Description
New York: Vantage Press, 1958. First edition. First edition, first printing of the UFO romance novella written by Constance Weber Menger under a pseudonym. [2], [4, photo insert], [3]-72 pp. Bound in publisher's yellow paper-covered boards lettered in black on the spine. Near Fine, previous owner signature and date '59 to front free endpaper, vintage bookseller ticket to title page. In a Very Good dust jacket, moderately rubbed, toned spine panel with splits along folds mended with archival tissue on verso. The very rare fictionalized account of Connie Menger's romance with the man who was to become her husband. The American contactee Howard Menger claimed that his first encounter with an alien came in 1932, when he was just ten years old. A beautiful blonde space woman wearing a shimmering bodysuit told him that her name was Marla. She returned in 1946, informing Menger that it was his destiny to teach others about outside worlds. After Menger began an affair with a supporter named Connie Weber in the 1950s, he announced that she was the sister of the Marla who had appeared to him in the past. In Connie's science autofiction, Howard, given the pseudonym Alyn, tells her that he is a volunteer from Saturn. "I have been in close contact with my people and people from other planets since I was a child. I have seen their craft in our skies as far back as I can remember. When I was about ten years old, I was wandering through the woods, one day, when I came upon a beautiful Venusian woman, with long blond hair, just like yours....She was like an angel to me, and I loved her very much. When she went away, she told me that someday another like her would come to take her place, and we would be one." After Alyn informs Marla that she is actually from the planet Venus, he overcomes her hesitations and the two become one. Saturnians are great lovers, as the chapter heading informs the reader, and the relationship does wonders for Marla's physical and mental health. The book ends with two songs written by G. H. Van Doren and set to music by Howard R. Menger, who had released an album of "Authentic Music from Another Planet" the previous year. A fascinating and difficult-to-find contribution to UFO lore, illustrated with five photographs depicting Marla, Alyn, a luminescent alien presence, and a flying saucer.

Large octavo, original three-quarter navy morocco gilt rebacked, top edge gilt, uncut. $950.Limited large paper first edition, number 219 of only 250 copies, of this generously illustrated guide to that “great, glorious and unsurpassable,” quintessentially British game of cricket.Henry Somerset, eighth Duke of Beaufort, conceived of the ""Badminton Library"" (named after his principal country house, not the game) as a comprehensive series of instructional guidebooks, presenting history, rules and strategic hints for pastimes popular among Victorian England's aristocracy. Published between 1885 and 1920, ""the books provide a rich source of information on the growth and development of sport during the late 19th century in Britain, and are highly sought after by collectors"" (Nauright & Parrish, Sports Around the World, 33). This volume includes chapters on cricket's history, batting and bowling, captains and umpires, cricket in Australia, ""The University Cricket Match,"" ""Cricket Reform"" and more. Illustrated with 11 full-page engraved plates and numerous in-text woodcuts. Front board gilt-stamped with Beaufort coat of arms. Occasional light foxing and minor creasing. Binding with light expert restoration. Extremely good condition.

Description
Louisiana State University Press, 1944. First Edition. Octavo, gray cloth (hardcover), gilt lettering, x, 401 pp. Fine in a Very Good, mylar protected dust jacket. From dust jacket: From the leaders of every state, from the classes of the planter aristocracy and the self-made immigrant, from the ranks of the wealthy easterner and the rugged frontiersman, from the folds of the Protestant, Catholic, and Jewish churches, Jefferson Davis invited men to enter the cabinet of the Southern Confederacy. As the war progressed, some resigned, others were forced out, and a few remained with Davis to the end. Fourteen men served in the Confederate Cabinet. Together with the President they set Confederate policy and directed its execution. Theirs was the task of winning Southern independence. They failed and, having failed, have not had the spotlight of history focused on them as it has been on the more heroic military leaders of the South. In Jefferson Davis and His Cabinet, all the members of the Confederate administration pass in review. Here are Toombs, Hunter, Walker, Randolph, Seddon, Breckinridge, Benjamin, Memminger, Trenholm, Mallory, Reagan, Bragg, Watts, and George Davis. They are portrayed not only as secretaries, but also as individuals in the war society of Montgomery and Richmond. The picture ends as the Cabinet members fly before the invaders, are captured one by one or escape to a foreign haven. This study of the Cabinet is based on manuscript collections, printed documents, reminiscences, and newspapers as well as the important secondary works...
