas, Sauk, Meskwaki, and Canadians during this time, he communicated the future importance of the lead mining region to Secretary of War William Eustis. He also reported the growing unrest among the Winnebago and other local tribes prior to Tecumseh's War. Boilvin and his family were forced to leave Prairie du Chien during the attack on the village by the British under Lt. Col. William McKay on July 14, 1814. Boilvin studied the customs and culture of the Winnebago and provided the Department of War with a written vocabulary of the Winnebago language. In the years prior to the Black Hawk War, he had the trust and confidence of many of the tribes in the Upper Mississippi. A skilled interpreter, he was present at several treaties signed between the Winnebago and the United States during the 1810s and 1820s. He and Maurice Blondeau often negotiated directly with tribes on behalf of the federal government. Boilvin was also a close friend of Michel Brisbois, who resided near Boilvin's home in Prairie du Chien during his later years. After the 1837 Winnebago Treaty, John Baptiste Peon, the husband of Angelica Brisbois, Michel's daughter, claimed in an affidavit that Boilvin relied on his wife for interpreting, though she was never compensated for this work. Both Boilvin and Anjelica Brisbois were deceased by this time. During the summer of 1827, Boilvin drowned while traveling upriver on a keel boat to St. Louis and was later buried there. His sub-agent John Marsh was in charge of the agency until the appointment of Joseph M. Street by then Secretary of War James Barbour under the recommendation of Henry Clay later that year. His son, Nicholas Boilvin, Jr., the writer of this letter, was involved in similar business as that of his father, he evidently was a frontier trader as well. And as seen in this letter traveling as far south as Texas and the border to trade and make money during the coming war with Mexico. Nicholas Boilvin and Simon Cameron are linked through early 19th century American Indian policy, specifically the Simon Cameron Indian Commission of 1838. Cameron served as a federal commissioner to the Winnebago Indians to adjudicate the tribe's claims. From this episode arose the first of many charges that Cameron engaged in corrupt practices. In this case he was accused of purchasing at discount rates drafts issued to Indians and then paying off the notes at inflated rates from his own bank. Although no criminal proceedings were brought against him, Cameron's reputation was forever tainted by these claims of corruption. Boilvin was involved in transactions scrutinized by this commission, which investigated claims against Native American lands, particularly focusing on the Winnebago (Ho-Chunk) and other tribes in the Old Northwest. Boilvin petitioned Congress, as seen in this letter, for compensation for his family and received $ 6,000, while the other family members received $ 4000.00 each. Inscribed and signed by author ('Dear Bill, It was great talking with you, and I hope this book speaks to your heart and mind! Crystal Wolfe, 5/17/24'). A few spots and smudges on edges, single light spine crease, light crease on back corner, tiny closed tear to spine base. 419 pp. Homelessness is an issue that is as complex as the people involved. This comprehensive book on homelessness explores the causes that have resulted in this epidemic - the arms and legs, and the heart and soul of it. Our Invisible Neighbors includes 12 personal accounts of people who have been homeless throughout the United States, an account from a man who was homeless as a child in the Dominican Republic, and a chapter with the synopsis of 107 celebrities who were once homeless. These stories of homelessness are from people of all ages, genders, races, and walks of life. These accounts include experiences of living on the subways, streets, in cars, parks, homeless shelters, and hotel shelters. Most importantly, several chapters explore the solutions of homelessness--how Finland, Canada, and certain cities and states in America have ended or greatly reduced the crisis of homelessness in their countries. This "cause of the heart" can be overcome through understanding, determination, and love for the people who have become Our Invisible Neighbors.

Description
Harmondsworth: Penguin Books, 1951. First edition. FIRST EDITION: PUBLISHED BEFORE THE DISCOVERY OF DNA, A DICTIONARY THAT WENT THROUGH 12 EDITIONS IN 53 YEARS. 7 inches tall paperback, color printed covers, 246 pp, [11 pp publisher's advertisements]. Light wear to covers, browning to page edges, unmarked. Very good minus in custom archival mylar cover. MICHAEL ABERCROMBIE (1912 – 1979) was first editor of the Journal of Embryology and Experimental Morphology. For most readers of the Journal, Abercrombie will be best known as an active research worker and the director of a great research laboratory. However, he was also an important figure in each of several other fields - but notably as a popularizer of science. The periodical Penguin New Biology, which he and his wife, M. L. Johnson, founded and jointly edited was perhaps his most significant enterprise in this genre. The Penguin Dictionary of Biology (offered here), of which he was one author, was equally successful. Abercrombie's work as an experimental embryologist began when he joined C. H. Waddington in exploring the properties of the avian organizer. Soon afterwards the outbreak of war turned him to work, inspired by J. Z. Young, on Wallerian nerve degeneration and wound healing. Although his interest in avian embryology persisted, work on the social behavior of cells - normal and neoplastic - became a preoccupation, and his analysis of contact inhibition of movement was to prove a turning point in modern cell biology. Abercrombie's contributions to cell morphology, cell population dynamics and cell behavior were characterized by his search for accurate quantitative measures of the processes he was studying.
