Description
Amsterdam: Chez J. Wetstein, 1752. Nouvelle Edition. 142 x 84 mm. (5 5/8 x 3 1/4"). Seven volumes. Reviewed, corrected, and augmented with a History of his Life and Works, a Discourse on the Burlesque Style, and a quantity of Pieces omitted from previous Editions. ELEGANT CHOCOLATE BROWN MOROCCO, GILT, BY LEBRUN (stamp-signed in gilt at foot of spine), covers with double frames of French fillets and lace-like rolls, smooth spines with vertical titling within a similar frame, densely gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, edges gilt over marbling. Printer's device on title pages, volume I with engraved frontispiece portrait, other volumes with frontispieces illustrating the works therein (five by L. F. D. Bourg, one by Paetr), all engraved by Folkema. Magne 403; Tchemerzine V, 742; Cohen-de Ricci 945; Brunet V, 184. Isolated trivial stains or minor smudges (from printing process), but A VERY FINE SET, clean, fresh, and bright internally, IN SPARKLING BINDINGS. This is an exceptionally attractive copy of what Scarron bibliographer Magne calls the best and most beautiful collection of the works of that 17th century master of the burlesque style, offered here in exquisite bindings by an award-winning 19th century Parisian artisan. Paul Scarron (1610-60) was not only known for his prolific output as a novelist, dramatist, and poet, but also for his curious and difficult life. He was severely deformed by what is thought to be polio or an inflammatory spinal condition, endured considerable pain, and, in an effort to find relief, became addicted to opium. Nevertheless, at 42, he married the beautiful young Françoise d'Aubigné, who, after our author's death, became Madame de Maintenon, Louis XIV's mistress and eventually his morganatic wife. In addition to Scarron's novels, our set contains his letters to acquaintances--among them cardinals, nobles, and the queen of Sweden--as well as plays, poetry, and "Virgil Travesti," his masterful parody of "The Aeneid." The story of a group of travelling actors, his most important work, "Roman Comique," is perhaps the very first French novel to show genuine power of depicting manners and character, and it is impressively vivid. The binder Lebrun (fl. 1830-57) was employed for some time at the workshop of Simier before striking out on his own. He won medals in the exhibitions of 1839, 1844, and 1849, and was praised by the jury at the latter for his passionate love for the craft. He was notable for using a variety of leathers in his work, and for his mastery of the art of pastiche. His clients included bibliophiles Armand Bertin, Jules Janin, and Baron Taylor. This set stands on the shelf like so many soldiers in full dress, impeccably attired with gilt, and--as a reflection of the careful appreciation shown to it over the years--with virtually no signs of use..

Description
Birmingham, Alabama: [The College], 1948. Very good. 11” x 8½”. Stapled illustrated thin card wrappers. Pp. [28]. Very good: wrappers lightly scuffed and worn; a touch of light creasing; evenly toned. This is an unrecorded, illustrated catalog for a Black business college founded by an immensely successful African American businessman and his wife (and run by a majority of women), the Booker T. Washington Business College of Birmingham, Alabama (BTWBC). Arthur George Gaston completed the tenth grade, then left school to sell the Black-owned Birmingham Reporter newspaper and work as a hotel bellman. He served in the army during World War I, saving his military pay to invest in real estate when he returned to Birmingham. By 1923 he had founded his first business, the Booker T. Washington Burial Society, and by 1932 an insurance company of the same name. When he and his wife Minnie couldn't find Black accountants, clerks and bookkeepers, they founded BTWBC in 1939 to train their own. Minnie also helped found the Birmingham chapter of the National Council of Negro Women and served on the board of Alpha Kappa Alpha. By the time A.G. Gaston died in 1996, his enterprises also included a bank, motel, two radio stations, two cemeteries, a construction company and multiple real estate holdings. He founded the city's Boys' Club and home for senior citizens, and reportedly bailed Martin Luther King Jr. out of jail in 1963. Black Enterprise magazine named him “Entrepreneur of the Century” in 1992. This book was printed by a noted Black company in Birmingham, Forniss Printers. It has 28 photographic images, showing A.G. Gaston, President, Minnie as Director, and some of the 26 faculty, 15 of whom were women. There are great shots of Black students operating the “$20,000 worth of machinery,” getting “real life experience in the businesses around the college” and enjoying extracurriculars like choir and the basketball team. We even see the “Crowning of the king and queen by president Gaston in a popularity contest between the day and night students.” The book provides the college calendar for the upcoming four years, detailed descriptions of courses in typing, business math and law, “Consumer Problems,” “Applied Psychology,” accounting, sales and more. It explains the grading system, requirements for graduation, rules of “Discipline” and assistance from the “Placement Bureau.” A striking college catalog for an under-known Black training school. No holdings were found in OCLC.

Description
Washington: Government Printing Office, 1871 Book. Fine. Hardcover. First edition. Quarto. 11½ x 9 inches. 40pp. plus 11 plates (one folding, one in color). Lithographic title page with vignette. Publisher's original blind-ruled dark green cloth, gilt-lettered title to front cover. Expertly rebacked to match, corners lightly refurbished. Endpapers renewed. Complete and clean. The complete official report, with precise engineering drawings, of the removal of this major obstacle. Blossom rock was a huge chunk of sandstone, located just five feet below the surface of the Bay between Alcatraz and Yerba Buena Islands and was a considerable peril to shipping. The rock was discovered and named by Captain Beechey in 1826. The plates are beautifully drawn, quite detailed and include a folding map of the entrance to San Francisco Bay showing the position of Blossom Rock, various depths throughout the bay, etc. (from a Coast Survey Chart of 1859). Another map (colored) is "Map showing the Depth of Water on Blossom Rock as established by Survey of April 1871." Also included are numerous detailed engineering drawings, plans and sketches for the destruction of the rock, placement of the black-powder charges, etc. Delicately hand-colored. New York: St. Martin's Griffin, 2023. 1st Printing. Trade Paperback. Near Fine. 5x0x8. Signed by author. Brand new from publisher. Signed without inscription by author on title page. 2023 Trade Paperback. 317 pp. Soon to be a major motion picture starring Robert Pattinson and directed by Academy Award winner Bong Joon-ho. Mickey7 is an Expendable: a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize the ice world Niflheim. Whenever there's a mission that's too dangerous―even suicidal―the crew turns to Mickey. After one iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of his memories intact. On a routine scouting mission, Mickey7 goes missing and is presumed dead. By the time he returns to the colony base, his fate has been sealed. There's a new clone, Mickey8, reporting for Expendable duties. The idea of duplicate Expendables is universally loathed, and if caught, they face being recycled into protein to feed a hungry colony. Meanwhile, life on Niflheim is getting worse, and the native species are growing curious about their new neighbors, which has Commander Marshall very afraid. Ultimately, the survival of both lifeforms will come down to Mickey7.
