Description
Dublin, Ireland: Distillers Press, 2012. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine in Fine Slipcase. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Binding by Tom Duffy, The Five Lamps, Dublin. Hand set in newly cast Garamond (Hand & Eye, London) and Grotesque light and Grot no. 8 (Stephenson & Blake, early 20th century). "This book tells the story of RMS Titanic's ill-fated on board printers, Abraham 'Albert' Mishellany and Ernest Corbin as they travel on the ship's doomed maiden voyage. In his foreword for the book, Irish author Colm Tóibín writes: "As we mark the centenary of the sinking of the Titanic, we are reminded of the amazing gallery of prose and poetry prompted by the events of 1912. However, as well as the passengers, we cannot forget the skilled craftsmen who worked on the ship." The result of two years of research and production, the book includes ink made from coal from the wreck site and the accompanying typeface, 'Horizon' was developed for this project. [Artist Statement] "Working towards his Master's degree at NCAD, Jamie Murphy applied himself to making a book that relates, in visual form, the story of the Titanic's two resident printers. An oceanliner is a world in microcosm, requiring an entire support system and all manner of skills, designers and printers among them. Abraham "Albert" Mishellany and Ernest Corbin designed and printed "the restaurant menus, stationery, note pads, programmes of events" and even the tickets. In the aftermath of the disaster, these ephemera, as with virtually everything associated with the Titanic, became much sought after mementoes and have sold for thousands at auctions. Murphy has commemorated the printers in the medium of linocut, one of the most basic printmaking techniques. The book he has made with the images, plus the kind of letterpress methods employed by his subjects, also uses powder from coal salvaged from the site of the wreck." [Irish Times] This was the first of Murphy's 'big books', selling out at publication almost immediately and extrodinarily hard to find on the market. Winner of the RDS Printmaker Award 2012 & the NUI Art & Design Prize 2012." Tight, bright, and unmarred. Slipcase tight and bright. Grey cloth boards, exposed glueless binding, in blind lettering, paper label. Oblong 4to. 176pp. Illus. (b/w plates). Limited numbered edition, this being __ of 30 (with six additional copies for private distribution).

Description
Detroit, Michigan, 1816. Envelope or Cover. Very good. This two-page stampless folded letter measures 15" x 9.5" unfolded. It was sent by former Colonel, James Thomas, from Detroit on 30 August 1816 to his business associate, Jacob Miller Haldeman, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. It bears a scarce manuscript "Detroit / 30 Augt." postmark and "25" rate mark in red. Haldeman has docketed the correspondence "Letter 30 Augt 1816 / Col Thomas". In this letter, Thomas informs Haldemann that he has been on Mackinac Island coordinating the supply of fort and community at Green Bay in what today is Wisconsin. It reads in part. "I suppose you would be glad to hear from me if it is merely to tell you that I am in the land of the living. . .. I have been about 24 days to the Island of Mackinao. The Troops destined for Green Bay have established themselves at that place and arrangements have been made for supplying them. All matters and things have gone on smoothly this season and something will be made by the contract. Our friend Simpson has made great exertions, he accomplishes everything that he undertakes. . .." . Thomas, who several years before was instrumental in securing land-based supply lines during the Battle of Lake Erie was, no doubt, speaking of a large 60-ton shipment of 370 barrels of flour, 31 barrels of salt, 3 barrels of pork that he had recently received on 12 August via the schooner Hercules. Haldeman was a Pennsylvania iron monger who made a fortune shipping by mule train to Harpers Ferry during the war, where it was used to manufacture arms. (For more information, see Quaife's "The Story of the Schooner Hercules" at the National Museum of the Great Lakes website and James W. Biddle's "Recollections of Green Bay in 1816-17" at the Explore Oneida website.) Quite scarce. At the time of this listing, no Thomas correspondence from either the War of 1812 or his follow-on work supplying army units in the Northwest Territory is for sale in the trade. The Rare Book Hub shows nothing similar has appeared at auction. OCLC identifies no similar items held by institutions, however Haldeman's business records are located at the University of Pennsylvania's Kislak Center. A first-hand testament to James Thomas's role in securing the Northwest Territory. .

Minimal foxing and very slight offsetting from plates to text only. Early ink signature on front blank. An excellent copy with the plates watermarked J. Whatman 1811. The plates are copies in reduced size of those in Bertrande de Moleville's Costume of the Hereditary States of the House of Austria (1804). Cf. Hiler. William Alexander (1767-1816) was an English painter, illustrator and engraver. The hallmarks of his work, usually executed in watercolors, were clearness and harmony of color, simplicity and taste in composition, grace of outline, and delicacy of execution. He accompanied the Macartney Embassy to China in 1792. His other principal works were: Views of Headlands, Islands, etc. taken during the Voyage to China (1798); drawings based on Daniells' sketches, for Vancouver's Voyage to the North Pacific Ocean (1798); and the descriptive plates to Sir John Barrow's Travels in China (1804), and Voyage to Cochin China (1806). In 1804 he published Picturesque Representations of the Dress and Manners of the Austrians, and in 1805 The Costume of China, illustrated by 48 colored engravings. These works were so well-received that in 1814 he re-published these books in small format. Colas 78; Hiler, p. 16; Lipperheide 832.

Description
[New York?]: B'nai B'rith, 1908. No Binding. Near Fine. octavo, 16 pp., issued with out wrappers, a very good, very clean copy. A front-page Editorial concerns 19 year-old Jeremiah Averbuch, who was killed at the home of the Chicago Chief of Police, allegedly during an Anarchist attempt to assassinate the official. The young man's sister protested that he was an honest young man, about to move to Iowa, who had gone to the Chief's house merely to obtain a ""certificate of good character"" which he could use in seeking new employment in the Midwest. B'nai B'rith dated to the 1840s, but it was not until 1913 that the Jewish fraternal organization established an Anti-Defamation League to protest anti-Semitism in various areas of American life. B'nai B'rith did not assert that such prejudice was behind this case, quoting in detail the account by the Chief of Police, but rather feared that such incidents would fuel pending ""restrictive"" immigration laws intended to halt ""the tremendous human stream which annually pours through the gates of Ellis Island"" - a misguided effort to ""keep out of this land criminals and dangerous classes"", but actually barring ""honest and law abiding people who want to come here either to better their lot or are compelled to flee from persecution."" Apparently rare. It's difficult to determine whether such Bulletins were issued regularly, as WorldCat seems to show no listings for any of the issues.
