Glasguae [Glasgow]: In Aedibus Academicis, Excudebant Robertus et Andreas Foulis, 1758. First thus. Near Fine. The rare large paper issue of the beautiful Foulis folio edition of the Odyssey. Near-contemporary diced russia rebacked with gilt spine. Two volumes, folio. Measuring 245 x 385 mm. [viii], 297; [iv], 336 pp. Bound without terminal blanks, otherwise complete. Pages ruled in red with half-titles and title-pages elaborately ruled in red and green. Corners somewhat rubbed. Some foxing to preliminaries in volume one, otherwise very clean and fresh throughout. A bright, Near Fine copy. The Foulis folio editions of the Odyssey (1758) and the Iliad (1756) are regarded as landmarks in Scottish printing and two of the finest editions of Homer ever produced. This large-paper issue, measuring about 5cm greater in both dimensions than the regular edition and printed on better-quality paper, is rare and particularly sumptuous (Gaskell, 319). The production was highly praised by Dibdin, both for its aesthetics and its accuracy, as "each sheet, before it was finally committed to the press, having been six times revised by various literary men" including Andrew Foulis, Professors James Moor and George Muirhead, and James Tweedie. The Foulis editions of the Odyssey and Iliad were both printed with specially-cut double pica type from the Edinburgh University type founder Andrew Wilson, resulting in a clear and readable text praised by Edward Gibbon, who wrote that he "read Homer with more pleasure in the Glasgow edition. Through that fine medium, the poet's sense seems more beautiful and transparent." ESTC T90250. Gaskell, Bibliography of the Foulis Press, 319. Near Fine.

[light external soiling and moderate age-toning, small closed tear at bottom of front cover; front endpaper stamped "Return to Story Dept. / Paramount Pictures Inc.," and there is also an old paper clip affixed to the top of the front endpaper which has caused the page to tear at that point so is better left in place]. (B&W photographs) The published script for the hit play (which ran for 642 performances on Broadway between September 1942 and January 1944), adapted by the author of the 1940 novel of the same name, in collaboration with Herschel Williams. The movie version, also called JANIE and released by Warner Bros. in September 1944, was stated to have been based only on the play, with no mention of the original source novel, which has itself become something of a rarity. (As of this writing, there is only a single copy of the novel on offer in the online marketplace -- also by ReadInk. See our separate listing for more speculation about this oddly "lost" novel.) A sequel to the film, JANIE GETS MARRIED, appeared in 1946, with a similarly evasive credit: "based on characters created in the play." (It's also interesting to note -- although I can't say what significance to attach to it, if any -- that this particular copy was once the property of the Story Department at a different movie studio (Paramount) than the one that produced the two films.) .

Publisher's pinkish-tan cloth with dark brown stamping on spine and front cover; illustrated jacket, notched as issued (but unclipped), in tan and metallicized gold. Book Near Fine: seemingly barely read; normal age-browning to pastedowns.  Jacket Very Good: slight abrasions to edges, two short closed tears on rear near top of spine-fold. First Edition. Valenti Angelo (1897-1982), whose work is highly prized among graphic artists and collectors, was born in Massarossa, in Tuscany, and immigrated to the U.S. at the age of 8. After a period in New York City, he settled in California where he became a leading engraver and printer, specializing in the linocut as a medium, and in evocative Southwestern night and desert scenes. In San Francisco he worked with the celebrated Grabhorn Press. Nino, his first book for children, received the Newbery Honor in 1939. In Golden Gate, Angelo provides a sequel to the earlier autobiographical Nino, in which he had recreated his very youngest years in Tuscany. Golden Gate restarts the story of his childhood after the American arrival.
