Description
[Bordeaux, ca. first quarter of the 19th century?]. Oblong octavo album with 58 tipped-in pen & ink drawings, 55 of them using a combination of detailed landscapes, architecture, interiors, and stick figures to depict various scenes from classical times, the Bible, and European history, accompanied by 8 pages of a manuscript, titled "Explications des dessins-Énigmes," being a key to the illustrations and describing the moments depicted, in French. Contemporary cloth backed boards, sewing weak but holding, mounted paper with some occasional spotting but the illustrations largely fine, text gathering toned with some shallow chipping but no loss to text. From the library of Apollonie de la Rochelambert (1803-1893). From our colleague Nina Musinsky who was as baffled by this as we are: "The work of a single anonymous artist, the drawings show the stick figures in action within villages, cityscapes, well-defined landscapes, or interiors. Overall, our draftsman paid careful attention to architectural and geographical accuracy: in the scene of St. Helena identifying the true cross, for example, Jerusalem with its temple and walls is visible on its ridge in the background (22); Notre Dame towers in the distance in no. 3, depicting the assassination of Henri III, and no. 8, of Moses being saved from the waters, displays a landscape dotted with pyramids and palm trees." Attention is paid also to details such as the arms on flags to provide context to the guesser. The stick figures themselves are minimalistic to the extreme with only the occasional detailing of the heads. Given the quality of the rest of the work, this is clearly a deliberate abstraction, possibly to avoid depictions of gore when showing scenes of assassination, torture, beheadings, and suicides, to make the images palatable for children who might use the book for play and instruction. The images were produced on loose sheets, with many types of paper used, some with the shadow of an aborted image on the versos, and then were tipped in, possibly by a second individual. Each puzzle image appears to be produced by the same hand, as are two of the landscape drawings that do not coincide with the theme of the book, but one image is produced in pencil, in a much smaller format and on wove paper, depicting what appears to be the Château de la Brède from the Bordeaux region of France. This, plus the identification of the watermarks of F. Jardel and Lacoste, as determined by Ms. Musinsky, place the production of the album somewhere around Bordeaux. As for dating, the latest of the scenes depict the story of the Chevalier d'Assas, who in 1760 came across an enemy group of English, and defied the bayonets at his breast to utter a cry of alarm; "To me, Auvergne! Here is the enemy!" The use of wove paper in many illustrations likely means that at least some of the images could have been produced later than 1770. The lack of any reference to the French Revolution raises the question of whether the album was produced before that, but given the fact that it has until recently been in the library of a French noble who's family was driven into exile, there may also be a political reason for why the topic was omitted. In all, an enigmatic, slightly surreal album interesting for its style, artistic accuracy, and its pedagogical approach to history.

Description
Lyons J. de Tournes & G. Gazeau, 1556. Sm. 8vo., full green morocco with a pair of double gilt fillet borders trapping a beaded border; floral gilt corner fleurons; the spine is decorated in a Greek key design, without titling. A.e.g. over red staining, printed floral endpapers. A handsome, unsophisticated binding of indeterminate age in fine condition.Ruth Mortimer points out that this series of 113 woodcuts was designed for the first de Tournes-Gazeau edition of 1547, and continued in use into the seventeenth century. The subjects were freely adapted from the Paris blocks--either directly or through Lyons copies used in editions by Jacques Moderne in 1544 and 1545—with considerable skill in added detail. The series is attributed to BERNARD SALOMON and are considered, "the most skillful of the Alciati interpretations."The Hofer-Harvard copy Ms. Mortimer describes is the 1580 sixth de Tournes edition. Our edition contains EXCELLENT IMPRESSIONS of the blocks and wide margins except for the title-page border which is closely trimmed along the right edge with minimal loss. Lower right corner of the first two leaves restored from the verso with a small ink addition to the border. UNCOMMON IN ANY EDITION, just one copy shows up in auction records for the past twenty-six years.See also: Cartier vol. 2. Brunet I, p. 148 (1547 edition only). Praz p. 6 (1547 edition). Description
1850. This is a complete set Dickens's annual "Extra Christmas Numbers" -- all nine of HOUSEHOLD WORDS, followed by all nine of ALL THE YEAR ROUND. London: Dec. 1850 - Dec. 1858 and Dec. 1859 - Dec. 1867. Original self-wrappers (first 13 numbers) and original blue printed wrappers (last five numbers) -- as issued. First Editions of all eighteen pieces. Dickens was the editor (or "conductor") of both of these periodicals -- one rising out of the ashes of the other -- but he also wrote at least part of the Christmas story in each of these eighteen numbers. The stories in HOUSEHOLD WORDS are: 1850 ("A Christmas Tree" is by CD) 1851 ("What Christmas is, as we Grow Older" is by CD) 1852 A ROUND OF STORIES ("The Poor Relation's Story" and "The Child's Story" are by CD) 1853 ANOTHER ROUND OF STORIES ("The Schoolboy's Story" and "Nobody's Story" are by CD) 1854 THE SEVEN POOR TRAVELLERS ("The First Poor Traveller" and "The Road" are by CD) 1855 THE HOLLY-TREE INN ("The Guest," "The Boots" and "The Bill" are by CD; the rest is by Wilkie Collins) 1856 THE WRECK OF THE GOLDEN MARY (most of "The Wreck" plus the hymn on p. 21 are by CD; the rest is by Wilkie Collins) 1857 THE PERILS OF CERTAIN ENGLISH PRISONERS (chapters I and III are by CD; chapter II is by Wilkie Collins) 1858 A HOUSE TO LET ("Going into Society" is by CD) The stories in ALL THE YEAR ROUND are: 1859 THE HAUNTED HOUSE ("The Mortals in the House," "The Ghost in Master B's Room" and "The Ghost in the Corner Room" are by CD -- as well as all but one of the other opening paragraphs) 1860 A MESSAGE FROM THE SEA (chapters I, II and V, plus passages in other chapters, are by CD; the rest is by Wilkie Collins) 1861 TOM TIDDLER'S GROUND (chapters I, VI and VII are by CD) 1862 SOMEBODY'S LUGGAGE (the first, second, part of the third, seventh and tenth chapters are by CD) 1863 MRS. LIRRIPER'S LODGINGS (chapters I and VII are by CD) 1864 MRS. LIRRIPER'S LEGACY (chapters I and VII are by CD) 1865 DOCTOR MARIGOLD'S PRESCRIPTIONS (chapters I, VI and VIII are by CD) 1866 MUGBY JUNCTION (the first four chapters are by CD -- as indicated on the front cover) 1867 NO THOROUGHFARE (the Overture, Act III, and parts of Acts I and IV are by CD; the rest is by Wilkie Collins, listed as co-author) All eighteen numbers are in very good-plus or near-fine condition, with only very minor edge-wear and soil (though the 1851 issue has a couple of closed tears on the front wrapper and an ink-mark on the rear). Five of the numbers (HhW 1854 through 1858) still have unopened leaves; a few appear that they might once have been bound up (though not trimmed or anything). They are housed in a modern cloth case with inner chemise. Though the last five numbers (the ones in blue wrappers) are not uncommon, the others have become rather scarce; it is now quite unusual to encounter a complete collection of all eighteen. Eckel pp 193-197 ("In good state they [a complete set] are hard to find" -- this in 1932!).

Description
1901. New York: McClure, Phillips & Co., 1901. Original tan cloth pictorially decorated in black, orange and gilt. First Edition of the first collaboration between Conrad and Hueffer -- a tale that combines science fiction with political satire, somewhat in the same vein as had recently been popularized by H. G. Wells. This is regarded as Conrad's only science fiction tale -- though the work is largely Hueffer's. The "I" narrator is Etchingham Granger, a writer of impeccable pedigree whose fortunes are none too good and who is forced to take on several disagreeable commercial assignments. Early on, he meets an extremely attractive young lady who is a "Fourth Dimensionist." This tribe of "new people" -- there is a dystopian pattern here -- lacks feelings and normal or human responses. They, and she, are dedicated to becoming the inheritors of the earth because of their superiority in intellect, control and deception. In particular, they plan to undermine public confidence in its institutions, which turns out to be fairly easy given the nature of the men who govern. The political satire lies here: everyone has a price and everyone is self-serving regardless of the seriousness of the issues. There is no "public policy" among public men. [Karl] For copyright reasons the American edition was published first; the English edition was then produced from the American plates, and was published about five weeks later. This is the usual first published state, with the cancel dedication leaf (there exist about six known copies with the uncorrected error "To Boys and Christina"). This copy has the binding in the preferred state, with the front cover sky in gilt rather than uncolored (priority uncertain, but the few pre-publication copies have this gilt sky). The volume is in near-fine condition, with very little soil or wear; the spine atypically is not darkened. Supino A6.2.0, binding state A (this copy, with his notation on the front endpaper); Cagle A6a.2, binding a. Housed in a (moderately scuffed) morocco-backed slipcase with inner chemise. Provenance: bookplates of (1) the literary editor Silas Orrin Howes, (2) E.E. Taylor, (3) Sherman Flint, and (4) the Conrad bibliographer David J. Supino.

Description
Padova & Paris: Biblioteca Capitolare; Les Belles Lettres, 1987. FACSIMILE REPRODUCTION. Reproduction in photographic facsimile of manuscript D39 of the Capitolare Library of Padova. Soft vellum binding leather laces in imitation of the original. A fine copy. This is a facsimile of MS D39, the manuscript of Dondi’s Tractatus astrarii in the Biblioteca Capitolare in Padova. This facsimile was issued with a separate text volume, which is not present. Both were limited to 500 copies printed. The Astrarium was a complex astronomical clock built between 1348 and 1364 in Padova, Italy, by the doctor and clock-maker Giovanni Dondi dall'Orologio. The Astrarium had seven faces and 107 moving parts; it showed the positions of the sun, the moon and the five planets then known, as well as religious feast days. It was one of the first mechanical clocks to be built in Europe. Dondi documented the Astrarium in detail in the Tractatus astrarii. In the introduction, Dondi writes that his machine was built in accordance with the 13th-century Theorica planetarum of Campano di Novara, and to demonstrate the validity of the descriptions of the motion of heavenly bodies of Aristotle and Avicenna. The Tractatus survives in twelve manuscript sources. The autograph in the Biblioteca Capitolare of Padova (MS. D39) and a copy of it, also in Padova, are certainly the work of Dondi. The other sources are rewritten versions of the autograph, to which Dondi's contribution is as yet unclear. The last known description dates back to 1529, when Emperor Charles V arrived in Italy. Giovanni Dondi describes its construction in a treaty, and it was thanks to this original text that it was possible to rebuild the astrarium in 1963. The autograph manuscript was published in 1987 in a critical edition with colour facsimile and French translation by Emmanuel Poulle as the first volume of the Opera omnia of Jacopo and Giovanni Dondi.
