Description
Paris: Léon Pichon, 1921. Edition Nouvelle. No. 353 OF 967 COPIES. 283 x 222 mm. (11 1/8 x 8 3/4"). 180, [1] pp. (colophon). Publisher's brown paper wrappers, uncut edges (spine and fore edges very neatly reinforced with Japanese rice paper). In a (slightly scuffed) marbled paper slipcase. With 105 woodcut head- and tailpieces, woodcut initials, and printer's device by Hermann-Paul. Half title page and title page printed in red and black as are the initials, chapter headings printed in red. ◆Occasional faint offsetting from woodcuts, otherwise a fine copy internally, in a solid and very clean binding. Striking Modernist woodcuts by French artist René Georges Hermann-Paul enliven our edition of this comic masterpiece, in which Rabelais (ca. 1494-1553) uses the giant Gargantua and his son Pantagruel to satirize scholastic education, the monastic system (which Rabelais knew from his time as a monk), the papacy, French magistrates, and considerably more. Hermann-Paul (1864-1940) was a French artist who produced a great many illustrations for magazines and newspapers, and his works of fine art found themselves displayed in galleries next to those by some of the great names of the Impressionist age..

OGAWA, colotypes.. 32mo oblong(4 3/8" x 5 ½"); [20pp]; stiff illustrated wrapper printed in grey and yellow, iris flowers to front, crying moon to rear; purple silk cord tie binding; all edges gilt; 8 colotype photographic illustrations in b&w, 3 with tissue guard; light soiling to wrapper; very good plus. One part of a scarce set of two books, the other titled: Fair Japan, Optimistic. A poem by Helmuth (1833-1902) is printed on the first two pages, subsequent pages present an illustration, many of malnourished and naked children, with lines from the poem on the facing page. Truly a Pessimistic look at Japan. William Tod Helmuth was a professor of surgery, dean of the faculty and a trustee of the New York Homoeopathic Medical College and Hospital. While Dr. Helmuth wrote scientific books, he also published poetry and stories based on his travel.
