Description
New York: George P. Putnam, 1852. First Edition. Very good. 12mo. 180 pp. (text with usual blemishes and signs of age and use, some top corners at one time folded by one or more readers). Original publisher's black cloth, blocked in blind, spine gilt, pale brown endpapers (corners bumped and worn, endcaps chipped off, binding a little skewed). Early ownership inscriptions in ink on front flyleaf (see below), Working Men's College bookplate with library regulations on front pastedown, corresponding ink stamp on title-page (SEE IMAGES). A very good, unsophisticated copy. THE FIRST PUBLISHED WORK BY ELIZABETH BLACKWELL, M.D. WHO WAS ONE OF THE MOST INSPIRING AND MOST INFLUENTIAL PHYSICIANS OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY. Blackwell (1821-1910) received international attention in 1849 when she earned her degree at Geneva Medical College, thereby becoming the first woman to obtain a medical degree in the United States. At that time women were banned from studying medicine at all American medical schools, and it was only by a fluke that she was admitted to Geneva. Believing that her application for admittance was nothing more than a practical joke, all 150 male students voted to approve her application. Whereas she was duly accepted by the college, for the next three years she faced considerable discrimination and obstacles, such as being forced to sit separately at lectures and often excluded from labs. Nonetheless, she graduated first in her class. Her thesis was on typhoid fever and raised questions about medicine and social and economic justice. Another first: during a trip to England in 1859 she was entered in the medical register of the British General Medical Council, thereby becoming the first woman to do so. "The Laws of Life" is her first published book and consists of lectures delivered to "a class of ladies" as we learn from her Dedication to American Women (p. [5]). The text drew upon her clinical work in London, Paris, and New York City. Blackwell presents the contents of the book as "outlines of Truth and as indications of the right method of education [for women]." She calls attention to the dearth of advanced medical training by and for women, and assails the long-standing position of most male doctors that medical issues afflicting women was simply due to their so-called "nervous diseases." Blackwell champions both moral and physical exercise for women and children; concerning the development of the latter, she condemns the "wretched" educational system of "cramming" for studies which necessitated long hours of standing at a desk. Blackwell is careful not to blame schoolteachers (at this time nearly four out of five schoolteachers were women) but the evil of the educational system itself. For increasing and maintaining the health of girls and women, she emphasizes physical fitness, a healthy diet, and social and domestic stability -- all challenging concepts in her day. In 1851 Blackwell opened a small clinic in New York City to treat impoverished women, but discrimination against female physicians meant few patients. Six years later, in 1857, she opened the New York Infirmary for Indigent Women and Children; its mission included providing training for women physicians (this institution still exists at the NYU Downtown Hospital). Since the women who trained in her Infirmary were not allowed to gain admissions to the male medical colleges, Blackwell opened her own medical college in 1868. She returned to London in 1875 and became a professor of gynecology at the newly established London School of Medicine for Women. Her autobiography " Pioneer Work in Opening the Medical Profession to Women" was published in 1895. "She had battled all her life and her successes had been monumental. She had won the enthusiastic support of some prominent medical figures -- and the grudging acceptance of women into medicine. In 1881, there were only 25 female doctors registered in England and Wales but by 1911 there were 495 registered." (SOURCE: University of Bristol, Elizabeth Blackwell Institute of Health Research, online). PROVENANCE: 1. Inscribed by Dr. Blackwell's first cousin, Samuel Holden Blackwell (1816-1868) of Dudley, Worcestershire, a geologist and owner of several ironworks. 2. JOHN RUSKIN, presented by him to the Working Men's College in November 1858 as is documented in the London Metropolitan Archives (LMA/4535/F/03/01/001 "The Earliest Library Catalogue"). Ruskin was an early proponent of the Christian socialist Working Men's College in London, founded in 1854; he gave regular classes there in its first years (and many books, including this one), and it was through teaching at the College that he met several friends and collaborators, among them Sir Edward Burne-Jones. Description
San Francisco [Oakland]: B. C. Vandall, Publisher [W. B. Hardy, Bookseller and Stationer], 1878. Hardcover. Very good. Octavo size, 756 pp., with the original map lithographed by Grafton Tyler Brown. A somewhat scarce directory, as of this writing we see no copies online (we searched for the years 1875 through 1890) and only two auction records (RBH) neither of those for this exact publication (1878-9). Per Rocq, this year was the first to include the city of Berkeley, having been incorporated on April 4, 1878. Additionally, this volume includes the "Map of Oakland and Alameda" which was lithographed by the highly-regarded African-American artist and lithographer, Grafton Tyler Brown (1841-1918). In the Preface to Robert Chandler's work, "San Francisco Lithographer, African American Artist Grafton Tyler Brown", Chandler states that Brown "was unique, as the only black view maker, lithographer, and oil painter" (p. XIII). As with many city directories of this era, much of the charm is in the multitudinous business advertisements, encouraging potential customers to buy their windmills, wood and coal, ice, pianos and port wine (to name just a few) or take advantage of services offered such as "house, sign and fresco" painting, auctioneering, dressmaking, etc. The volume is comprised of fourteen pages of full- and half-page ads, the title page with the tipped-in map, followed by the Table of Contents and the Index to Advertisers, information on the city of Oakland, the "Official Directory of the County of Alameda", information on the fire department and schools - which includes about two pages on The University of California (which had just been founded in 1868) - and much more. By far the bulk of the volume consists of the actual directories, listing residents by name and including their working occupation and address (e.g., 'Abele M. Mrs., midwife, res 1518 Seventh"). The largest directory is for Oakland, followed by much shorter ones for Berkeley and Alameda, with a Business Directory at the end. ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in paper-covered boards (with printed advertisements) with a brown cloth spine, this lettered and ruled in gilt (including two advertisements), the endpapers also consisting of printed advertisements, the contents as described above; binding octavo size (9" by 6 1/8"), pagination: [14] [folding map] [1-3] 4-728 [2]; not included in the pagination are the paste-down endpapers which are also advertisements, and five sheets of advertisements inserted throughout (two on yellow paper, some in red and black, the most decorated (in black, blue, and red with gilt borders) being for the Pacific Press ("The Leading Printing House...Job Printing, Book Printing, Music Printing, Book-Binding"). ___CONDITION: A solid very good copy overall, externally good plus and internally near fine; the cloth spine clean with some wear at the head, light rubbing at the tail, and one pinpoint hole at the back joint, the paper covering the boards toned, lightly soiled, rubbed at the board edges with some minor wear on the front, the text block edges somewhat foxed and a vintage stamp on the fore-edge for "J.L. Wetmore & Co., Estate House Brokers, Broadway, Oakland" (presumably the owners of this copy), the hinges solid and without any cracked gutters, the first ten leaves or so, and the final few leaves, foxed, the interior pages clean and bright other than the few pages surrounding the inserted advertisements which are also foxed, a few pages dog-eared, the map near fine, clean and with only the original folds, lightly foxed on the verso and a few spots of foxing on the recto, with one short closed tear (approx. three-quarters of an inch) where the map meets the text block and perhaps a pinhole-size tear at the intersection of two of the folds. Overall in better condition than usually found, particularly still with the inserted folding map. ___CITATIONS: Rocq, no. 21; Chandler, p. 199. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note the following: (i) additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs, please inquire for details; and (ii) any taxes, duty, or tariffs charged by your country will, of necessity, be your responsibility. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Description
London: Printed & Sold Longman & Broderip No. 26 Cheapside, & No. 13 Hay Market, 1787. Oblong folio. Disbound. 1f. (recto title, verso blank), [i] (index), 2-45, [i] (blank) pp. Engraved throughout. Overture arranged for keyboard. Scored primarily for voice and figured bass with occasionally fleshed-out keyboard textures and a violin part or parts notated on one staff above the voice. With Arnold's autograph initials to lower inner corner of title. Provenance Noted American harpsichordist Louis Bagger (1926-2024). Occasional soiling, foxing, and small stains; small binder's holes to blank inner margins; blank lower edge of title slightly chipped. First Edition. BUC p. 52. RISM A2261. Inkle and Yarico was first performed in London at Covent Garden on 4 August 1787. One of Arnold's most successful operas, its plot centers on the story of the kindness shown to a white man by a black woman and his subsequent decision to sell her into slavery. The opera was particularly topical as the issue of slavery was under discussion in the British Parliament at the time. "In Ligon's True Exact History of the Island of Barbadoes (1673) there is a story, presumably true and exact, of a beautiful naked Indian girl called Yarico who is got with child and has her baby by the side of a pond. Three hours later, carrying the baby in her arms, she meets a young English merchant running away from some Indian warriors. She hides him in a cave, feeds him, and falls in love with him. When it is safe, he takes her back to his ship and, instead of rewarding her, sells her into slavery. Steele repeated this shocking story in The Spectator (No. 11; 13.3.11), invented the name of Thomas Inkle for the young trader, and made him the baby's father. He only discovers she is with child when he is about to sell her. 'He made use of that Information, to rise in his Demands upon the Purchaser.' Steele rather oddly thought the story 'a Counterpart to the Ephesian Matron' of Petronius, and was moved to tears by the gross ingratitude shown in both stories. We have found several plays and operas that pointed the moral superiority of the savage over the educated European, most notably Polly, but Inkle and Yarico was much the most successful, partly because it was better written, and partly because slavery had suddenly become a national problem. It was well known that during the previous winter two go-ahead young politicians, William Pitt and William Wilberforce, had been having frequent discussions as to how the Slave Trade might be abolished, and those who found it financially rewarding began to prepare their defence. Wilberforce was to have introduced the necessary Bill, but in the spring of 1787 he became seriously ill, and as a stop-gap device Pitt successfully carried a resolution on 9 May that the House should commit itself to a full discussion of slavery early in the next session. The ethics of slavery thus began to be widely debated, and as a result Colman wrote Inkle and Yarico. It was one of our first problem plays." Fiske: English Theatre Music in the Eighteenth Century Second Edition, p. 477. Arnold, an English composer, conductor, organist, and editor, was "the son of Thomas Arnold, a commoner, and, according to some sources, the Princess Amelia (she was certainly his patron). Arnold received his education as a Child of the Chapel Royal (December 1, 1748 to August 31, 1758), where he was occasionally noticed by Handel (something he 'remember'd with delight & spoke of with a starting tear'), and on leaving became known as an organist, conductor, and teacher, and composed prolifically. In autumn 1764 he was engaged by John Beard as harpsichordist and composer to Covent Garden; there he compiled several pastiche operas, including the popular The Maid of the Mill (1765), which is among the supreme examples of the form. ... Statistics show that Arnold's more successful operas, such as The Agreeable Surprise (1781) and Inkle and Yarico (1787), an early anti-slavery opera, were among the most frequently performed of all operas of the time." Robert Hoskins in Grove Music Online.
