Description
[West Point Military Academy], 1850-1854. As accomplished.. Very good with some feint light spotting (inoffensive). Original watercolor and gouache rendering within a thick black border line, on a sheet measuring appx. 590 x 880 mm.; thick, cream colored, watercolor paper stock. A large, appealing, and impressive engineering drawing signed by cadet John Radcliff Smead (class of 1854) who upon graduation went to New Mexico. J R Smead was the son of Raphael Smead who was an instructor in mathematics during 1825/26 at the academy. The elder Smead left to take up duties in the regular army and died of yellow fever in 1848 returning from the Mexican War. D H Mahan (DAB XII, 209-210) was appointed prof. of engineering at West Point in 1832. Mahan had studied for years in France and was, at the time, in possession of the finest engineering education available. His appointment at West Point allowed him to establish and shape the course of instruction for the next half century. At the time of his employ it was his responsibility to educate the cadets in everything that pertained to the study of engineering. Over the course of his career he wrote about a dozen textbooks that became the "bibles" of engineering studies in America. It is not possible to over estimate his impact on the study of the engineering sciences in United States. The watercolor rendering offered here is no doubt the result of a student assignment; executed in an accomplished fashion to a high standard.

Description
1857. Near Fine. A one-page flyer promoting a new school, one to be opened less than a week after the date of the announcement. From the announcement, it would seem that the school was to initially have just a single instructor, called the Principal, but we can't be sure of that. The school was taking students of all ages, with a cost per quarter running from $10 to $14, the greater amount required for students 14 and older, and extra charges imposed for the instruction of modern languages, which ones, not specified, but given in the plural, and for drawing. And food and "fuel" would also be an extra $.75. What is meant by "fuel" we can only guess! At the bottom are a list of a dozen references, these from private schools and universities, including West Point and Union College. The description of the instruction is mostly vague, but a point is made that discipline would be of a moral, not physical, kind, and there would be a brief religious exercise each day but that the school was to be non-sectarian. Measuring 20 by 12.5 cm. Other than one light stray ink line, clean.

Inspired by issues raised during War of 1812, this treatise by one of the great scholars of international law examines the complicated subject of maritime captures. "Wheaton on Captures is a valuable Treatise, a work to which I freely confess my obligations." (Duer cited in Marvin). Wheaton [1785-1848] was a distinguished attorney, diplomat and author. "Mr. Wheaton's early familiarity with the jurisprudence and foreign relations of the United States, his long experience in diplomacy, his intimate acquaintance with European languages and foreign diplomatic writers, entitles his writings upon International Law to more than ordinary consideration. His works enjoy the highest reputation for the soundness of their views, and the learning and research displayed in illustrating the various topics discussed.": Marvin, Legal Bibliography (1847) 727-728.
