Description
Paris: Mallet-Bachelier, 1862. Full Description: PASTEUR, Louis. Mémoire sur les Corpuscules Organisés qui existent dans l'atmosphère, examen de la doctrine des générations spontanées. Extrait des Annales de chimie et de physique, 3e série, t. LXIV. Paris: Mallet-Bachelier, 1862. First separate edition. Octavo (9 x 5 1/2 inches; 226 x 140 mm). [4, blank], [1]-110 pp. Complete with two folding plates by Dulos. Original blue printed wrappers, rebacked to style. Wrappers printed in black. Edges uncut. Some minor soiling and rubbing to wrappers. A small closed tear to top margin of title-page, not affecting text. A library "Withdrawn" stamp to blank verso o title-page. An additional library stamp to the bottom margin of the final page of text. Internally very clean. Overall a very good copy. Housed in a custom cloth clamshell with printed paper spine label. "The longest and most important of Pasteur's papers on spontaneous generation, describing the series of classic experiments with bent-necked and sealed flasks by which he proved conclusively that fermentation and putrefaction are not the products of spontaneous generation, but result from contamination by airborne micro-organisms. Pasteur's experiments also mark the beginning of microbiology since, by showing how to sterilize a liquid and keep it sterile, he opened up the possibility of culturing and studying a single micro-organism in the absence of any others. Pasteur's paper was first printed in Vol. 16 of the Annales des sciences naturelles, Zoologie, 4th series (1861), but no offprint was made from this journal printing. The present offprint, printed in a small edition, was made from the Annales de chimie et de physique, 3rd series (1862), in which Pasteur's paper was reprinted a few months after its first appearance." (Norman 1654) PMM 336c. Norman 1654. HBS 69486. $6,500.

Paris: Aost and Gentil  , 1891. 20 full-page lithographed and 2 photographic plates. Original cloth-backed printed boards (some light stains). In excellent condition. First edition of this advertising portfolio for hospital installations. Flicoteaux and Co. was a Parisian construction firm that specialized in outfitting laboratories, infirmaries, and hospitals. Here the company exhibits their recent work (1885-1891) in operating rooms across France. The schematic drawings illustrate plumbing and drainage systems, ventilation, storage for medical equipment, beds, sinks, filtration apparati, heating and cooling, and hospital layouts, all to scale. The final two photographic plates show finished operating rooms at the Chartres and Necker hospitals. All the plates name the hospital in which the installation took place, and many include the name of the architect who designed the room and the specific surgeon who commissioned the work. OCLC locates no copies of this first edition and only two copies in the U.S. of a later edition (NYAM and Rochester). Index to French Production 1918 p. 122.

Neuchatel; Geneva: Samuel Fauche; Barde, Manget & Co., 1788. FIRST EDITIONS. I: With folding tables and engravings, title vignette, headpieces. Library stamp on title; II: marbled paper, foxing throughout. First editions of both works. Saussure (1740-99) conducted extensive investigations on the vapor pressure of water at various temperatures, using human hair as a hygrometric element. His four Essais contain the results of his demonstrations, including the famous experiment on the role of water vapor in the atmosphere. In the Défense, Saussure remarks that the only physicists who had attacked his Essais were inventors of hygrometers that differed from his. Time has proven the accuracy of Saussure's statements. Many of Saussure's scientific instruments became the founding collection of the Musée d'Histoire des Sciences de Genève when that museum opened its doors on 24 June 1964.

[Rickman, John (1771-1840).] Abstract of the answers and returns made pursuant to an act . . . intituled, "An act for taking an account of the population of Great Britain, and of the increase or diminution thereof" . . . Folio. xxxi, [3], 511, [3], 200, [2]pp. [London:] House of Commons, 1812. 339 x 202 mm. Half calf, gilt spine, boards ca. 1812, some wear and rubbing, a few small stains but sound. Very good. Stamp and inscription noting that this copy was once part of the library of the Bishopric of Worcester; notice printed on recto of last leaf: "This book is to be preserved in the Episcopal Library of Worcester, at Hartlebury." First Edition of Great Britain's second census, taken in 1811, ten years after the first census. The returns gave a total population of 12.6 million people, an increase of 1.6 million over 1801. The second census followed the model of the first: The first part detailed the number of people, their occupations, and numbers of families and houses in each of the British counties, while the second part, based on parish registers, listed the numbers of baptisms and burials per county. John Rickman, who drafted the bill that became the 1800 Census Act, supervised the first four British censuses and prepared the abstracts and reports for each. .

Description
Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company / The Riverside Press, 1955. First printing. Near fine in near fine jacket.. First edition of Bishop's second poetry collection, whose publication brought her great acclaim and crowned her several previous awards and honors with the 1956 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. Elizabeth Bishop's contemporary admirers were strikingly given to praising her for what she did not do, her poems for what they did not have: "no creditable mannerisms" and "not didactic," Marianne Moore wrote approvingly; they "strike no attitudes" and carry "not an ounce of superfluous emotional weight," Louise Bogan agreed; even Randall Jarrell singled out her "restraint." What remains, when all possible errors have been avoided? Lucidity, precision, beauty, mastery of form, great intelligence and perception. 8.5'' x 5.5''. Original white-lettered blue cloth. In original price-clipped blue and white dust jacket by Loren MacIver. viii, 95, [1] pages. Minor wear to boards, offsetting to endpapers. Jacket lightly edgeworn, spine toned.

Description
New York: Random House, 1968. FIRST EDITION. 218 x 140 mm. (8 5/8 x 5 1/2"). x, 113, [1] pp., [1] leaf. Publisher's navy blue buckram, front cover gilt with the author's initials, spine lettered in gilt. In original dust jacket. SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR on the front free endpaper: "The night is covered with signs. / for Paul Kresh, / who fought and bled for Akiba,/ and more besides - with long affection/ Muriel./ May 1968." Sam Huber, "Muriel Rukeyser, Mother of Everyone," Paris Review, 2018. Dust jacket spine with mild sunning, extremities very slightly worn; internally pristine. With a warm personal inscription from the author to an important advocate of her work, this is an excellent copy of one of Muriel Rukeyser's most influential collections. Poet, writer, and political activist Rukeyser (1913-80) composed "The Speed of Darkness" at a time of personal and political upheaval. She had suffered a stroke four years previously, and was adjusting to her life afterward while serving as president of PEN America (an organization promoting freedom of expression and human rights through literature), campaigning for feminist causes, and protesting against the Vietnam War. Divided into five sections ("Clues," "Games," "The Outer Banks," "Lives," and "The Speed of Darkness"), the present group of poems has given us some of Rukeyser's most-quoted lines, such as the verse from the title work: "The Universe is made of stories, not of atoms." While growing out of the political situation in which they are written, many of these poems have evergreen resonance: Sam Huber wrote in "The Paris Review" in 2018 about the resurgence of popularity of "Poem," first published in the present collection: "In moments of desperation, a favorite poem has resurfaced lately, sometimes on Twitter and sometimes in memory. . . 'Poem' has become a vehicle for anti-Trump sentiment, an equivocal fate for any artifact but one Rukeyser would not likely have chafed against. . . the vitality of her art depends on its responsiveness to the world it enters." The present copy contains a lengthy inscription by the author to a person of great importance in her career. Author, critic, and editor Paul Kresh (1919-97) was Rukeyser's longtime friend and an advocate for her writing as well as a person known for recording poets--including our author--reading their own works. The poem "Akiba," which appears in this collection, is a reflection on the life of Rabbi Akiba (also Akiva), the first-century scholar and sage. The poem was first published by Kresh in "American Judaism" magazine, of which he was editor, and was later included in his 1967 anthology "American Judaism Reader" before its inclusion in the present volume. Our copy was later part of the library of Belgian-American poet, translator, and editor Laure-Anne Bosselaar (b. 1943) and her husband Kurt Brown (1944-2013), also a prolific poet and editor of anthologies, as well as the founder and first director of the Aspen Writer's Conference. The present work is not difficult to locate for sale, but we could not find in present dealer listings or in RBH any signed copy (let alone to a significant inscribee)..

Description
New York: Capitol Publishing Company, Inc. (A Crescent Publication). Very Good. (c.1950). First Edition. Softcover. [covers a bit edgeworn, mostly along spine, light fading/rubbing to upper sections of front cover]. Trade PB (cartoon drawings) Substitute "Hounds" (or better yet, "Pigs") in the title, and you'd be closer to the mark: pretty much the entire book is devoted to the myriad ways in which the "working girls" of the world can expect to be sexually harassed by, well, nearly every single man they allow to get anywhere near them -- at work, at home, or in public. Pitched as "full of sharp wit and good humor," the book definitely has plenty of those, but on another level it's like a horror show in its casual acceptance that that's just the way things are, honey, so you'd better learn to deal with it. Was Dorothy Bond really "America's No. 1 Woman Cartoonist," as the cover blurb would have it, and the "Champion of the Working Girl" (ditto), attested to by her "thousands of fan letters"? On the first claim, one can only observe that in 1950 there wasn't a hell of a lot of competition for that title (although quite a few votes might go to Helen Hokinson). On the second claim, that appellation was the subtitle of a newspaper comic strip she produced for a time in the late 1940s entitled "Chlorine," about an office secretary, which in turn was an offshoot of an earlier strip called "The Ladies." Despite the somewhat depressing nature of the theme (to modern eyes, anyway), it has to be noted that most of the author's sarcastic barbs are aimed straight at the men she depicts -- and they hit their mark.. .
