Description
New Berlin, PA: Joseph Miller, 1828. Full Description: RISHEL, Jonas. The Indian Physician, Containing a New System of Practice, Founded on Medical Plants. Together with a Description of Their Properties, Localities and Method of Using, and Preparing Them. A Treaties on the Causes and Symptoms of Diseases, Which are Incident to Human Nature, with a Safe and Sovereign Cure for them and the Mode oe Treatment, in any Stage of Disease. For the Use of Families and Practitioners of Medicine. New Berlin, PA: Joseph Miller, 1828. First edition. Twelvemo (6 5/8 x 4 inches; 168 x 100 mm). xii, 132, pp. Pages 101-104 bound in upside-down. Contemporary half calf over patterned paper boards. Rubbing to spine, board edges and corners. Some splitting to outer joints, but holding firm. Pages are heavily toned as usual for American paper of this era. Some general soiling and dampstaining throughout. Previous owner's early ink name stamp "M.S. Rissel" to top margin of title-page, and Preface. Previous owner's old ink notes to front free endpaper. Still overall very good. Provenance: The old ink ownership stamp on the top margin of title-page belongs to M.S. Rissel. According to the ink notes on the front free endpaper: The original owner was Michael S. Rissel (1813-1884) of Muncy, PA (about 25 miles from New Berlin), who was a first cousin once removed of the author; they both descended from German immigrant Johann "Hans" Michael Rishell (1712-1759), who died in Lehigh County, PA. In 1887, Michael's widow Julia A. Beeber Rissel (1813-1896) gave the book to her grandson John Harold Kessler (1864-1943). An early Pennsylvania publication on the medicine and healing of Native American tribesby Dr. Jonas Rishel. This text was issued in response to the perceived "inattentiveness of many who profess to prescribe aid to the sick" (page iii). Among the testimonials is a man whose wife nearly died after being treated with large doses of mercury, but was saved by Rishel's "steam and vegetable medicine" (page viii). "Whereas the earliest years of Indian doctoring by non-Indians was very much pragmatic and utilitarian in nature, often practiced due to lack of choice more than lack of tradition, by 1800 the notion of practicing Indian medicine became a popular philosophy for some life styles. During the decade or two that followed, the romanticization of Indian life, countered by the numerous popular press accounts of Indian attacks as well, led to a sensitization of the public to the fate of the Indian and the failing missionary movement to convert Indians to Christians. This social issue would remain a hot topic for years to come. During that time, some people became more sensitized to the Native American tradition and some even became converts in some superficial, symbolic sense, mostly for purposes of display and to earn a living. There are several examples of these individuals who turned to the popular press to sell their unique philosophy and identities." One such book was "The Indian Physician" by Jonas Rishel. (The First "Indian Doctors" Brian Altonen) Shaw & Shoemaker 35045. HBS 69519. $5,000.

Folded and slightly wrinkled, near fine.
Description
New York City, 1845. Two printed pages measuring 9 ¾ x 11 ½ inches, one signed. Folded and slightly wrinkled, near fine.. A circular advertising passage between Great Britain and Ireland and numerous locations in the United States, from Boston to New Orleans, by a regular packet ship service managed by John Herdman and Company. The company also offered remittances, whereby an individual in the US could send money to a friend or relative back across the Atlantic, generally to pay for their passage to the States. The second sheet, a signed letter, offers a commission for finding customers: five percent of the passage fare and one percent of the remittance money. In 1845, the Great Famine in Ireland was just beginning, and Ireland would lose a large proportion of its population not just to starvation but also to emigration. Earning commission on remittances could have been quite lucrative: the National Museum of Ireland estimates that the amount sent back to Ireland in remittances between 1845 and 1854—the height of the famine—reached $19 million.

Description
London: Kegan Paul, Trench & Co, 1883. No. 14 of 50 COPIES OF THE LARGE PAPER EDITION, signed by the printer, Charles Whittingham & Co. 205 x 130 mm. (8 1/8 x 5"). 1 p.l. (limitations), xxiii, [1], 283, [3] pp.Edited by Oswald Crawfurd. QUITE PRETTY CRIMSON MOROCCO, GILT IN AN ART NOUVEAU DESIGN, BY ZAEHNSDORF (stamp-signed in gilt on front turn-in and with the stamped oval, normally marking the firm's best work, on the rear pastedown), covers with two gilt fillet frames enclosing a central panel with five vertical vine sprouting leafy branches and striking Art Nouveau blossoms, smooth spine with elongated compartment containing similar vine, smaller compartment above it with gilt lettering, turn-ins with gilt fillet and leafy branch border, deep red silk endleaves, top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed and almost entirely UNOPENED. Title page printed in black and red. A Large Paper Copy. Spine evenly darkened (with gilt a little dulled), front joint with thin three-inch crack at bottom, isolated trivial foxing to the (vast) margins, but an otherwise fine, mostly unread, copy in a binding with lustrous boards. In an extremely pleasing animated binding by a leading English book binder, this is a special Large Paper Copy printed on high quality paper of a work celebrating comedic playwrights from Shakespeare to Sheridan. The book is comprised of excerpts from some of England's most beloved comedies, including scenes from early works such as Shakespeare's "King Henry IV, Part I," and Jonson's, "The Alchemist"; pieces from the Restoration period, such as Wycherley's "The Plain Dealer" and Farquhar's "The Beaux' Stratagem"; and later comedies of manners, such as Goldsmith's "She Stoops to Conquer" and Sheridan's "School for Scandal." The editor of the work, Oswald Crawfurd (1834-1909) was a career diplomat with a passion for writing. According to DNB, "his literary activity was diverse" and included about 40 fiction and non-fiction volumes as well as essays, poetry, articles, plays, and even a book on Bridge. Born in Pest, Hungary, binder Joseph Zaehnsdorf (1816-86) served his apprenticeship in Stuttgart, worked at a number of European locations as a journeyman, and then settled in London, where he was hired first by Westley and then by Mackenzie before opening his own workshop in 1842. His son and namesake took over the business at age 33, when the senior Joseph died, and the firm flourished under the son's leadership, becoming a leading West End bindery. Over the years, Zaehnsdorf employed a considerable number of distinguished binders, including the Frenchman Louis Genth (who was chief finisher from 1859-84), and trained several others, including Roger de Coverly and Sarah Prideaux. A family-run business until 1947, the Zaehnsdorf bindery has continued to produce consistently attractive and innovative designs executed with unfailing skill. The present binding shows the high quality of finishing typical of Zaehnsdorf work: the tooling is intricate and precise, creating a design that is energetic, yet carefully balanced..
