Description
1939. First Edition. WHITE, Terence Hanbury. The Sword in the Stone. London: Collins, 1938. Octavo, original gilt-stamped black cloth, original dust jacket. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $7000.First edition of the original version of White's playful and profound tale of King Arthur's youth, illustrated with numerous linecuts by the author. To craft his charming story of ""The Wart,"" the boy who is—unknown to anyone except his magical tutor, Merlyn— the future king of England, White drew inspiration more from his own experiences as a schoolmaster than from Malory's Morte d'Arthur. He also confessed in a letter that he wrote ""about what he would have liked to have happened to him when he was a boy"" (Gallix, 16). ""The characterizations are exceptionally fine and the story has a perfect blend of humor and sentimentality"" (Anatomy of Wonder 5-318). ""Few would deny its romance and humanity"" (An English Library, 56). ""One of the finest children's fantasies of the 20th century"" (Clute & Grant, 1010-11). White substantially revised the book for its 1958 inclusion in The Once and Future King. In 1963, Disney released an animated adaptation. Gallix A10. Currey, 430. See Cawthorn & Moorcock, Fantasy 100 Best 54. Book fine, dust jacket very good with light wear to edges, one small chip to top edge of front panel, closed tear to rear panel, mild toning to spine.

Description
Albany: Charles R. and George Webster, 1804. First edition. Very Good +. Printed paper self wrappers. 122 x 204 mm. 24 pp., complete. Front wrapper partially loose from binding, but still holding. A remarkably fresh copy overall despite some foxing to last couple leaves. A clean and fresh copy, Very Good+ The killing of Ezekiel Crane by John Delaware (sometimes written as Delaware John or John the Delaware) took on a somewhat legendary quality in the mid- to late-nineteenth century, and the accounts of the killing that we could locate are colored with sensationalistic details. The basic facts, shared by most accounts, seem to be that John, a Native man of the Delaware (Lenape) tribe, and George Phadoc, a white man, agreed to share a hunting cabin near Cayuga Lake in New York in the winter of 1803. After John was less successful in his hunt than Phadoc, John intended to attack Phadoc when he returned to the cabin one day. John's neighbor, Ezekiel Crane, chose that day to pay a visit to the hunting cabin, and John accidentally shot him instead, believing him to be Phadoc. According to later histories of Cayuga County, John's killing of Crane was the first recorded murder in the county. Notably, John was living on the historic lands of the Lenape just twenty-five years after his tribe had recently been forced to relocate. The Lenape had lived along the Delaware River in what is now New Jersey and New York, but were forced to cede their lands when they signed a treaty with the United States in 1778 (becoming the first tribe to sign such a treaty with the new nation). They relocated first to Ohio, eventually settling in groups across Wisconsin, Oklahoma, and parts of Canada. John's personal refusal to leave his home, despite the pressure of the treaty, plays a key role in Rev. Woodruff's sermon. Woodruff explicitly references the removal of the Lenape from their lands ("The very spot on which we stand, was lately occupied by a savage tribe!") and blames the killing, essentially, on John's inability to assimilate with the Christian population. Woodruff frames John as a heathen who has refused to accept the influence of his Christian neighbors, and claims that John, after killing Phadoc, had broader plans to "take the life of every white brother" in the area. Woodruff's argument is clear: the Native people who still lived among white Christians in Cayuga County were a threat, motivated by heathenism and racial hatred, and Woodruff uses John's act of violence to justify the removal of Native people from their lands. Later retellings of the story echo these sensational aspects of John's story, taking Woodruff's rhetoric and building on it. The account in J.O. Noyes' The Lakes and Legends of Central New-York (1857) claims that the other remaining members of the Lenape tribe planned to carry out a massacre against white residents while they were distracted by the hanging. Noyes also claims that John had "ideas of necromancy" in mind when planning to kill Phadoc; other nineteenth-century accounts accused him of "witchcraft" and insanity. Other than a few sensationalized retellings of the story framed as myths and ghost stories, however, we could find few records of John, his crime, and his execution. This item, then, is a scarce record of the event, and a view into the rhetoric that white Christians used to justify the removal of Native people from their land. Very Good +.

Description
England, 1876. Very good. 4to. Notebook ruled in plummet, containing 79 pp. of very neat written text (the remaining pages blank). Laid in are 4 additional leaves with 7 epitaphs written by other hands (see below). Bound and/or sold by by Abraham Johnson, Stationer, Hull: original flexible black roan, comb-marbled endpapers, marbled edges (extremities worn, internally excellent). PURE ENGLISH ANTIQUARIANISM: A VICTORIAN MANUSCRIPT COLLECTION OF MORE THAN 100 EPITAPHS FROM ALL OVER THE UNITED KINGDOM AND IRELAND. Included are transcriptions of obscure epitaphs from tiny village cemeteries and remote areas, many of which do not appear in published sources. The epitaphs are highly eclectic; whereas only small percentage are assigned to named persons, all are localized with the names of specific parishes, villages, towns or cities from where they were collected. Some epitaphs are dated, the earliest being 1598 (Spencer's tomb in Westminster), the latest 1875-1876 (Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire). Indeed, portions of the manuscript were almost compiled "in the field" and not merely copied from published collections of facetious ephitaphs that were enormously popular in the 19th century among antiquarians and "common readers" alike. For instance, following the nine sequential examples recorded at Cleethorpes cited above, there are eleven at Edington, Wilts; eight at Spital Cemetery, Aberdeen; eleven at Old Houff, Dundee; and six at the Constitution Burying Ground, Dundee (which was destroyed in 1963 and replaced with a multi-storey carpark, the bodies having been re-interred within the common ground in the Eastern Cemetery). The present MS was written on laid paper watermarked "J. Allen & Sons Superfine 1873." It is possible that the text was "crowd-sourced." Laid in are 4 sheets of different types of paper, on which were written 7 epitaphs by different hands. One of the sheets records an epitaph dated 1877. The collection ranges from the poignant ("Her life was short, her death severe") to charmingly "everydays epitaph" such as the following examples selected by us (almost) at random: "My name it was Nathaniel Frier I loved and laughed but now I'm here. Such as I am - such you must be Then make your grave & follow me..." -- Elshaw, Northants. "Here lies John Higley, whose Father & Mother were doomed on their passage from America. Had both lived they would have been buried here." -- Belturbet, Ireland. "Neath this stone Jack Webber lies, Rich as Croesus, as Solomon wise. He lived a Fool and died the same. Happy are they who live & die like him." -- Steepleton (about four miles from Blandford, Dorset. NB: this same epitaph was copied by George Parker and published in the Hampshire Antiquary and Naturalist, 1891, vol. I, p. 23, but with significant variants in the text. Which one is correct?) "My wife she's dead & here she lies There's nobody laughs and nobody cries. Where she's gone and how she fares Nobody knows and nobody cares." -- Stepney "Sacred to the memory of Miss Martha Gwynn, Who was so very pure within, She burst the outer shell of sin, And hatched herself a cherubim." -- St. Albans, Herts. "Shall wee all die? Wee shall die all. All die shall wee? Die all wee shall." -- Gunwallow, near Helston, Cornwall (population in 2011, including the parish of Berepper: 219). "Stranger! pass on nor idly waste your time On bad biography nor bitter rhyme For what I am this cumberous clay ensures But what I was is no affair of yours." -- Peterborough. Highly curious.

Description
York, PA: Strength & Health Publishing Co, 1940. First Edition. First printing. Octavo. Card wrappers; portrait frontispiece; 320pp. Clean, tight, and unfaded - an attractive copy, Near Fine and quite unusual thus. Hoffman (1898-1985) served on the front in France as a lieutenant in Company A of the 111th Infantry; his memoir provides perhaps the best first-hand account of the American engagement at Hill 204 in Chateau Thierry in May, 1918. Hoffman went on to become an important American entrepreneur, the founder of York Barbell Co. in Pennsylvania and the acknowledged guru of American bodybuilding through the 1960s. This memoir, issued under the imprint of Hoffman's own publishing company, has long been a sought-after work, never common thanks no doubt to the rather mediocre production quality. This is easily the nicest copy we have seen, free of the usual toning and wear. No hardcover issue was produced for sale.

Blue cloth boards lettered in black on spine and front cover; dustjacket; 274pp. Tight, Near Fine copy in a crisp, clean dustwrapper, Near Fine but for a spot of erosion at crown of spine panel. Collection of five scholarly lectures by the Scots-American classicist and historian of ideas, long-time head of the Department of Philosophy at The University of Michigan. Of the five works included, only the title essay - on the classical origins of modern Anarchist thought - deals directly with contemporary political movements. Not uncommonly for the period, the author conflates "anarchism" with other nominally "utopian" movements including socialism and communism. The collection includes four other essays on the subjects of Psychology, Education, and Classical Philosophy. A somewhat hard-to-find title in any condition, but truly scarce in dustwrapper.

47 pp. Small 8vo (169 x 102 mm.), modern marbled boards, gilt title on spine. [Paris: 1747]. A scarce and early auction catalogue dispersing a substantial collection of paintings belonging to a “Baron de Banckheim,” possibly a fictitious provenance. We also do not know the expert in charge of this sale, but we do see that they borrowed heavily from the celebrated catalogues of the leading art dealer of the time, Edme François Gersaint (1694-1750). The foremost scholar on Gersaint, Guillaume Glorieux, writes that a number of catalogues of this period plagiarized the authoritative biographies of artists composed by Gersaint. This catalogue offers 121 paintings, many of which are thoroughly described, with measurements provided. Most of the pictures are by Dutch and Flemish artists, such as J. van Ruisdael, Jordaens, Hondius, G. van Honthorst, etc. Nice copy. With the engraved bookplate of G[eorges] P[annier] (1853-1944), the Parisian art dealer and collector of early art auction catalogues, on the front paste-down; and stamp of the Bibliothèque Heim and the ownership inscription of “Simonet expert 1857,” both on the first page. ❧ Lugt 662. Description
(PORNOGRAPHIC WATERCOLORS). Album. 9pgs. 7 x 5. No date [circa 1950s]. Cleveland. A scrapbook of nine pornographic watercolors, probably dating from the 1950s. On the back of the last page is a pencil note, Drawn by an artist named Ganzman of Cleveland. Without giving away too many details, the illustrations concern a relationship between Elsie May and Zeke, and the drawings get more obscene as the book progresses. Finally, Elsie Mays father, a farmer, shows up with a shotgun on the last page. Based on the misspellings, the artist either wasnt a native English speaker or a poor speller. I do not believe this is the work of a teenage boy. The scrapbook is held together by two clasps and the edges have some wear and folds.

The 1830 separation of Venezuela from Nueva Granada and the resultant breakup of Gran Colombia created numerous diplomatic headaches such as boundary settlements, treaty negotiations, and debt/credit resolutions that had once been shared.
