For the binding: Haebler I, 381-82. ◆Text slightly and uniformly toned because of paper quality (half a dozen quires a bit more browned), isolated small ink stains or foxing, pigskin with minor soiling to edges, just a hint of wear to lower corners, but A FINE COPY, the contents thoroughly fresh, and the unsophisticated binding with beautifully distinct stamps. This is a very rarely seen copy of an outline of the essentials elements for a humanist education, written by a noted German pedagogue, and offered here in a wonderful blind-stamped binding featuring two fierce biblical heroines. Symbols of courage embraced by the Reformation, Jael and Judith appeared on front and back covers of a number of 16th century bindings, and both are shown here in elegant Renaissance garb, clutching the weapons they used against enemies of Israel. Jael offered the Canaanite general Sisera refuge in her tent following a battle and, having lulled him to sleep with warm milk, is shown on the rear cover here in the act of striking a stake through his temple. Beneath the image is the text "Sic pereant omnes inimici tui, Domine" ("So perish all of your enemies, Lord" [Judges 5:31]). Judith pretended to seduce the Assyrian Holofernes, then got him drunk and cut his head off; here on our front cover, she triumphantly displays his head, brandishing his sword. Below her is a verse from Psalms: "Voluntatem timentium es faciet dominus" ("He will do the will of them that fear him" [Psalm 144]). We did not find these plates in EBDB or any of the usual reference works, but they are likely the work of bookbinder Matthias Radmann, who became a master binder in Leipzig in 1546 and who signed his work "M R," often at the end of a caption, as on the Jael plate. A student of Melanchthon, Michael Neander (1525-95) became director of the college of Ilefeld, where he developed an influential curriculum with a heavy emphasis on Latin and Greek classics, rhetoric, philosophy, history, theology, physical science, and geography; the school attracted students from all over Europe. In our volume, he collects excerpts of important authors on these and associated subjects, beginning with the Greek Fathers on theology and continuing through philosophy, mathematics, medicine, chemistry, history, natural sciences, geography, rhetoric, poetry, and grammar. Our 1585 edition seems to be the sole printing and is very rare. Bindings of this sort are almost never found now so clean and with their elaborate blind decoration so extraordinarily sharp..

(8 1/2 x 5 3/4"). 2 p.l., 39, [1] pp. STRIKING DARK GREEN MOROCCO, VERY INTRICATELY GILT AND ONLAID, BY DONNELLEY OF CHICAGO (stamp-signed in gilt on front turn-in), covers with a fanfare-inspired design composed of a lobed centerpiece of onlaid emerald green morocco, diapered and dotted in gilt, containing five smaller cut-out lobed shapes outlined in gilt, the dark green of the boards showing through, left and right lobes of the centerpiece connected to a small emerald green circular onlay diapered and dotted in gilt, top and bottom lobes connected to a similar onlaid circle, followed by a green square onlay decorated with gilt leaves and a small central inlaid red dot, then another onlaid circle connecting to the double-rule border, exuberant sprays of small gilt leaves emanating from the centerpiece and filling the corners, raised bands, spine compartments with large fleuron composed of leaf tools emanating from a central gilt circle, EMERALD GREEN MOROCCO DOUBLURES within a dark green frame with plain and decorative gilt rules, gilt leaves at corner, central panel decorated with gilt leaves and inlaid red dots forming geometric shapes, navy blue watered silk endleaves, all edges gilt. Printed on thick card stock, most illustrations with a thick paper guard (or two) preceding it. ◆A very shallow (hardly noticeable) chip to head of spine, mild scattered foxing and occasional small stains to leaves, one leaf with a crease down the center, light offsetting from illustrations in two instances (the rest protected by guards); with some very minor defects, but an extremely attractive copy, the very elaborately decorated luxury binding in nearly fine condition. This illustrated version of Goldsmith's chief poetic work was bound by one of the leading hand binderies in America, probably during the period when it was headed by the great Alfred de Sauty. Based in Chicago, the RR Donnelley printing company was a pioneer in promoting fine craftsmanship in American book production, particularly from the time Thomas E. Donnelley (1867-1955) became company president in 1899 on the death of his father, founder Richard Robert Donnelley. A talented salesman and visionary leader, Thomas instituted a printing apprenticeship program based on one run by French printer Imprimerie Chaix, and in 1921 he established a hand bindery, recruiting Alfred de Sauty (1870-1949) from the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London to run it. Though hand binding was not a money-making endeavor for the firm, the "Extra Bindery," as it was known, set an example for the rest of the company as well as for the industry in general of the importance of fine craftsmanship done in a traditional manner. According to the "Printing for the Modern Age" exhibit produced by the RR Donnelley Archive at the University of Chicago Library, "De Sauty immediately set the standard for American bookbinding when he hired three European-trained bookbinders, William Anson, Basil Cronk, and Leonard Mounteney. As was the European tradition, hand-binding at RR Donnelley was a team effort. The head of the bindery generally established the design and specified the materials. From there, a book passed through the hands of several staff members, each responsible for a particular aspect of the process; sewing, backing, tooling, and finishing." The tasteful design, fine materials, and quality workmanship of our binding are typical of the work done under de Sauty's supervision. He trained a number of fine binders, including his successor, Harold Tribolet, before his retirement in 1935. First published in 1764, "The Traveller" examines the varying ways in which European cultures seek happiness and the excesses resulting from each approach, all in heroic couplets. Goldsmith's champion Samuel Johnson said that this was the best poem written since Pope, but this compliment may be tainted by self-interest, since, according to Boswell, Johnson wrote at least a small part of the poem, including eight of the concluding 10 lines. Illustrator Myles Birket Foster (1825-99) was an excellent choice for this work, as he was an enthusiastic traveller noted for his landscapes. The scenes here range from imposing cliffs to cozy taverns, and in keeping with the text display charming examples of happiness (a lakeside party with dancing) and touching moments of sorrow (a despairing artist weeping in his garret). The deluxe binding here may also be counted a source of joy and pleasure..

Extracted from a binding, bound in recent pale brown wrappers in the antique style, preserved in blue cloth chemise and slipcase. INSCRIBED "FROM THE AUTHOR," THIS IS THE FIRST CLINICAL DEMONSTRATION OF THE PLACEBO EFFECT, AND THE FIRST DOCUMENTED ACCOUNT OF THE USE OF A PLACEBO IN A SINGLE-BLIND CLINICAL TRIAL. THE UNASSUMING TITLE OF THIS PAMPHLET BELIES ITS PERMANENT MEDICAL AND PSYCHIATRIC IMPORTANCE. IT IS OF FURTHER INTEREST THAT THE SUBJECT OF THE PLACEBO WAS A MASSIVE "QUACK MEDICINE" HOAX OF INTERNATIONAL SIGNIFICANCE. RARE ON THE MARKET: We have been searching for a copy of this first edition for ten years. BACKGROUND OF THE CASE: Dr. Elisha Perkins (1741-1799), of Connecticut, had introduced the use of "Metallic Tractors" for "curing" a wide range of disorders, including pains in the head, face, teeth, breast, bones, sides, stomach, back, rheumatism, gout and much more. Potential consumers were led to believe that even domestic animals could be "healed" by the Tractors' properties. These ridiculous pieces of metal measured about 3" long and were sold in pairs. Their precise composition was kept secret; supposedly they through the agency of "animal magnetism." Perkins' Metallic Tractors were bought by millions of ailing consumers in America, Britain, Scandinavia, Continental Europe and beyond. The most notable customer was George Washington who enthusiastically hailed their efficacy and bought several sets for family and friends. Amongst all contemporary instruments of quack medicine, Perkins' Tractors was one of the most expensive: 5 guineas for a pair. So wide-ranging was the sceme that it is believed that the Perkins name was the first truly successful international "name branding" campaign anywhere, medical or otherwise. Enter John Haygarth, M.D. (1740-1827). Described by one of his biographers as "an Enlightenment man," Haygarth trained in Edinburgh and Leyden before becoming physician to the infirmary in the northern English town of Chester, where he remained for thirty years. Haygarth retired to Bath, and although he was no longer a clinician there he continued to take an active interest in the medicine of the day. Not surprisingly, Haygarth became intrigued by Perkins' Tractors, which had become ubiquitous in Bath and elsewhere. In an attempt to determine the value of the Tractors, Haygarth put to his friend William Falconer, at that time physician to the General Hospital at Bath, the following proposal which appears on p. 2 of the present pamphlet. The significance of Hagarth's text is such that it merits reprinting in full: "The Tractors have obtained such a high reputation at Bath, even amongst persons of rank and understanding, as to require the particular attention of physicians. Let their merit be impartially investigated, in order to support their fame, if it be well-founded, or to correct the public opinion, if merely formed upon delusion [...] Prepare a pair of false, exactly to resemble the true Tractors. Let the secret be kept inviolable, not only from the patient but also from any other person. Let the efficacy of both be impartially tried and the reports of the effects produced by the true and false Tractors be fully given in the words of the patients." And so Haygarth fabricated his own fake Tractors to use as placebos. These he made out of pieces of pencils, bones, and painted tobacco pipes, i.e. materials that could clearly not be influenced by either electricity of any spurious animal magnetism. At Haygarth's suggestion, the tests were carried out by Dr. Falconer at the Bath General Hospital and by Dr. Richard Smith at the Bristol Infirmary. The fake Tractors appeared to be EQUALLY SUCCESSFUL as the "real" Tractors. Haygarth concluded that the "Imagination can cause, as well cure, diseases of the body" and his detailed account of his effective dismissal of Perkins' quackery appears in the present pamphlet. While the word "placebo" had been in use since 1772, the present work documents the first clinically administered and supervised demonstration of the placebo effect. Furthermore, other trials using only "genuine" tractors demonstrated NO EFFECTS in either infants or horses, i.e. subjects who could not reasonably be influenced by suggestion and the imagination! It is a remarkable fact that Elisha Perkins received the first medical patent issued under the Constitution of the United States, in 1796, for THIS device, which consisted only of a pair of metal rods, about 3" long, that were designed to "draw off the noxious electrical fluid that lay at the root of suffering." § Wellcome III, p. 227. This appears to be a complete set of publicity photos issued to promote the Beatles' animated feature Yellow Submarine for its UK release. The British/American production was released in the United Kingdom four months before release in the United States. A rare Beatles collectible. The animated musical film inspired by the music of the Beatles was directed by George Dunning, with art direction by Heinz Edelmann. Though initially publicized as the Beatles voicing themselves, voice actors played the roles (with the Beatles, aside from composing and performing the songs, participating in the closing scene only). Because they disliked the 1965 The Beatles animated TV special, they showed little interest in participating in the film. After they viewed the outlandish work of Heinz Edelmann, they wished they had participated and heartily promoted the film, adding to its success.

Paris: Kuhlmann, n.d. An unusual work on dyeing in with the pages containing the mounted samples opening up accordion style. Of considerable rarity with OCLC listing only an undated copy of this title at the Getty. Kuhlmann was a major French chemical manufacturer in the dyestuff industry, it merged with two other major French dye producers to form Francolor before eventually selling a majority stake to I.G. Farben in 1941. This was a major international story at the time given that Early colour specialties of Kuhlman included artificial ultramarine, and their groundbreaking red dye derived from sulfuric acid, invented by Charles Frederic Kuhlmann himself. Prior to this invention, madder was the most expensive of all natural vegetable dyes on the market, making an artificial substitute incredibly lucrative.

Large illustrated circular advertising "The American Boy", a magazine for boys marketed as a "feast of good, wholesome, interesting and fascinating reading to boys" that any parent would approve of. Includes illustrations of handsome young boys engaging in wholesome activities such as photography, track and field, woodworking, studying, and football. Illustrated circular is printed in black and orange, and is a bifolium measuring 15.75" by 10.75". Together with original branded envelope, addressed and postmarked, measuring 4" by 8.75", and order blank with mail-in envelope (3.5" by 7.75"). Note its derision towards popular fiction, positioning itself as a more wholesome and educational alternative: "The American Boy has done more to get boys away from the reading of trashy, dime-novel, 'Diamond Dick' stuff than any other single influence in America ... [it] will not interfere with your boy's studies". The American Boy was a monthly magazine published by The Sprague Publishing Co. of Detroit, Michigan from November 1899 to August 1941.

Salesman's dummy; 10 1/2 x 8; pp. [178] + "subscription list" (fourteen ruled leaves with blank rows for subscribers' names - thirteen to the back and one to the front of the book; it appears one of them has been moved from the back and pasted to the front, probably by the original salesman); three variant bindings and two spine variants to boards verso; front board - embossed burgundy morocco and gilt title, back board - 3/4 morocco and pebbled cloth, back board verso - gilded, pictorial blue cloth over boards; two endpaper variants - off-white silky paper to front and pictorial paper in pink and white to back; illustrated with four double-page chromolithographed plates and numerous engravings; tipped-in notes and explanations of text and illustrations on yellow stock throughout the book (as published); a few rubbed spots to leather and a 2" cut to tail of spine; corners of the four plates clipped (as published [?]); occasional small spots; in good to very good condition. Salesman's dummies, also called salesman's samples, or blads were used by traveling salesmen as samples of books that could be purchased by subscription and usually contained less pages, than the original book - with excerpts of the more intersting parts of the text and the more spectacular illustrations. Most often, the front board verso featured specimen spines of alternative binding styles mounted. This particular copy was quite unusual, as it not only contained three full variant bindings (as opposed to only spine variants), but also two different styles of endpapers. The writer, James William Buel (1849 - 1920), was also a journalist and editor, authoring more than 50 books - most of them on travel and adventures, as was the current one. He was said to have interviewed the notorious outlaw Cole Younger and some believed he had actually spent time in jail, together with Younger.

Yearbook contents include advertisements at beginning and end, various lists of committees, boards and organizations, literature written by students and faculty, songs and more material relevant to class members. Featured clubs include the Shakespeare Club, Dickens Club, Tennis Club, Floral Society and Hellenic Society. Faculty editorials as well as student essays and satirical pieces noting important or humorous events that took place. In a student essay titled "Manual of Etiquette" addressing faculty, the text reads "Don't be too easily satisfied with your students' work. Always suggest some authority unconsulted, some stone left unturned...Don't recognize the fact that the haystack must be searched all through to find the needle." The yearbook was put together by the graduating class as a souvenir for departing students to remember their time together. Those memories would have been especially poignant for female students relatively new to higher education. Scuffing and staining to both boards. Crack on inside hinge with text block partially detached. Pages clean. Overall good condition.
