Description
Hollywood or New York: United Artists, 1928. Fine. Charles W. Panc (?). Scarce, and especially attractive, movie poster portrait of John Barrymore. This style of poster is called a "Personality Poster", as it is promoting the star as much as any particular film, and movie theaters could re-use the poster in other movies starring the same actor, although here a movie title is given, unlike most Personality Posters. The poster is dominated by a head-on portrait of Barrymore in costume -- the costume being that of an Imperial Russian army officer. The poster is also derived from a painting, or paintings, since there are two smaller pictures, capturing two scenes from the movie in which Barrymore interacts with his love interest played by Camilla Horn. In one of the scenes, the two are fighting; the other, they're embracing. The poster has been reproduced. That said, this is an original, which is rare. The poster, in the upper right, has the name presumably of its artist, but we can't fully make out the surname, and with the letters we have, we haven't been able to figure out who the artist was. John Barrymore is remembered most for playing caricatures of himself as a dissipated middle aged lush, his days as a matinee idol when he was known as the Great Profile past him. The poster shows him as an Adonis still, and in fact the melodramatic movie was a vehicle for him with the story of treachery, love, betrayal, and spitfire plot turns revolving very much around his character. The movie was a Silent in terms of it having no spoken dialogue, but it was accompanied by a rich score. Barrymore would star in one more Silent with co-star Horn before his strong trained speaking voice was finally heard in a movie. With frame, 64 by 44.5 cm. Visible under glass, 59 by 39.5 cm. The frame, which is disposable in our opinion, has some wear. The poster appears to have no issues. We have not examined the poster outside the frame.

Hajdu, Etienne. (Hajdu, Etienne)illus. LE CORPS CLAIRVOYANT. Poems by Jacques Dupin with gauffraged (embossed without inking) abstract prints by Hajdu. copyrighted and published by the collaborators, Paris, 1963. Number 26 of the edition of 65 (there were also 10 copies hors de commerce). Signed by Hajdu and Dupin on the colophon, and also with a presentation inscription on the final blank page to Duncan Philips by Hajdu ("Hommage, Remerciements a/Monsieur et Madame/ Duncan Philips/Etienne Hajdu/Bagneux le 9 Oct. 1964"). Large 4to., red-orange soft morocco folder with one of Hajdu's designs embossed on the front cover, lined with red cloth, containing 20 loose sheets folded in half, with the unnumbered first sheet and the sheets numbered 2, 3 and 16, 17 and 18 being printed with Dupin's poems, and the sheets numbered 4 through 15 with Hajdu's abstract prints (each print is on the full sheet, and can be apprehended as either an embossment, standing up from the surface, or as impressed into the surface, depending on which side of the sheet is being viewed. Sheets 19 and 20 are un-numbered; the 19th sheet is the Colophon; the 20th sheet is blank, except for the inscription noted above. The title sheet and the final blank are browned from exposure to the cloth lining of the folder; the leather is faded and worn at the spine, and there is a 4 inch tear at the bottom where the spine meets the front cover. Housed in a custom clamshell box. Rare and interesting.

Description
Boston: B.B. Russell, 1892. FIRST EDITION. With 7 plates and numerous text illustrations. Publisher’s cloth, title in gilt on front cover and spine; interior very good with only a small stain about the preface. First edition. The author, a practicing physician, has prepared a layperson’s guide to prevention and treatment of sudden injury or illness. Introductory remarks include a very basic explanation of the pulse, respiration, delirium, inflammation, symptoms and signs of fever, and patent medicines. The book treats specific injuries, sudden attacks, painful and longer-term attacks and common ailments, including colds, skin disease, and insomnia, as well as many others. One chapter is devoted to diseases of infancy and childhood. Each of the treatment descriptions are plain-spoken and very straight-forward. Of particular interest is the author’s discussion of what medicines a family might have around the house and their use. The late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries found a number of home remedy and domestic medicine texts that became available to the public, especially as a response to a plethora of quack doctors proclaiming the efficacy of their quack medicines. This work appears to be quite scarce, with OCLC citing 5 copies in America and 1 in Israel. Bradford (1835-1904) received his medical degree at Harvard, and practiced at Mechanic Falls in Maine. Cordasco 90-0628.

Amsterdam: Wetstenios & Smith, 1732. FOURTH EDITION. Contemporary stiff vellum, yapp edges, manuscript spine title, red edges. Somewhat browned, but a good copy. Fourth edition of this influential work on forensic medicine, the book that introduced legal autopsies. The author distinguishes between intentional and accidental deadly wounds and describes procedures for postmortem wound analysis. First published in 1689, this treatise represents an important practical intersection between medicine and law. Johannes Bohn (1640-1718) was a German physician and legal authority. Although he wrote many scientific texts, his will stipulated that they be burned upon his death. This is one of two books that survived. Madea, Handbook for Forensic Medicine 10.

Taichung City: Taiwan Museum of Art 台灣省立美術館, 1989. Very Good. Taichung City: Taiwan Museum of Art, 1989. This is the second printing from March of 1989 of the catalog first published in June of 1988. Quarto (slipcase 35.5x26.5x4.5cm; volume 34x26x4cm); 430pp. Densely illustrated in color throughout. Text almost entirely in Chinese and intended for Chinese usage; official introductory statements and a few minor technical matters in parallel English. Uncommon in retail. Illustrated slipcase with black and gold lettering. Illustrated volume boards duplicate the slipcase visually. Slipcase shows rubbing to upper and lower edges (visible in our photographs) but remains very solid. Volume itself shows signs of reverent handling, with a slight yellowing to lower half of rear panel (inexplicable, given the slipcase). Binding and textblock otherwise unmarred and unmarked. This is the catalog of the exhibition which opened in 1988 the then Taiwan Provincial Museum of Art, now conventionally Anglicized as the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts. Subsections are: Chinese Traditional Paintings; Glue Painting; Oil Painting; Watercolor; Print Art; Calligraphy; and Sculpture. The exhibition, seeking to establish an art tradition of its own for Taiwan (as opposed to that of the mainland), is full of surprises. Paintings and sculptures veer from 19th century illustrative realism (somewhere between Tissot and N.C. Wyeth) to modernist abstraction. Revered Chinese traditions are intermingled with Taiwanifications of everything you ever saw in your History of Western Art class. A fascinating snapshot of cultural and geo-political transmission, homage, and assertive independence.

Description
[Chicago]: [The Zippies], 1972. Original silkscreen poster printed in blue on white cardboard stock. Measures 53x44 cm (21" x 17.5"). Very Good with some light horizontal creasing, slightly curled. A rare poster produced for a rock benefit concert held at Chicago's I.W.W. Hall for the Zippies, the short-lived radical offshoot of the Yippies that emerged as enthusiasm for disruptive pranks and provocative behavior waned with the dawning of the '70s and the gradual enfranchisement of key Yippies. The Zippies zeal for disruption was such that many contemporaries suspected they were a faction of agents provocateur. The poster illustration features a flying eyeball similar to Rick Griffin's design for his famous Bill Graham Jimi Hendrix poster (BG-105). Performers included proto-punks David Peel & the Lower East Side, glam band Teenage Lust, Evil, and Armadillo.

In her account she stated that the Abenakis killed her newborn baby soon after they were captured. While detained on an island in the Merrimack River in present-day Boscawen, New Hampshire, she killed and scalped ten of the Abenaki family members holding them hostage, with the assistance of two other captives.
