San Francisco: The Arion Press, 1982. Limited Edition. Hardcover. New. Dine, Jim. Folio, 14 7/8" by 11 inches, 64 unnumbered pages. The type is Garamond Bold, in Monotype composition by Mackenzie-Harris, with 14 point for the words ascribed to St. John and 18 point for words ascribed to God and the angels, with Hadriano for verse numbers and Stempel Garamond Titling for display. The paper is French handmade Apta Velin from the Richard de Bas Mill, printed damp. The binding, done in-house, is hand-sewn on a concertina and attached to oak plywood boards, with a white alum-tawed pigskin spine. The title is blind-stamped on the spine and a lightening bolt printed on both boards. Edition of 150 copies, plus 15 hors de commerce. Signed by Jim Dine. The Revelation of Saint John the Divine, the last book of the New Testament from the King James Version of the Bible, with 29 woodblock prints, signed by Jim Dine on the title page. This was the second artist book of the Arion Press, after "A Travel Book" (No. 4), and the first in a series of collaborations with internationally known contemporary artists. It was the beginning of a long partnership between Jim Dine and Hoyem that has resulted in nine books containing original prints. The text was broken into poetic lines, set in two sizes of type to differentiate the speakers. The prints were titled with excerpts from the text. For wood blocks, the publisher supplied the artist with oak boards cut to 11 3/4 inches by 8 3/4 inches, the size of the text block, and milled to type height. But when the artist ran out of the supplied wood, he used any wood that came to hand, including his wife's cutting board and a piece from a lumber pile that was badly cracked and warped, neither of these pieces being type high. The printer managed with careful make-ready and by modifying the ink roller height. Please note that this volume is one of the 15 hors de commerce copies, and is stated as "Press Copy"; in addition to Dine's signature, Andrew Hoyem has signed at the colophon. Also note that, while this copy is new, there is a slight defect to the wood of the front board (a very shallow depression) in the printed lightening bolt. ___POSTAGE: Please note that this is an unusually large and heavy item and additional postage may apply; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Description
New York: Oxford University Press, 2001. 1st Printing. Soft Cover. Near Fine. 6x1x10. First printing. An excellent copy. Binding tight and square, pages clean, bright, and unmarked. 2001 Soft Cover. xix, 578 pp. The Vietnam War was the defining event of recent U.S. history, a tragic struggle that cost the lives of 58,000 Americans and 970,000 Vietnamese. The three-volume Encyclopedia of the Vietnam War, edited by Spencer Tucker, has been hailed as the most comprehensive reference work on that watershed event. Now Tucker has produced an abridged one-volume edition, a miracle of concision that includes virtually all the entries found in the parent volume, in condensed form. Here are more than 900 alphabetically arranged entries--plus over 200 primary source documents--that illuminate every aspect of the Vietnam War. There are entries on Buddhists, defoliation, post-traumatic stress disorder, the fall of Ngo Dinh Diem, and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The volume covers military and domestic fronts; air, land, and sea campaigns and battles; weapons, strategies, and tactics; key Vietnamese and American figures; the anti-war movement and international repercussions of the war; and the impact of the war on film, art, literature, and society. The volume also includes important background information, such as the developments that led to U.S. involvement in the war and postwar Vietnamese history to the present. Tucker provides extensive coverage of both American and Vietnamese perspectives, and has incorporated numerous entries by Vietnamese contributors.
